Okay, so I started this thread and I just got my iPad today and it is fairly warm. It's not hot like the iPhone but is definitely warm.

I suppose I can get some sort of case for it and I wouldn't feel the warmness?

This may make it warmer. I've had my iPad 2 restart (presumably due to overheating) with Skype in a warm room.

I turned down the brightness on the iPad and it seems to have helped. I had the brightness all the way up before.

Oh and it charges faster with the brightness lower.

It definitely runs warmer than the old iPad but it's not such a big deal.

Mine got pretty hot while restoring from a backup. It was as hot as my 13 inch air has ever got. The worst part is it gets hot in the bottom left corner where I hold it. It has been cool since it finished syncing.

my new ipad also gets warm, not hot hot but warm while downloading applications and doc.s

Mine is feeling hot. Moreso on my left side if holding it vertically.

I came from an iPad 1 to the iPad 3 so not sure how to compare it with iPad 2 but I sure don't like this. I'm going to go back to simple surfing the web or facebook and see if it cools down.

yeah the left hand side is where the logic board is. And remember the A5X chip has the heat shield which is drawing the heat away from the chip and into the casing.

The power increase between the iPad and the new iPad is a lot, i was just playing Modern Combat 3 for about half hour and it got quite warm, although it's pretty warm in this room. stopped playing less than 5 mins ago and its already cooled back down to normal.

But it's an iOS device, its not expected for you to play a game for 3 hours straight. earlier when i was watching videos and web browsing it stayed cool to the touch the whole time.

How do you think it'll do with the smart cover folded onto the back? I've yet to get one but plan on it. Think it'll entrap the heat and mess it up?
I'm reserving judgement till I go back to benign use (Facebook, safari, email) for a while. Just hope the cover doesn't create issues AND protects me. I hate hot devices.

Definitely hotter.

Left side gets hot, and stays that way. Not so with my iPad 2. So far heat, heavier weight, and screen tint are the downside of the new iPad. I guess the price we pay for retina display. Unfortunate that Apple had to subtract to add. No one likes technology that goes backwards.

Yeah i was contemplating leaving it naked or covering it in carbon fiber on the back like my iPad 2 but this thing gets pretty friggin hot gaming so i am considering a case, but also thinking that will just trap more heat and if people are having shutdowns/reboots from over heating naked then a case will certainly amplify that problem very quickly.

I cannot imagine trapping it inside an otterbox or something similar as it might just melt completely :).

A smart cover would be fine but i really hate to hold the iPad with the smart cover attached as its just to clumsy for my taste.

I can game for hours on mine some days so there are certainly people who do this.

Not for a movie or light gaming. Really intense games like Infinity Blade 2 will warm it up, but I wouldn't call it "hot to the touch" like a lot of laptops can get. Just a bit warm.

So really, no. This has a lot to do with there being no moving parts.

iPads have hard drives, correct? So how are there no moving parts if a hard drive has, in fact, moving parts?

Yep, mine is definitely running warm. The screen is really nice, but the warmer feel is really bothering me. The iPad 2 felt like I was holding a book. This feels like I am holding, well, a computer. I maybe returning this and sticking with my iPad 2.

I can see alot of people doing this based on my friends comments already of it feeling seriously to hot to enjoy.

I will see what i can do to counter the heat before making that call myself but yeah i see people just worrying to much about the heat and not enjoying the product because of it.

No the iPad uses flash memory for storage so NO moving parts :).

The camera focus servo and speaker are both moving parts. :)

Technically, so aren't the buttons... But I was just focusing on parts that move by themselves.

Yes, I know they're not the source of insane heat, but to say it has no moving parts, isn't entirely accurate. ;)

I've yet to notice this on my 16gb wifi. I'm not doing anything particularly intensive on the thing, but i've been playing games, watching ESPN/other videos, and just surfing the net.

Brightness is at about 45%, Push e-mail for iCloud and GMail is turned off. And obviously no 3g/4g radio. Might be why... I dunno, just my 2 cents.
