Why is it harsh? If you asked for advice on intentionally defrauding an individual would you expect a "nice" answer? This is really no different. If you want to commit a crime then that's fine, but don't expect my support or sympathy if you get caught.
Why?...because you aren't giving the dude ANY slack and your personal attack vibe is massively judgemental, arrogant and holier than thou. THAT's WHY.
If the person just graduated, *I* think he's/she's entitled to explore their options without being drawn and quartered by you. You *could* have made your point in a respectful manner. You didn't.
Just curious...can you honestly say you do not own one single mp3 you haven't paid for? Not one single app you haven't paid for? Never have downloaded a movie? If so, cool. If not, ****.
See?...it doesn't feel so good to have someone unload on *you* with an attacking, judgemental attitude...does it?
If Apple comes after you (which they won't) like one of the over-zealous posters said earlier... just counter-sue for discrimination against non-college-going folk. I'm sure you could make a pretty strong case in court that they are favoring 'rich kids who go to college' while making those 'working class blue-collar people' pay a non-elitist premium! Those ba*tards...
That'll show 'em!![]()
And you are wrong, it is fraud and a form of abuse of the system.
Seriously, the OP deserves an apology from some of you.
I'm buying an iMac soon, and I went to the Apple store for my former college (graduated two weeks ago) and saw that the 24" iMac (which is what I'm looking at getting) is $100 cheaper there than the regular store. Saving that $100 would be great, plus I could use that to make a couple upgrades to the computer.
Hey kiddo I'm in my 30's and I just graduated from grad school. Kill the generalizations about that BS if you don't want us to scream "fraud" when you're talking about the student discount.
And you are wrong, it is fraud and a form of abuse of the system.
When buying a computer with the discount applied... do you sign an agreement (electronically or otherwise) that describes eligibility for the student discount and states that you affirm that you qualify? Does the contract say that you will agree to provide necessary documentation after the sale if requested? Does the contract say that Apple has the right to charge your credit card or send you a bill?

I got an e-mail from Apple UK last week - sort of confirms what robbieduncan has been saying. Presumably I received it because I bought a MacBook last October for my son who is a student. He does not graduate for 2 years so no doubt I will get another next year too.
Your educational discount expires when you graduate it would appear.
hmm my 7-month old white macbook had a dead hard drive a couple months ago....so i walked into a local apple store and got a replacement Penryn MBP....i showed them my ID which i did NOT realize at the time that it had already expired....granted i am still affiliated with the university right now, the apple store guy didn't bring it up, nor did any of the stores or restaurants i had been to in the past few months when I still asked for my student discounts LoL
honestly, i think most stores would just be happy to make a sale!
P.S. the apple store guy also didn't bother me with the fact that I had purchased a white macbook last July either, now that i'm thinking about it! maybe when they refer to not more than one laptop a year, they mean an academic year that runs from September to August??
Oh, ok. It's worth it to at least try though I guess.
If you lie to get a Mac at a price that you wouldn't get it at if you said the truth, you are committing fraud. Which may be a worse crime than going to an Apple Store, grabbing a MacBook and running away.
