I don't baby my poly-unibody and I routinely carry it from the corner when the screen is open. No cracks that I can see thus far.

yeah i think these people with cracks either arent telling us something or had an unknown mishap. the first poster also has a crack near the ethernet port, which to my eyes seems impossible to crack unless it has been dropped.

anything plastic can crack if dropped or forced beyond its bending point. thats like buying a glass piece and expecting it not to break when you drop it...

Whoa unhelpful accusations! I'm sorry to question your loyalty to the new poly carbonate design but this looks to be an actual issue and that the kind people who posted photos here are not at fault.

My MacBook had the same cracks at the henge. Actually I only noticed one but the fella at the Applestore saw another forming. My Macbook has never been dropped and I have not been overextending the screen.

Don't take my word for it, take Apple's.

Suffice to say that they replaced the whole display free of charge and were quite nice about it too: I needed it to be a rush job and it only took one day. The fella said it is not an official known issue yet but he has seen a few of them trickle in and provided there is no evidence of any Macbook misuse or dropping, they are fixing them.

hmm well hopefully its not an issue for everyone. i have an incase soft touch case that wraps right around that area of the screen so hopefully that will give it support and not allow force to slowly start cracking it (hopefully)

Finally

Ok, finally! I got my unibody the first week they were out and three months later I saw IDENTICAL hairline cracks. Unfortunately it was so new that not many others had posts anything similar. I contacted apple and they would not acknowledge the problem. I've been waiting for others to have the same problem, and I knew they would since I treat my laptop with care and have never dropped it. They even accused to me of accidental damage. Very disappointed. I will post photos tomorrow, the cracks look identical to the ones posted above

Also, the third crack in the photo above might be the same as mine. It's not on the hinges, but on the power outlet. It's almost as if it's being pushed into the laptop. As a result, the power cord doesn't fit properly anymore and routinely goes on/off....

nice to not be alone and see others with similar issues.

I want to be crystal clear here. This laptop has not been dropped...I have nothing to gain out of saying it has..apple still refuses to replace it and I am learning to deal with it (which is totally unacceptable). This is my 11th mac including desktops and laptops and apple has always been good with things like this. There's a first for everything

Update:
My sister bought it in and said they have never seen that before. They agreed to replace the lid but said they will only do it once. I know of a friend who has the same issue on the lid too. After looking over her MacBook, I see a hairline crack on the superdrive too. I know she doesn't abuse it but it is constantly being moved around.

I bought my macbook early DEC 09 and i have the hairline cracks right by the hinge also. If apple comes out with a free repair for it ill send it in other wise im not going to worry about it. Im just going to get a hardshell case for it and call it a day

First of all, your english is good :) Nothing to worry about there.

Secondly, this cracking issue is becoming a bit of a worry. Unfortunately for you guys it's not currently an issue acknowledged by Apple yet so who knows how your issues are going to be resolved.

Can I just ask how is it at all a "bit of a worry?" Theres what, 10 people in this thread maybe with the problem. If you google Macbook Unibody cracks for our models, it only leads to this thread. I dont see how this is a big issue, if it was the thread would be flooded, instead it gets on post every now and then.....

Google here on macrumors, of course a larger outside MRoogle would yield results, but still that only led to a few more people out of millions of owners...still not an epidemic, show me it's a grand scale failure, then we'll talk....for now...nada:cool:

I'm not interested in convincing you that it might well be a problem. If your Macbook never cracks, good for you, and I hope you have a happy life with it. For others, this is appearing to be a problem, and all in the same places, so it would appear that this has the potential to become a widespread issue. I do hope that these are just isolated cases.

plastic fabrication process...in china...too much variation....plastic fail...:apple: redesigns after 3 years replacing only to who cares about it....still cracks appear...

MacBook cracks
iPhone 3G cracks
iPhone 3GS cracks

allegedly new design -> no more plastic - no more cracks

go with the MacBook Pro, avoid the cheap chinese plastic.
It's only a few hundreds price difference, you will not regret it.

Man that really sucks. Makes me even more glad that I sold my white unibody and picked up the MBP. One thing I did notice is that the lid was harder to open than my aluminum machines. I remember getting it that I was surprised how stiff the lid was, but I just figured it was because it was new.

Those of you with the cracks.. document everything. Print all the pages you can find regarding others with the same cracks and take it to an apple store. I don't see how they could deny you at least a repair on it given the number of others with the same issue. The messed up thing is it will take apple months to start doing anything about this on an official basis, but the only way its going to happen is if everyone speaks up to them.

Maybe if they have another MB cracking fiasco they will get rid of the plastic models altogether for next year. I for one will never buy another plastic MB.

On no........(trying to not freak out my the cracked hinges)

Mine has a nice dent on the right side in the back from the previous owner dropping it on cement. But it still works great.it screwed the hinges up a little and there a little weak now.But besides that it's fine.No HD issues from the drop either.Still working great.Besides the hinges being a little weak, and it falling off my bed and bending the screen sideways from the weak hinges, but I was able to bend them back.:( But ti's fine now.

Man,come on Apple,if they crack from being moved around somethings wrong. It's a "portable"!!!! That's the reason I replaced my G5 with this MB. :(
If it cracks I'm taking it in.And if they mention the dent and that caused it I will print up all the pictures in this thread and take them with me. :)

Thanks guys for letting me know about this. :)

The unibodies don't crack.

But Apple will fix your cracked MacBook free of charge. Call 800-APL-CARE; or visit the Apple Store Genius Bar with a Genius Bar appointment.

Will they fix it if I bought it back in 2007 and did not get AppleCare? My white macbook looks like crap from all the cracking. It seems to stem from where the magnet connects on both the top and bottom.

Yes, they do! I have the same cracks by the hinge. :(. Hopefully Apple will replace the lid. I just freaking bought this thing 5 months ago, and I've NEVER dropped it.

same here

I didn't come here specifically to inquire about this so I don't think its a case where the few people with this problem just happened to meet in this thread. I have the EXACT same hairline cracks as pictured by a previous poster and it can only be the result of ordinary use. It has never been dropped or banged up in any way, hasn't so much as left the house and for that matter has only ever been used on my desk and on my lap in bed. I'm very gentle with the thing and never move it by holding the screen. There's no one else here either, so it ain't like it could have been damaged in some way without my knowledge.
