That guy is right behind iJustine in my opinion so he’s in 2nd place for my worst tech influencers list.

I'm with you lol. absolutely loathe rene's content. i have no idea how so many people prop him up as the premier apple channel on YouTube.

As others have said above, I have come to accept that early reviews from the usual suspects on the free product gravy trains are a waste of time watching. They rarely highlight flaws or potential problems and it seems to be a race to see who can create the most cringeworthy thumbnail (you know, silly expressions while looking at the product, pointing or shrugging), or the best clickbait title (worst offenders: Do NOT buy a MacBook Air until you have seen this!).

He's popular because he has an intimate knowledge about all Apple products, incredible connections with Apple people, and you'll always get the good and bad when he's reviewing a product. His integrity has never been questioned.

Sometimes it just boils down to on camera personality or perception. Same reason I don’t watch Unboxed Therapy or UrAvgConsumer. I don’t feel like I’m learning anything watching a lot of the influencer channels, maybe others do, then add the fact I don’t enjoy their on screen personalities so I move on.

Apart from the connections he has (which are meaningless to me anyway), I have never gotten any of whatever else you have mentioned from him. He has always been in service of apple before his own subscribers.

In terms of “intimate knowledge” of technology, Apple or otherwise, there are far more superior tech channels on YouTube than Rene Ritchie. Examples include Constant Geekery, MobileTechReview & someone who I was just introduced to yesterday, ArtIsRight.

I bet Max Tech his M2 MacBook Air order will be cancelled by Apple.

He is the only one that actaully tests those machines comprehensively. Really looking to his reviews. Because of his fidnings on how crappy the 256GB MBP M2 model is and the thermals, I am actually rethinking MBA M2. Knowing Apple, we have a 9 out of 10 chance that MBA M2 will suffer with the same crappy storage and thermal throttling might be even more serious since there is no fan.

I'll watch the reviews today for the colors and in-hand physical perspective on the size and shape of the new Air. I prefer the post-launch reviews from people who use the machine beyond "oh I've used this new amazing awesome device for the last few days and even edited this video on it" reviews.

I already pre-ordered so I obviously do not need to be convinced to buy it.

Testing a machine under extreme conditions using apps that don‘t represent real use and then creating a scare video that is anything but objective, is not what I call video worth watching. And what makes things even worse is we have a lot of regular forum users who should know better than to get caught up in clickbait alarm video and are wringing their tech hands all worried, or worse, not making a possible purchase because of clickbait videos like his.

Very well said.

To extend this point further, even if you do require a laptop/computer for heavy loads, there are plenty of dedicated professionals on YouTube who put these machines through specific tests meant for targeted use. There are all kinds of coders, filmmakers, engineers, architects, game designers, etc. who have YouTube channels that perform far more pertinent heavy-load testing on these machines than most generic tech YouTubers whose tests, at the end of the day, are indicative of absolutely nothing that is genuinely pragmatic.

Exactly! This is a casual consumer type machine and people are literally salivating at finding out the SSD speeds, or sweating about not being able to connect two 6k monitors and render out a Pixar movie.

I'd actually argue that the reviewers everyone are moaning about here, are perfect for the audience apple is targeting with the Air.

Well, this is where we disagree. If you think those conditions are extreme, then I am not sure what you think of a user with 5 or 10 Safari tabs open - heavy load? His testing perfectly compares how two systems react to the same workloads/conditions.
Just because you don't think it represents actual use does not mean the testing is invalid. Even if you disagree, you still can't deny that the testing shows one system being superior vs. another, which is the point of his reviews show how different systems would handle different workloads.
I value data over subjective opinions or feelings and his reviews deliver many different data points. I can draw my own conclusion or views based on the data.

How is exporting a video with some Chrome tabs open not real use? I've done that countless of times and still do. Thanks to his videos I now know not to buy a the M2 Pro with 256GB.

Do you have any links to these dedicated professional channels that specifically compare the M1 and M2 Macbook Pro with 256GB?

Depends on what kind of dedicated professional you're looking for! You gotta search for the exact query you're asking here, along with a keyword for the kind of person you'd like to see make this comparison, like "coder" or "videographer".

I'm sure you'll find someone who is at the very least tangentially relevant.

Does the embargo lift at midnight tonight? Anyone staying up late in hopes of early goodness?

Nah. Not shopping for a new Mac myself, so I’d take a good night sleep. However, in the case of me, I was at a concert last night which is way more enjoyable than waiting for a review of a laptop 😂

I’m sure MaxTech is going to make a dozen videos, but I’ll wait for Austin, Unbox, LinusTech or Rene. Basically, anyone that isn’t him… just kidding.

'I’ll wait for Austin, Unbox, LinusTech or Rene. Basically, anyone that isn’t him… just kidding.' - I think you listed my top list of the most obnoxious reviews that I stay away from.

I wouldn’t say I’m looking forward to it since the reviewer’s who have early access are intolerable other than MKBHD. Even then most of MKBHD’s stuff is just a first impression so you’ll have to wait until the weekend or next week to see tear downs and performance reviews.
There's something that doesn't sit right with me about these YouTube reviews and early looks, especially when it comes to the Apple Silicon Macs. I generally like MKBHD's style and delivery--I'm just talking about the whole YouTube business model in general. I think the main thing that sticks in my craw is we're watching a bunch of people who make almost all their money cranking out video review a machine so they can tell us how much faster it is at cranking out video for us to watch of them reviewing the NEXT round of stuff. Everything is always through the lens of 1) how it pertains to video creation and 2) what they need to say to make sure they get an early unit next time.

Again, not trying to crap all over Marques Brownlee or iJustine or any of them--they certainly do run impressive video production shops. It's just........are these the people a normal laptop/tablet/phone buyer needs to hear from when it comes to new Apple gear? I suppose it's not a ton better than the "toy unboxing" trend that was so big on YouTube for a while.

You made the claim, show us. I can't find any video that compares the 256GB M1 Macbook Pro with the 256GB M2 Macbook Pro like Max Tech did. What better videos are there from professionals that could help someone who is looking to either get the base spec M1 Pro or M2 Pro?
