After I listened some more to my new penryn I could hear this problem, the merom SR MBP I exchanged for this one had the same problem too I'm not sure how many times I'm willing to exchange, cause this one has no problems other than this noise. It's weird the MB and the original core duo MBP do not have this problem. I think I read on macintouch that the problem won't be resolved until there is a complete redesign? I wonder if high impedence headphones really help lessen its effect?

No audio artifacts of any kind on my brand new 17" MBP. I was looking for them, too, as I've been lurking on these forums for a while and had audio issues pegged as a reported problem I might have to deal with.

Mine has a crackle that sounds like a spark or when u get shocked or the cracking of a popcorn in half every now and then on the left hand side towards the base of the monitor

so to answer that question, yes

I don't have anything to use to be able to test the digital output but for some reason I don't think the problem would be there.

I did forget to add that I cannot hear this problem through the speakers, just through headphones, my sennheiser hd-555, iphone earbuds and most noticeably through crappy bose tri-ports.

What they said about the first SR MBP at macintouch is exactly what I've experienced with these MBPs:

"Audio Noise

Noise from the headphone port (first identified by a MacInTouch reader) is a real problem, which has three components, we found in testing with sound-isolating headphones:

First, a very quiet hiss is present whenever the laptop is awake with headphones plugged in. It's on the same scale as the hiss we noted in the aluminum iPod Shuffle, so many people will never notice it.

A greater problem is a quiet but ubiquitous static. It is present only when the audio circuitry is working, and ceases within a second of pausing iTunes or QuickTime player. It is easily masked by music but shows itself during quiet passages.

The last component is an intermittent high-pitched noise. We've heard four distinct pitches, but never more than one at a time; it varies from a high tone to a faint whine. It goes away within five or six seconds of pausing iTunes; we believe this is when the audio circuitry turns off to save power. We cannot consistently cause the high pitched noise to happen, nor affect the pitch. We cannot trigger it with hard drive activity, spin-up or spin-down, display or keyboard brightness, or display activity. We assume it is caused by interference from other components within the machine.

These audio problems probably can't be solved without a hardware redesign, which is disappointing, given Apple's previous audio quality. If audio playback (or recording) is critical to your work, you'll probably need something like an external USB or FireWire audio interface. (We didn't test digital output from the headphone port.)"

I was using my cousin's new MBP yesterday and gave close attention to this detail but, it was no where to be found.

Mine has it. With my iPod ear buds, there is a constant hiss, but it's not there on my Sennheiser HD212Pros. Also, any time a sound stops playing, I get a bleepity-bloop-bzzt-bzzt-bzzt sound using either set of headphones. I don't hear this sound on the speakers, though.

No hiss or static on mine, but it does sometimes do the high-pitched beep thing when you start listening to iTunes.

I have to add that it really isn't noticeable with ipod headphones for me I just hear the regular noise that I think is normal for analog outputs and some beeps.

i've noticed the static once or twice through my (ipod) headphones...and only when the static turns off though i notice it (thought it was my hearing on the blink at first).

That doesn't particularly bother me, but i can definitely see how it could aggravate someone in the audio business.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but one thing that does bother me however is a loud high-pitched sound (like you get on an old, dying tv) through the SPEAKERS when in Windows through bootcamp. This sounds is somewhat constant and pretty hard on the hearing. Hopefully there is some sort of software fix soon.

My new Penryn MBP 2.4 GHz has very noticeable constant white noise coming from its line output all the time. If I turn my speakers up I can get it to also emit a slight humming pitch when I do trackpad gestures.

I have also gotten a series of descending pitches when stopping playback of audio - but oddly only in Logic Pro 8 and when using either the built-in headphone out or my MOTU Ultralite. So I have a feeling that that is a logic problem.

But no other audio issues.

When I unplug the AC power the hiss gets lower in frequency content and becomes 'dirtier' but stays approximately the same volume.

My powerbook G4 1.25 GHz's audio output is MUCH quieter!

I am a musician, and despite the fact that I own 3 external audio interfaces, I often will want to mix on the road or at my girlfriend's house without having to bring an audio interface around all the time.

Needless to say, having just spent $$$ on the thing, I am pretty pissed about this. Otherwise a great machine - runs cool and very good battery life. Nice bright display.

Let's take the "pro" out of the Macbook Pro, and change the name. After going through a couple of these, 4 screens, and 3 hard drives from apple I can honestly say (and yes, I have that squeek-boop-beep problem too) that there is NOTHING professional about these laptops. Nothing

It's a gimmac. It might look nice, but the insides are like every other laptop - made in china, where no one gives a **** how the parts are made. I'm a new apple customer, and have been burned to a crisp with this machine. Unacceptable, I'm really thinking I should have gone with sony or dell.

I partially agree. The quality control with these, particularly with the screens, lids and audio popping, isn't exactly 100%, considering its high price.

What's a gimmac?

"gimmac" = a cross between gimmick and mac, thus was born the word "gimmac" to best describe the Macbook Pro line of computers.

Yeah it's kind of strange my pre-SR macbook has better audio output compared to the 2 SR macbook pros i've had, but I guess i'll live with it because I prefer OS X to windows. Also the quality of everything else on this one I have is great but it would be perfect if it didn't have the noise.

i think i have this problem as well. (new penryn mbp) it seems to be totally random. no matter if i am on ac or not.
it's a constant high pitch hiss. sometimes it stops. i found out that if i turn on or off the volume the noise starts immediately again.

anyone has tried anything that worked on these new notebooks?

You think you guys you have hissing problems, you should see what my new Penryn sounds like when it turns on...snap..crackle..pop...scratching sounds...gotta call apple today, just havent had a chance yet.

Me too, I have these crackles and sounds...sometimes also a...'digital arpeggio'... :(

This happens with my MBP. I have a: MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz 2GB Glossy (but otherwise standard).

Someone mentioned that it sounds like power management hissing. I tried changing the power management modes but nothing got rid of the hissing/beeping entirely. When the notebook is unplugged the hissing just gets quieter (as the screen dims). However, disabling the backlight entirely does not make the noise go away.

I'm not quite brave enough to try a third party processor hack, but I don't know if there's another choice. "pmset" does not seem to have any options for disabling C4. It sounds like exchanging the notebook wouldn't do anything, except maybe get Apple's attention (if *everyone* did it).

Anyone find anything that helps that comes with the OS?

FWIW: I've noticed that if I use regular headphones, I can't hear the noise as much as when I use earbuds. I mean, the noise is there, but it's tolerable. If I were stuck with just the earbuds, I would rather have no audio at all.

I have a new Penryn MBP and when I have it plugged into my Logitech Z-5500 speakers via a optical to optical mini toslink cable I will hear a loud static/electric Pop noise that comes form all speakers.
It only happens when all audio or noise as stop playing through the speakers.
So lets say im listening to music and the track eventually stops and no other sounds plays through the speakers, within a minute or two the speakers will do the loud Pop sound just once.
Also when i plug in some headphones into my laptop I get a minor hissing sound, the hissing sound is even louder if i have my z5550 plugged in and i plug my headphones into the volume/receiver for.

Does this happen to anyone else? i dunno if this is a problem or not, its not terribly annoying but its noticeable.
