Don't tell Trump, but both Twitter and Google have voiced support for Apple. Maybe he should boycott all technology and give us a break.

So what? It's hilarious that Google, Facebook, etc are coming out and supporting Apple as if they give a flying you-know-what about respecting people's privacy. Please. They are literally some of the worst offenders when it comes to tracking you and selling your information.

I can already see the retort coming: "Well, you agree to it when you use their services." Oh, I see. Well, Apple resides in the US and uses its services, its tax laws to their advantage, along with all the other protections and benefits.

I'm surprised the usual Trump supporters aren't in this post. Mighty quiet.

I'm learning a lot from Donald Trump during this campaign. What I've learned most of all is that the general populous is now so used to the American Idol/X Factor/America's Next Top Model way of doing things, that infamy itself is more important than depth. E.g. The winner of any public contest won't be the candidate that says the best things, it'll be the one who's heard the most.

And in Trump's case I'm convinced he purposely says controversial things just for the publicity.

Unfortunately, that is pretty much how things are these days. Also, one of my favor quote, "A person is smart. People are dumb" -MIB

"We have to use common sense". There is no such thing as common sense, there is knowledge acquired over time or gleaned from study or research or gained through experience. But nothing we know now is knowledge that is common to us all or somehow, 'just known'. What is obvious to you or me may not be to someone else.

"We must use our heads". Yes, we must think, do we want privacy, is that something which we value? Do we want companies compelled through a 200 year old act to become de facto arms of law enforcement and/or government? Do we want to risk ruining encryption for everyone for the sake of a few? And do we want to hold fast to those ideals that set our free countries apart from those without freedom, or do we give it all up because of the threats of a few cowards?

I am personally utterly disgusted by the tiresome rhetoric spouted by this man and countless others, that in order to be free and secure we must give up our freedom and security and just trust that a bunch people who have time and again proved themselves untrustworthy will, do the right thing. No thank you!

I don't support Trump but I also am not stupid enough to call his supporters insane. People support him because he isn't a typical Washington politician (which everyone is tired of) and there are millions of people who don't support Sanders super left wing stance. If you feel that way basically your only choice is to support Trump despite his downsides. Every other candadite will be more of the same BS.

Yes, that makes perfect sense. Vote and support a hypocritical, misogynistic, racist ******* just because he's "different." Yeah that's just brilliant, BRILLIANT logic.

FWIW, I am a conservative and generally vote Republican, but I am dead set against this and Trump couldn't possibly be any more misguided and wrong here. Apple shouldn't ever budge one bit on encryption and privacy.

I thought the GOP candidates all talked about their love for the Constitution and have even written books about it, or does that only apply to the 2nd amendment?
Too bad there are no Libertarians this year in the GOP to provide some sanity, except Rand but he dropped out already and isn't a libertarian anyway.

Donald Trump, a leading Republican candidate in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections, has called for a boycott of Apple until it complies with a court order to unlock an iPhone 5c used by shooter Syed Farook in the 2015 San Bernardino attacks, according to Reuters.Trump's statement is ironic given that his latest tweets on his personal Twitter account were shared from an iPhone. Trump's comments come just two days after he criticized Apple for opposing a court order to unlock an iPhone as part of an ongoing FBI investigation into the attacks, saying "who do they think they are?"Apple published an open letter on Wednesday stating that the company will oppose an order from a U.S. federal judge that demands the company create a new version of iOS that circumvents several important security features, allowing access to Farook's smartphone data to assist the FBI's investigation.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said that while the company is "shocked and outraged" by the San Bernardino attacks last December, and presumes "the FBI's intentions are good," the company strongly believes that building a "backdoor" for U.S. government or law enforcement would be "too dangerous to create."

The U.S. Department of Justice has since called Apple's privacy stance a "marketing strategy," according to The New York Times. In a court document, federal attorneys deny claims that Apple would be creating a "backdoor" for the FBI, and the department demands that the court force Apple to assist the FBI in unlocking Farook's iPhone.

Update: Trump has shared a follow-up tweet claiming he uses "both iPhone and Samsung," but he insists that he'll "only be using Samsung" until Apple complies with a court order in the FBI's investigation. His latest tweets have come from Android and the web.

Mr. Cook has gone too far this time

Gone too far in what way? Anyone at all knowledgable about the issues involved understands that he is protecting every single user's right to keep their information private and secure on nearly every piece of modern technology. This is far more far reaching than the information on a single iPhone. That's not what this is about.

This issue -- Apple's stand for privacy vs. the government's demands for back doors -- is all over the news at the moment, not just at MacRumors. Will this call for a boycott be forgotten as soon as there's another attention getting news story that the political candidates jump on? I wonder how big an effect this call for a boycott will have after a few more news cycles.

