LOL I love the jet black, props to whoever has it. I just think they didn't get it right. Like I said, next year they will fix it. You can buff out and remove some scratches from black cars but the phone? Nope. So why are we still comparing cars to this phone.

It's a valid comparison because you can induce the exact same scratches on black cars and lighter color cars, but the black ones will show them more easily than white, silver, etc. cars.

This isn't news. We got the same thing with black vs. white iPhone 3G and 4

I do remember the black vs white thing, yes. Let's just all admit Apple could have done this jet black thing better. Anyway, if I had to choose between a matte black or jet black car, I would EASILY choose matte ;)

Apple warns of this on their very site, a finish like that is prone to be scratched regardless of how well it's taken care of. IMO if you're going to be worried about scratching up your JB phone, you shouldn't get it in the first place.

Yep! They could have coated the phone with something to make it more scratch-resistant but nope! Let's create hype and mass hysteria! Let's make a phone look like a new design, when it really isn't, and look seamless, when it really isn't...and let's rush it out there so fast that it can't even be mass produced quickly enough!

I wish people would stop comparing the finish on the JB phone to a finish on a black car. Cars have better paint jobs than this rushed, poorly designed and manufactured idea. It's a beautiful phone but please. Let's just admit Apple got this one wrong.

How is it wrong? I mean it's a freaking phone for F sake. There is no way it could go without scratches. A cars paint job would have a lot more scratches if it had to rest on hard surfaces, and was handled everyday.

Boom! It really is this simple.

Again, you can polish/buff out certain scratches, even use touch up paint on a car. The phone? Nope

Really thought about the jet black but saw it on display and the store manager told me it got scratched before they even got it on the display. Showed me a nice 1.5" scuff mark down the back.
The store manager is incompetent then.

It's a phone dude, a freaking phone. Do we really need to polish out scratches or touch up the paint a on ***** phone? Seriously it's a $1000 device at most. It's not $50,000 car.

Hey, $1000 of everyone's hard earned $$$. I'm not in the business of counting other people's money but regardless of if the $1000 is nothing to someone and a lot to another, it should be of better quality.

I am not saying $1000 is nothing. I work very hard for my money, and I am very careful with my devices. But you expecting a paint job on a phone to be scratch resistant for $1000 is kind of crazy.

I mean maybe $2000 we could talk about it.

I don't think it's crazy at all. $1000 is a lot for a phone. I just think it was a rushed product (jet black) and they will somehow get it right on a future phone.

Whatever I am plenty happy with mine. Forgive me for not expecting a phone to be perfect after a years time of using it. I am not a collector or reseller, I just like to enjoy my phone and look at it from time to time. Sorry that is less expectations then it should be from a smartphone.

I went to the Apple Store last week and wiped the display 7 on my jeans vigorously to clean the smudges off, and when I looked at the back in a certain angle to the light, there were a good amount of micro-scratches, but only visible at that certain angle. They might have been there already. My jeans were about 4 days dirty also. I rubbed my 6S+ the same way on my jeans with no effect.

Last night my coworker decided to hide my phone and when she gave it back to me she dragged it on some dusty monitor stand and I saw some light scuffs on the top antenna band and a small scratch on the bottom.

I posted this answer on Reddit and got shafted in the ass, ignorant folks saying it's impossible the display scratched after rubbing it on my jeans, but honestly you should just go to the Apple Store and try to wipe it on your jeans yourself... In the end, the scratches I've seen on display phones and mine are literally only visible if you look at it in a certain angle, not a big deal if you upgrade yearly.

Your post isn't clear. Did you claim on Reddit that the dusty monitor stand or the jeans scratched your JB?

I've been wiping my JB on my jeans with no ill effects (meaning no obvious scratches like if you did the same with the mirror iPod Classic back). You can't just go to an Apple Store and test this on the display model because the fingerprints might be masking the preexisting scratches. You'd need to test it on a fresh out of the box unit. However, if the scratches on the display models are literally only visible if you look at it in a certain angle, then that indicates the JB doesn't scratch easily like the mirror back on the iPod.

And, of course, if you have any particle stuck on your jeans, shirts, etc. (especially prevalent if you live near a beach), you'll most certainly scratch it up.

This is terrible for a phone that costs almost $1000

My worker dragging it on the dusty monitor happened yesterday so it wasn't in my reply on Reddit.

I wiped the display phone vigorously twice, the second time was after the back was clean. I did notice new marks. When I say wipe it on my jeans I don't mean just gliding it over, I mean really rubbing it in your jeans for a good 10 seconds or more.

I don't expect the Jet Black finish would scratch as bad as an iPod Classic because they're different materials with different finishes, just providing my personal experience as a user who runs my phones naked. Realistically there will always be micro particles on clothing, and i upgrade yearly so it doesn't bother me.
