If you like fingerprints and glare, then by all means, rock your ipad naked. But if you find them distracting, then get a Power Support AG skin. Screen "protector" is really a misnomer. The screen doesn't need protecting, but fingerprints and glare are the real issue.

Since its Gorilla Glass by Corning, I'd say NO it should not need a protector?

It has never been confirmed that Apple actually uses Gorilla Glass, and my understanding is it's actually unlikely that they do, since it would be something they would advertise. Most likely they use something similar that's not made by Corning.

Get one. There are some out there that feel almost the same as glass. If you want to take a chance go for it and don't put one on.

Have 2 iPads. One with and one without. The one with is wifi only and I just peeled off the screen protector and am selling it. Screen looks good as new. No scratches etc.

My second iPad is a 3G I picked up from a family member. Never had a screen protector and the screen has scratches here and there. Only one is noticeable right near the center. Causes a prism effect and is annoying. I just ordered a BSE for it. Hopefully it'll help otherwise gonna learn to live with it cause I need the 3G.

So from my experience get one.

It's Your Choice . . .

but for me, I vote no. I've had an iPad for a year with no screen protector, and as I told my boss last month, "touching the iPad is like stroking an angel's ass".

However, if the sunlight glare (and to a lesser extent fingerprint smudging) bother you, you can trade off the angel ass stroking feel for a matte-like protector.

But to protect against scratches, don't bother.

I say Yes, because my fingernail actually did scratch my iPad 2! The problem is, when this happens, no one at Apple will believe you so you're just stuck with it. I've been all the way up the apple support chain with no one believing me. Now I'm down to writing a complaint letter to apple. Perhaps it was bad QC in the factory on my unit only, but it scratches.

Just because people say it doesn't scratch, doesn't make it so. It is very possible to scratch the iPad through daily use...and especially easy to scratch the oleophobic coating which will show up as a noticeable scratch too.

So sorry you had to experience this. Good luck with Apple. Hopefully, they can help.

I think you should get one just in case, if you choose a good quality screen protector, it should be able to retain the smoothness of the screen. The only problem is that the good screen protector is gonna cost ya, not like the 2-3 dollars one on ebay. You wouldn't want to get accidental scratches on it anyway.

I'm also with antiglare film on ipad and iphone which is reduce the ugly impact from fingerprints in addition to an amount of protection.

I got mine for glare and fingerprints and the feel.

Do you think you could see the screen without the matte screen on it?

I would've said "don't bother" until I managed to scratch the thing while cleaning just today. It's only a very light scratch that can't be seen under normal use so hardly the end of the world, but it's still a bit annoying knowing it's there :D. I'm now contemplating putting one on to at least prevent further scratches.

So I would say the question of whether it needs a protector or not depends on how bothered you are likely to be should it pick up a scratch (which, unless you are prepared to baby it incessantly, is very possible).

Depends on your usage and degree of OCD :)

I went "naked" with my iPhone 4 because I couldn't stand the feel of most of the screen protectors I'd tried and hated how they were harder to clean than the actual screen. It has a pretty fair number of scratches on it now, sadly. (Of course, I tend to just throw it in my purse, too.) I think the iP4 screen actually scratched much more easily than the 3GS' screen.

I haven't gotten a screen protector for the iPad yet, because I don't carry it around or toss it in my purse the way I do my phone ... but my kids DO love to play with it, so I'm probably going to get a screen protector to keep it safe from their grubby little hands.

Haha I'm major OCD.

I'm on my third iPhone. I've never used a screen protector. I had a small scratch on my original iPhone screen (barely noticeable) but didn't have a single one on my 3GS or 4. I'm not planning on getting one for my iPad 2 when it comes next week. Put me in the "not necessary" category.

I don't use a cover/case for my iPhone either, and I have had a few scratches on the back of the devices. I'm not the kind of person to care about a few marks on the non-functional side of the device.

it's not supposed to be a mirror!

I have a Power Support antiglare screen cover, and though I know it's there I love it. The glare of a large touchscreen is a dealbreaker for me, plus it will protect the resale value of the device. I also protect my iphone, and I expect to sell it when I next upgrade.:D

Who needs protection??

I'm telling my girlfriend it doesn't feel as good with one on, so I'm taking it off tonight!

:D

Nope, iPad doesn't need one, I've had the first gen for a year without a screen protector and never had a scratch on it. Just take good care of it and you should be good.

No point in buying screen protector since the iPad screen isn't going to scratch in most circumstances. An iPad case though is definitely worthy since the back scratches easily and affects the resale value.

At first I was thinking that you were wearing some really short shorts, but then I realized those are boxers...properly clothed pics guys!

Please kindly forgive me if I sound rude.

What is wrong with wearing boxers? At least he is wearing something. No?

I want a PS crystal film but 30 freaking bucks is putting me off, especially since I'm saving up to go at the 32GB since I'm taking my 16GB back for light leakage. :)

I find it's a small price to pay for peace of mind, and for the investment I put into this thing.

The one difference between the iPad 2 and my iPad 1 (as well as iPhone 1, 3G and 4)...all of which had a PS Crystal Film...is that THIS time (iPad 2), I had to REALLY make sure I was going to keep it before putting the film on.

In the previous, relatively trouble-free devices, I just put the film on and was on my way. This time...knowing the problems with quality control and backlight bleed...I wanted to make double sure that THIS was the one I was keeping....

I had mine applied at the Power Support store in Burbank...You can't even tell the film is on there.

When I bought my iPhone 1 in mid-2007, the Apple Stores carried Power Support...The sales guy told me it was the best film available...I am so happy he did!