Government has been after Apple to create a back door for last 18 months. Government found their perfect case, to push their point. If it really was one phone one time, possibly, as this phone does not have the chip enclave and is using IOS 7.

What government's real goal is to set a president, and subsequently force Apple to hack iOS 8 & 9 on phones with chip enclave. These are truelly not hack able and it's driving the government nuts. If you follow the details, Apple has already per court order provide the iCloud backup the terrorist did about a month before. FBI is missing the last several weeks.

Consider however, the care the terrorist used in destroying two other phones by crushing them, and disposing of their computer hard drive. Any reasonable person can only conclude that any valuable information was on these destroyed devices. The remaining phone might contain location info of the unaccounted for 18 minutes after the attack. But in most probability not much else of use. By playing the terrorist boogyman card, FBI is trying to win converts to forsake privacy for perceived safety. I say perceived because we the people, are never privy to what actual information is found or what terrorist plots were foiled. We are asked to trust people that have lied in past. "We are not tracking US citizen, calls, emails, texts. Only metadata". Of course Snowden documents have shown how we have been lied to. To keep us safe.

The NSA already has hacked older Apple iPhones as revealed by Snowden documents. This were for phones Apple could get into as the password sequence was transmitted to Apple. This older hack will not work, with the new phones that Apple designed to specifically prevent future hacking. No password info is ever transmitted or even available to the main chip. That information is held on the enclave and never leaves that individual phone. No app, no backup, gets inside the enclave. The enclave authorizes access to phone with codes that change each time. Your password never leaves the enclave.

Since the FBI is looking for a way to brute force the four digit password once the auto erase and time delay functions are defeated by Apple there is something new iPhone users should consider. All we need to do is increase our passcode to at least 10 digits including some letter characters. This way if Apple has to cave regarding helping with brute force attacks, it will take multiple years to break into the phone with complex long pass codes. The hacker will need the phone, and running the brute force for 10 years will frustrate the hell out of em. This will keep our info safe from hackers, FBI, foreign governments, people that steal the phone, even if Apple is forced to write this non erase, non time delay hack and it gets out into world, or Apple is court ordered to hack your phone.

As opposed to voting for a hypocritical, feminist, narcissistic, power monger just because she's a woman. It's no different. They are the same. Obviously I'm not going to support either of them because they are the same horrible person as far as I am concerned. The closest I can come to supporting ANY presidential candadite currently is Bernie Sanders because I think he's honest and wants to do what is best for Americans. The problem is I would be naive to believe it isn't going to cost me much more in taxes to make his future happen which I'm not particularly in favor of.

Your self-retort is confusing. Are you suggesting Apple is boycotting the US in some way?

I'm just saying that if Trump has decided on an Apple boycott due to this singular issue, surely he should be wary of other companies that have publicly stated they stand with Apple on this issue. Instead he embraces them.

The Donald presented an idea to himself, talked it through to himself, and after very little thought at all, stamped it as a great idea to himself, and made it so.

All within 60 seconds.
Was he even talking to the audience, or just externalizing his inner monologue?

Edit: I mean really think about it. Do you think Trump is really that big of an idiot? He magically became a billionaire? Regardless of whether he became that because he's the nicest guy in the world or the biggest back stabber, either one requires intelligence. Why do you think he's running? It could be he thinks he honestly could do a better job or he could be sabotaging the whole Republican candidacy to make sure a Democrat gets in office. Yes those are extremes and it could be anywhere in the middle, but neither Sanders or Trump are idiots. Otherwise they wouldn't be were they are. Politics is all about calculated risk and jumping at the right opportunities. Public perception is what they want you to buy into.

He became a billionaire starting with money and contacts from his father. Four business bankruptcies. Many business failures (bogus university, casinos, hotels, random products lines, etc). If he had simply invested his seed money into a basic stock fund he would have the same amount of money. He's running for his ego. Period. Notice how he refer's to Bush's "reign"? Trump wants to be king. It's the only thing he thinks he hasn't accomplished yet.

All of his speeches are simply a stream of consciousness. He's a Wall Street rapper.

On topic, MSNBC showed his merchandise table at the event where he called for a boycott and they are using iPads as cash registers LOL

Amusing. I'm sure he would throw away a $600 device and spend $600 more instantly.

Now as for the hat and t-shirt biz, maybe he could have those made in the USA instead, but the phone price issue is a different story.

This thread is proof there really is one born every minute. I see many people commenting who don't understand the gravity of what is being asked for by the federal government.
