I am convinced that the warming issue is on a case by case basis. I've owned about 4 iPad3s (on and off over the past two weeks) and I've noticed only one of them getting particularly warm. I don't play video games, so maybe that's why it hasn't affected me, but on one of the iPads, I was scrolling through photos in the photos app and the unit became very noticeably warm. That was the one and only time I noticed it.

No it's a minor problem, you can always turn the iPad upside down and not feel it.

Why do the Apple apologists say it doesn't get warm? That is the bigger question. Every review from major publications mentions the increase in heat.

So tired of this. Mine doesn't even get remotely warm, and I've used it for a 10+ hour stretch between reading, taking notes, gaming, and web surfing.

Yet another coworker IM's me today with "We looked at the iPad 3 in the store and IT WAS SO HOT and the battery didn't go past 65%!"

I calmly replied with, "You should buy an iPad 2."

my 3rd placement (all due to screen issues) while having an impeccable screen really took me by surprise with it's (probably) heat related problem. after unpacking, i completely drained the battery by watching random youtube videos and checking on the infamous lower left back side for any heat - everything was normal. the only installed app was speed test. 10 minutes of use after the charge i noticed the progress bar of an app i was trying to install just wasn't moving. tried the speed test to test the connection and the thing was really struggling to download/upload any data averaging on 0 while getting progressively hot with every next test. i turned the wi-fi off, reset, connected again - same results. only the complete erase and reset solved this but i'm not giving this unit another chance.

Drain your battery all the way down, then charge back up. Cut my heat problem significantly. Still warm, but not nearly as hot as it was.

My wife loves the heat

My wife is the type who will put on a sweater and blanket in 72 degree rooms. The new iPad has been a godsend for her. She rarely bothers with a blanket when using it, and she says she's done wearing mittens too.

As a lark, I rested some hot food on a plate on top of the aluminum back while I talked on the phone. I came back ten minutes later, and it was hot as ever!

Not a jot. After 3 hours on infinity blade 2 it's certainly warm but by no means describable as hot or uncomfortable to hold.

I use my iPad for work and leave it on for 7 hrs straight. Never in sleep mode and I feel no warmth from it whatsoever. The only time it gets warm is if I hold it with both hands and that the heat from my hands being transferred to the device. I let it sit on the stand there and felt it and it was cool to the touch after a 7 hr work day.

I don't understand what the hype over heat issues is all about

My first few days, it did bother me. I don't know if its because I got used to it, or the fact that its gone through a few full charges, but now it *seems* to be running a bit cooler but yes I can still detect some warmth but its no longer an issue.

I just got my new ipad 3 hours ago, i have been playing games since then, and it doesn't get that hot...
Im used to my laptop, and that one is a lot hotter!

really i find it no warmer than holding a cup of coffee in my hands
and that's only after some real heavy usage, so it's a non-issue in my case

That sounds way too hot for me to be comfortable over some period of time! (And in contrast to a cup of coffee which gets cooler as time goes by, the new iPad with the huge battery is getting hotter than July...)

At last an honest coffee drinker with a new iPad who admits that the new iPad gets hot in one of the corners. (I wonder what kind of internal part that is located there?)

It is, my first iPad was very warm, I exchanged it for this one, and its cool like my iPad 2

This warming issues seems way, way overblown. I've been using my new iPad "naked" for a couple days now (previously was in a case) and have yet to feel anything resembling uncomfortable heat to the point I had to put the iPad down -- and I don't have big hands.

I think anyone who has experienced heat so hot they couldn't handle touching the iPad has a defective one and should return/exchange. That is not a normal situation.
