I would hope that the graphics in the 13" model will get bumped up this year. The standard iris graphics aren't much of an upgrade from the HD5000 in the macbook air but they are driving a Retina display.

Looking at any benchmarks shows that the Iris graphics are significantly improved over the HD5000. And the Iris Pro even further.

The unibody design lasted for at least 4 years. The retina design has been out for less than 2. There's absolutely no basis to assume that they'll be redesigned.

there's plenty of basis, trends.

they've released spec bumps upon spec bumps so its overdue for a refresh.

No, it's not. Just because you want to pretend you're informed, I guarantee you have zero sources to back up that statement.

The rMBP hasn't even had its current design for a year. It received a slim down with the late 2013 model, which is current. We might see spec bumps, but Apple isn't in the habit of doing a total redesign of Mac Hardware on a yearly, or even bi-yearly basis. To back that fact up, take a look at any product line of Mac Hardware - you'll see designs lasting several years before being changed.

"slim down" doesn't count as a redesign. Calm down buddy. The original retina form factor came in june 2012 which means for almost 2 years we've had the same design. Which leads me to believe they'll release a redesign in the fall.

I don't need direct cited sources to back up my personal opinion, thanks.

Well to my knowledge, there's not a precedent for Apple redesigning the MBP after 2 years, so there's really nothing to go off of. Looking at the evidence that's present, it's objectively not like Apple to redesign that machine in this short of period of time.

I think that your "opinion" is more of a "hope." Opinions should be supported by sound reasoning. Your reasoning, however, is that they'll redesign it because "for almost 2 years, we've had the same design," even though Apple's track records show that they simply don't redesign laptops that often.

This isn't to imply that this absolutely won't happen, just that there's no evidence at all to support it. Opinions without evidence or logical reasoning are called "hope" or "faith."

I would expect a spec update and that's it.

There are 3 things they could announce. One likely and two that are technically possible now, but its anyones guess when Apple decides to implement them.

1) Maxwell GPU. No reason they couldn't have a Maxwell GPU by June.

2) Price drop for SSD
3) IGZO screens

Secret option 4
4) 17" IGZO. (This one is more of a prayer than anything ;) ).

Do you have any sources to back these claims up, or are you just copy/pasting them all over as a way to attempt to make them valid?

I think your being a little harsh. I didn't post them as facts or certainties.

My reasoning :

1) Maxwell GPU
Without going into the could Apple drop the dGPU debate, maxwell will likely be the next dGPU for the rMBP. As for when, this is unclear as if there are delays in production it could slip. If its based off the 28nm process its possible this could be ready for the next refresh. They are already selling 28nm maxwell chips.

2) Price drop SSDs
The Apple SSD upgrade price is very high. It costs more to upgrade to 1tb apple SSD than to buy a samsung Evo 1tb SSD. (I know the interface is PCI-e but even so the upgrade price is miles away from reasonable let alone competitive). Its a fairly safe bet that at some point a 1tb upgrade will cost less than it does now. This is something that could happen at any refresh. It will probably happen in little increments every now and then. Hence my including it.

3) IGZO Screens
IGZO is the next step for screens. Apple went from TN to IPS panels and they will go IGZO. Its technically possible now, other manufacturers have then in laptops. So at any refresh Apple could say now is the time.

4) I did say this one was a prayer ;)

Wwdc 2014

where is spec bump or another announcement ? I still waiting news..

Now is a great time to buy a rMBP.

The only one of these that is even plausible is a possible $100 price drop. There is about 0.001% chance that Apple would add Maxwell before Broadwell -- if ever. Chances of Maxwell in a Broadwell MBP are probably lower than the chances that Apple will completely drop the discrete GPU from the Broadwell MBP.

I didn't say they would be in the next refresh just that they could. i.e no technical barrier.

However I'd say there is a good chance at some point in the future 1,2 and 3 will have happened.

IGZO is also very possible. Most of the other manufacturers have already moved to it.

It also depends on the type of update. They may not do a small bump update. There will be no new broadwell cpus for the macbooks this year. So this will be the firsttime where a small bump in cpu will be given a major upgrade.

I have a mid-2012 (first gen) 15" rMPB (Nvidia 650M), and I've been looking at the current gen 13" rMPB as I usually use my laptop around the house and appreciate working outside the confines of a desk. Thing is lately I've noticed the computer is warming up and it's HEAVY at 4.5 Lbs.

