so does this happens on the 2010 macbooks or not?

Yes this does happen on the new 2010 Macbooks with the unibody shell. The most common cracks appear on the outside casing by the hinges. I also had a rather large crack from my ethernet input all the way to my keyboard. It does not, to my knowledge, inhibit the functionality of the computer but it is an eye sore. I took mine to the apple store yesterday and they are replacing it at no cost. My mac is NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, but they are having numerous complaints about it that they are replacing the casing for anyone with the issue.

Mine Too

Just noticed this morning mine has started to go around the hinge. It pretty much never leaves the house and if it does it's wrapped in a padded case. It most certainly is not treated badly or lugged around by the screen!

It looks like the pressure from simply opening the lid is all concentrated on the point where the cracks have formed. I don't want to criticise but it looks like a design fault. I'm glad others have had this issue, maybe Apple will do something about it.

I'm under AppleCare so it should be remedied but still, we pay a premium for these products...

USB port cracking

Hi guys.

This is what I noticed on my macbook unibody today. I will check with exact purchase date as I am going to Apple Store. Hopefully, I can get my mac fixed.
I dont use much USB ports (I really mean it), neither I use "display" port at all. Macbook never leaves the house. I was trying to be gentle with it, but here came a crack:).

Just saw two cracks by the hinges on my MacBook. Since I'm nowhere near an apple store or an autorized apple dealer how can I get mine repaired? Do I have to call and they send me a box to send it off? How does this work?

Wishful Thinking

I bought my first Macbook just under a year ago. I was really looking forward to having a laptop that wouldn't fall to pieces on me, like PCs had previously. I was studying in England when I noticed a crack creeping up from the top left corner of my monitor. When I got home to Canada, I brought it into Future Shop, where I bought it, and notice another crack on the bottom right corner, and then the staff member pointed out another one on the hinge! They are so hairline that you barely notice them... but I'm sure that they'll get worse, which is why I made an appointment to go about an hour away to my nearest Apple store on Monday.

I should have spent the little bit more on a Macbook Pro! Why spend all that money on Applecare when they'll never "really" fix the white unibody cracking problem.

I just got my lid replaced as well--free of charge. The guy at the genius bar said that this cracking at the hinge is a common issue and that Apple is recognizing the problem, which is why they were quite happy to replace it for free. I actually picked up my newly repaired Macbook the following day, but I'm suuuuper worried this one will crack eventually too. I'm just being really careful when I open it and when I carry it...hoping for the best!

So it is a recognized issue? Will they fix after apple care has expired?

My mb, which I treat well, has cracks at the hinge

Take it to a Genius Bar. I'm as positive as I can be that they'll take care of you guys. They've addressed similar issues for me over the years with the earlier MacBooks that were out of Apple Care.

Same for me on a late 2010 MacBook. It's too bad that they're having this issue, but then again they are completely discontinued.

I am going to take in right before I sell it so it can maybe help a potential buyer feel more comfortable.

Other than that, it is isn't causing me any trouble and is hardly noticeable.

Well I was wiping the computer off today and I noticed the cracks at my hinges... again. This will be the 3rd time I've had this problem with this laptop and I haven't even owned it a year. This is disappointing because I have never had to send a computer back for issues like I have with this one. I spoke to a Senior Advisor who said they might be able to replace the computer but she would have to research the hinge case some more because she didn't know if a replacement could be offered because the computer doesn't have hardware problems. I am getting another box shipped to my house and they are going to fix it again. I love this computer but I'm getting frustrated with it and if they cannot offer a replacement I will sell it and purchase an Air or Pro.

Is your machine out of AC? Have they replaced it for free?

My computer still has about 2 months of AppleCare left. They are going to replace only the casing again at this point. If I haven't heard from the advisor by Friday I'm going to call her and talk about my options.

The unibodies don't crack.

But Apple will fix your cracked MacBook free of charge. Call 800-APL-CARE; or visit the Apple Store Genius Bar with a Genius Bar appointment.

I just bought my wife a used Macbook 13.3" (A1181) and the top bezel is chipped in a couple places. Will the Genius Bar fix it for free?

Yes they do. Mines cracking near the ethernet port and I don't even use it.

My Unibody has cracked 3 times in less than a year. I've sent it back to Apple and the last time it happened I asked for a replacement computer. I was told they cannot do that since it's not a hardware defect, but if it was to happen again they would replace the computer. My biggest concern is that my warranty expires in March and I told the lady I could not afford AppleCare so if the case was the crack again would I be out of luck? She said Apple is replacing these cases in and out of warranty as it seems to be pretty common from what she told me. I'm selling the computer next week and going for a Pro so I won't have to deal with these issues ever again.

Yes, but if you drop any of the aluminum machines they will say accidental damage and won't cover anything.

I understand that. My Unibody has been cracking from just opening and closing the lid. It's never been dropped in the year that I've had it. If I dropped it I wouldn't expect Apple to replace it.

If anyone has taken their 2010 unibody MB in for cracked case repairs, how long did it take?

I started a thread back in December about my lid cracking near the hinges. I'm aware that Apple replace the case free of charge out of warranty, just don't want to be without it for too long.

I mailed it to them, took about 3 days.

Me too, me too!

I have a unibody macbook and it has cracked!
In 3 different places! I'll post pictures later!
I would like to know what can i do now? if will apple fix it or not.

My MacBook has identical cracks. All three of the same ones. I have never dropped the machine and keep it in a "green smart neogreene" case. I also have another crack on the front where the bottom case meets the polycarbonate, adjacent to the left-most front screw (if you're looking at the machine right-side up).

What is apple doing about this issue?
