I freaked out when I first got my ipad in the first 45 min it was a little hot. But now that I've used it longer, the heat went away. Which normally would be the other way around.

So maybe its first start up fluke??

Same for me. Mine was busy downloading apps for several hours today. Once that stopped it was normal temps.

The new iPad does get warm, but not hot. I owned both previous models and neither ever got warm in my experience. The warmest section seems to be the bottom left-hand side (when holding it in portrait).

I've yet to notice this on my 16gb wifi. I'm not doing anything particularly intensive on the thing, but i've been playing games, watching ESPN/other videos, and just surfing the net.

Brightness is at about 45%, Push e-mail for iCloud and GMail is turned off. And obviously no 3g/4g radio. Might be why... I dunno, just my 2 cents.

I think lowering the brightness is the key. Mine has cooled off completely since I lowered the brightness.

100% that! My device was set to almost maximum brightness. Adjusting it lower had an instant cooling effect. One should never run these devices set to max anyway, it would drain the battery SO much faster. This is my 3rd ipad, and I have always followed this rule.

Mine doesn't get hot. It does get a little warm after 2 hours of video, but nothing to be concerned about.

Ok, I've had it with the new iPad. Yes the new screen is great looking and all that, but I never expected Apple to release a product that sacrifices pretty much everything else for the screen. My MBP gets hot and loud enough thank you, don't need my tablet to be burning my hands.

I've had my new iPad since a little past midnight, and other than the screen, it's noticeably heavier, much hotter-running, much-longer charging, and much hungrier storage-wise. In my 20 year history with Apple, this is my 2nd biggest disappointment, right after the original Newton. I hope iPad 4 fixes the wrongs with smaller, cooler CPU/GPU whenever it comes out, but this "improved" iPad is going back to Walmart tomorrow to add to the refurbished pool.

In Best Buy they have demo models out of both iPad 2 and the new iPad today and the new iPad felt warm on the back lower left side. The iPad 2 didn't feel warm at all.

I also saw a new iPad with 4G LTE at Verizon and it too was warm on the back I noticed. I assume this is due to the larger battery?

Probably the screen making the processor work overtime. :)

My 3rd gen iPad is so hot at the bottom left its uncomfortable after skyping for 20 mins. Is this normal? I never felt any heat at all from the ipad1.