I think I'll regret moving down to 13" and away from dedicated GPU for gaming (not graphic intense games such as The Walking Dead for example). Also, the battery life is waning given that it's a two year old laptop and I'm eying that 9 hour battery life on the 13". The conservative part of me says a $2200 laptop should last you 3-4 years. What would you do? If you purchased the $2600 15 rMPB (w/ dedicated GPU) now how long do you reasonable expect it to last you?

I'm in the same boat and I'm waiting. I'm hoping for a change to the display panel used, perhaps a bump to 4K so we can get an effective 1920x1200 desktop space instead of 1440x900.

They may also bump the SSD from 1TB to 1.25TB if past revisions are any indication (2012 = 750GB, 2013 = 1TB). 1TB is more than enough for me but as the sizes increase the previous top end SSD decreases in price.

To be clear this isn't me saying "oh I need a 4K panel in my laptop!" this is me saying having 1440x900 with the best Retina setting (native 4x pixel scaling) isn't good enough.
1920x1200 is my absolute favorite resolution for high productivity multitasking.

You might have just defined my tipping point that would result in a MBP purchase.

I'm expecting them to bump the graphics as-well to an 860m which appears to have replaced the 750m and 650m in power draw so if Apple intends to keep the power consumption the same the faster 860m will make an appearance in the next refresh.

Hope those 2 things happen too. I need 1tb of available space. Wouldn't a 4k screen need the 860m?

Just to add, I know that the current rMBP has a scaling option to offer a 1920x1200 desktop but it's not pixel perfect and I've owned five (!) of the rMBP 15" notebooks and when you use that scaling applications are blurry. The scaling isn't perfect which is why it must be pixel doubled to look good.
Thank you for sharing your insight here.

isn't it probable that there will be a mid-2014 Haswell rMBP refresh this month? Afaik Apple tends to refresh Macs in June. How far in advance does Apple usually announce these refreshs?

The June window is strongly correlated with WWDC. Since nothing was announced, there will be no June update. The next window is probably October.*

* No MBPs were ever released in July/August/September. An MBA upgrade happened in July of 2011 though.

That's as useful as saying that Apple could switch from copper wire to gold wire in their power cables. There is no technical barrier and gold would be better because it is both a better conductor than copper and more ductile, so less likely to fail. In both cases, it is technically possible but antithetical to profitability.

It would be the first time that Apple would launch a major Mac upgrade based on a small CPU bump, but it won't happen. Apple saves a huge pile of money by developing major upgrades at the same time as new motherboards which accompany new CPU generations. There is no reason why Apple would leave that huge pile of money on the table.

Minor speed bumps are not announced in advance. They just show up in the Apple Store.

It simply depends on when Intel will make available to Apple the suitable CPUs. Except with regard to the end of year peak holiday shopping season, I don't believe there are months which Apple prefer for a release.

I notice you didn't touch my second statement because I think you know I'm right.

Incorrect. I argued against your first claim in post #37 above. Your second claim merely states that storage prices will eventually fall, which is not much more insightful that predicting that the sun will continue to rise in the east and set in the west. Your third claim that Apple will eventually adopt IGZO displays is also not very profound.

Edit:

I did have a pithy comeback here but I think we should call it a day.

I will cross my fingers for Maxwell and leave it at that.

IMO unless it is literally a week before a gauranteed release day of a new model, just go ahead and buy now. Trying to stay ahead of the obsolescence curve is impossible anyways. Enjoy your purchase right away and buy now. I basically did and I'm loving my new rMBP. :)

?Has anyone made their decision?

Hello everyone,

I am in the same boat and was going to wait until June (now passed) for any overhauls to buy a 15 inch rMBP.

I would like to buy before my next semester of college starts so I can work (I work online) and do my college work on it.

Looking ahead, at all of these post in addition to others, I have found the following things (rumored)

1. No release this summer, possibly September or later in October
2. Broadwell not until 2015, so possibly a better screen, hard drive price / capacity and battery life

I really do not want to wait 4-5 more months for minimal improvements. I will give my 2010 13inch MBP to my sibling which has lasted me a nice time.

Wondering if anyone has any updates or have pulled the trigger.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Any updates that happen this year are going to be MINOR. If you need a laptop, now is a good time to buy. Check out the refurb section of the Apple store and see if they have the configuration you want. Use the money you save to buy AppleCare or beer.
