Anyone overly concerned about the Midnight finish being a fingerprint magnet (so much so, they'd cancel their order) as the Verge mentioned?

the midnight color looks great and not sure that would stop me but why oh why do they go with a shade of dark blue

just go all matte black ffs , what is the issue with going all in? I dont understand apple's decisions for color configs as of recent on almost any of their products

but yeah, looks like it accumulates fingerprints just looking at it twice

I looked at that, thought about it for a bit and then canceled mine (in favor of a silver one with the same specs 8/512 - new delivery is between 7/29 and 8/5)

I know a few people mentioned it during the launch at Apple Park - there were Apple people on-hand to remove the fingerprint marks - but its interesting that the three reviews I've seen have made a big thing of it.

Performance seems to be as-expected - it throttles under load and the machine warms up - although not uncomfortably-so.

To me personally it was kind of enough to push me over to Starlight, but I hope this doesn't come as a surprise for anyone now as every attendee of WWDC reported that these things showed off fingerprints like grafitti.

It is perfectly fine to not care about fingerprints and appreciate the look anyway. Many other vendors have offered dark-ish aluminium laptops before and they get visible fingerprints as well.

I enjoy iJustine’s videos because I really like Apple products and her videos are easy to watch. But I don’t watch them to learn technical information.

Max Tech - I like his videos for battery life, CPU benchmarks, and comparison videos.

Rene - I don’t like to bag on people’s livelihoods but I never found his videos easy to watch. A lot of people really like him and that’s cool. I do subscribe and watch now and then but I can’t stand a lot of the “here’s what’s coming” stuff.

Dave2Ds videos are nice and easy to watch and fairly informative.

Maybe it’s just me but a lot of Youtube video creators these days are far less reserved about trying to beat the algorithm and grab attention. They’re less about a true impartial review.

I just had a relative purchase an M2 Air last night - early August delivery date expected. (16GB/1TB)

I’m pretty excited for @vadimyuryev and MaxTech disassembly of the new M2 Air, because I’m really curious about the new cooling system, the new heatpipe.

And even, if it was possible to actually see the M2 chip, that would be great, I wonder if physically it’s like the M1, with the two RAM modules outside the encapsulation.

Fingerprints bother me on my screen, but not being a really oily person or eating cheetos while I use my computer, I should be able to control it on the exterior and I would never cancel for this reason. It does really bother me on my screen however..

Do any of the reviews mention whether the notch can be hidden in full screen apps like on the 14” MBP? I’m at work so can’t watch any of the video reviews ;)

You made the claim, show us. I can't find any video that compares the 256GB M1 Macbook Pro with the 256GB M2 Macbook Pro like Max Tech did. What better videos are there from professionals that could help someone who is looking to either get the base spec M1 Pro or M2 Pro?

Oh ok, you're that sort of petty. No problem, I'll indulge you this once since you refuse to use the YouTube search bar.

A short video discussing M1 vs M2 specifically for iOS developers:

Both laptops compared head-to-head primarily using a wide variety of real-world criteria (coding, video editing, music production, 3D blender, gaming, etc.):

Testing gaming performance on the two, along with an RTX 3080 TI:

Here is a music producer discussing performance differences on Intel, M1 and M2 :

Here's one where the 2nd half of the video only compares the real world performance for video exporting, 3D rendering & battery life:

If you ever want to champion a YouTube channel in the future, I'd recommend choosing literally anyone but Max Tech who have already developed a horrid reputation for being shamelessly sensationalist and clickbait-y all in the name of empty engagement.

not surprising that Final Cut Pro is the weak link in this test. Apple's software devs apparently have problems working from home. Great promotion of DaVinci though.

I’m certainly looking forward to the sea of threads which will undoubtedly pop up tomorrow, blindly piggybacking on any minor complaints brought up by the reviewers.

He is the only one that actaully tests those machines comprehensively. Really looking to his reviews. Because of his fidnings on how crappy the 256GB MBP M2 model is and the thermals, I am actually rethinking MBA M2. Knowing Apple, we have a 9 out of 10 chance that MBA M2 will suffer with the same crappy storage and thermal throttling might be even more serious since there is no fan.

Case in point.

Testing a machine under extreme conditions using apps that don‘t represent real use and then creating a scare video that is anything but objective, is not what I call video worth watching. And what makes things even worse is we have a lot of regular forum users who should know better than to get caught up in clickbait alarm video and are wringing their tech hands all worried, or worse, not making a possible purchase because of clickbait videos like his.

Bingo. You would think that this would be common knowledge at this point. A lot of people seem to watch these "review" aka opinion videos, expecting there to be things wrong or worth complaining about, almost to the point that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Any overwhelmingly positive videos are instantly labeled as nothing more than "paid advertisements", while anything negative is almost always taken at face value & magnified to infinity, no matter how arbitrary & insignificant these issues are.

There was an entire thread of people who were ready to cancel their pre-order because of a short YouTube clip showing a few fingerprints on the outside of Midnight lid. I couldn't imagine a world where I would consider something like this important, but it was a doomsday scenario for many. The same is the case with this SSD "issue" as well. Now the laptop is nothing more than "slow" or "crappy" because of a meaningless test, which hardly represents actual usage for the target demographic, done by a content creator who seems to suffer from an extreme case of Dunning–Kruger.

Petty? You saying Max Tech's videos are bad and telling us there are better videos... I think we all would like to seem them then.

First video (iOS dev). That's the most basic info that you could glean from a Verge review. M1 is good, M2 is only slightly better M1 Pro is significantly better. No actual testing and comparisons involved.

Second video. That guy is literally doing the same tests that Max Tech does. Have you actually seen a Max Tech video?

Third video (gaming). Finally something that is more in depth than what Max Tech has done.

Fourth video. Music production. Again, what basic information. Are you trolling? You're saying that was more detailed than a Max Tech video? Only brings up some random VST is not natively run. What else in there is not common sense if you're the average macrumours reader?

Fifth video. Christ, have you not watched the Max Tech videos. It's the same stuff. Yes Luke does Davinci Resolve tests that Max doesn't do, but Max Tech did a Lightroom test that Luke didn't do. All the other bench mark are literally the same.

I'm quite stumped. What information was in those above 5 videos, apart from the gaming video, that is not apparent in one of Max Tech's videos. All of the "industry professional" videos provided no real life testing and it just seemed like they were inferring from benchmarks and spec sheets.

What a joke. Have you actually seen the Max Tech vids, or do you just have something personal against him?

I think it is really juvenile for several of the reviewers to fixate on fingerprints. The review is supposed to be about performance not acting like a computer is a work of art not to be touched.

I agree. But at the same time, the content creators are going to do to anything to get clicks, which is more often than not, highlight some silly issue & blow it out of proportion. So it's up to the consumer to understand that & take these videos with a grain of salt. This is why I always get a laugh when people hold these content creators in such high regard. The majority are nothing more than regular consumers with a video camera.

Sadly, it basically plays into the main stereotype of Apple users, where many almost consider Apple products as a form of jewelry/status symbols, or something to be flaunted/shown off, instead of basing their purchases on the actual functionality, & obviously the fingerprints won't match their desired aesthetic.

I've noticed that too. Like every big review always mentions fingerprints.

I think it's because they're projecting their issues onto us. They probably get annoyed having to wipe it down all the time for those perfect exterior shots and then forget that the average user doesn't have to do that and doesn't really care that much.
