I'm really glad I ordered my cables and dongles thru Apple & not third parties. I ordered several items (for 2 15" mbp on order) and have emails with credit for all.

I appreciate that they came to their senses and had the guts to stand by their consumers. Not all companies do this.

These dongles are not practical when the laptop is on the lap. I guess Apple wants us to use them as desktops.

I would be genuinely interested to hear an Apple engineer's view on this mess.

They would be the sort of professionals who need proper equipment and all sorts of specialist equipment plugged in... I can just imagine the look of horror on their faces as Ive floats down from his tower, with this portless-wonder scribbled on a napkin.

Having anything plugged in isn't practical when it's on your lap besides maybe the power chord.
Certain ExpressCards are fine, as well as memory cards. Maybe a memory stick too (not a cellular stick, there's ExpressCard for that).

Not the power cord.

This is the best HDMI 2.0 adapter I found. It uses DisplayPort Alternate Mode and it's cheaper than everything else that I've seen. http://plugable.com/products/usbc-hdmi/

Strangely, the Amazon listing for this clearly states it is not compatible with the 2016 MBP. I wonder why. Are there any USB-C to HDMI (only) dongles that are compatible?

I'm in the same boat, need one USB-C port for connecting to a 4k screen and the other USB-C port needs to handle Ethernet and charging. I'm looking into the Anker "Premium USB-C Hub with Ethernet and Power Delivery" https://www.anker.com/products/A8302041 but it's unclear if it's compatible with the Apple 61W charger.

I got the same requirements and I took another Approach.
Although my 15 Inch will have four ports, I only want to use the two on the left on regular Basis to Keep it as clean as possible and use a mouse in the right side.

As it seems that the current Adapters can't handle 87W power passthrough, I'll go with the following.

Left side port 1: Power plug
Left side port 2: Ethernet and HDMI using the Satechi Adapter http://www.satechi.net/index.php/co...-micro-card-reader-3-usb-3-0-ports-silver-577

There are very few Adapters that Combine Ethernet and HDMI but this one seems solid. Mine is on the way.

You've seen this hidden but relevant info regarding HDMI on their website? "The Type-C Multi-Port Adapter supports 4K at 30Hz." – I wouldn't consider this a viable option.

It's not really hidden. I'm well aware but right now I don't have a 4K Display and all he other adapters have other issues. I need Ethernet and HDMI (HD) in the office.

There is no perfect solution right now

Quick question, would it be better to connect the new MBP to a monitor via Displayport with a USB-C to DP adapter or a USB-C to DP cable?

Is one better than the other?

Apple’s Dongle Gate?

It’s not that often you see the tech world’s hefty reaction and that many headlines of “angry” or disappointed people and potential customers, to a new product like Apple have “given” us all at the launch of their new MacBook Pro.

Although very few people have actually had their hands on, let alone worked with, the flagship model the 15 inch with Touch Bar or the 13 inch Touch Bar for that matter, people still have an opinion and judging the “Book by it’s cover”. Still, YouTube is full of people having their opinion of something they’ve never actually seen or touched. The outrage of missing ports and Apple warping their MacBook (Pro) customers into the next level of technical evolution, is maybe somewhat misplaced, although I too had to order Apple dongles for my “1 year ancient USB equipment”. Yes, I’m holding out for a refund too by Apple as I paid the full price now seeing most of their USB-C dongles have gone down in price significantly.

The outrage of “missing ports” misplaced? Maybe. Go back when Apple, as the first computer company, ditched the floppy disc (floppy?, go Google the word), and the total cry out when the Super Drive (DVD/CD) was dropped and Apple only offered a stand-alone USB (irony) drive for people who had tons of CD’s and DVD’s for their computers. We survived ! - at least most of us I reckon, as I haven’t taken any academic survey to prove my point here. We may have lost a few just because of that.

So the ‘ol USB port. Yep, for now its a dongle, that's the price we pay for being early adapters and Apple being a pioneer, but in 1 or 2 years you’ll be celebrating your 2 or 4 USB-C shaped Thunderbolt 3 ports and do funny and embarrassing dances... when you are alone!

The HDMI slot. Your TV and alike will be USB-C shaped in future and while waiting, buy a dongle. Like me.

The card reader. Here the camera companies have to take their responsibility when developing and launching a new camera. Relying on “old” tech like a memory card, although the speed is imperative for most cameras, they haven’t innovated at all on that subject where most cameras, if available at all and at best, are providing a USB 2 connection to transfer from card in-camera to an external device. That's not right. Nope, leave that “little crucial” bit to the memory card manufactures to solve and let them, and others, make some kind of device (card reader) so your customer can actually get their photo’s or movies offloaded at a reasonable speed. Camera makers, stand up and innovate on this point (not dongle-it).

Blaming Apple for all this, is not quite fair. Look at the PC industry adopting same ports already, although in my opinion Apple made a mistake (I think they know by now - the world wasn’t quite ready) and Apple should have offered free dongles in their luxury box of very expensive MacBook Pro machines. If you want to lead the pack of taking on the newest technology, you have to stand up and take responsibility and - of course - the credit for it when we are 2 or 3 years down the road. But for now, know your customer!

Can’t wait till Apple in 5 years time are ditching all ports and everything is wireless.. I think. Imagine that outrage.

Till then, I'm waiting for my new MBP 15 inch to arrive in less than 2 weeks.. I hope.

I can't find where it states it is not compatible with the 2016 MBP. It only says that the 12" MacBook cannot run at 4K 60Hz and that's because it only has USB 3.1 gen 1. Did I miss something?

3rd bullet in the description below the price says...
  • Compatible with Retina MacBook 12" 2015 / 2016 (NOT compatible with late 2016 MacBook Pro), Chromebook Pixel 2015, Dell XPS 13 & 15 (6th gen / late 2015-2016), Lenovo P50 & P70, and future laptops, tablets, & desktops which comply with the VESA "DisplayPort Alternate Mode on USB Type-C Connector Standard"

Could it be something to do with: https://www.macrumors.com/2016/11/03/new-macbook-pros-thunderbolt-3-compatibility/

(I know that article is about TB3 and the adapter is USB-C but there could be some connection - same manufacturer, same problem.)

Does anyone now if the USB-C ports support DisplayPort Alternate Mode? Trying to figure out how to plug in a 4K monitor. Would rather use a cable instead of a dongle. Currently looking at this: http://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=12908.

At my desk I want to have one cable to plug-in that charges, connects to a USB3 switch, and connects to a display. But at this point the best solution seems like 3 separate cables.

Edit: 13” Touch Bar

I bought two dongles last week. Apple just sent me an email saying my account was credited the difference.

Fist time i've seem something like this from them, I think. It's a good move on their part; smoothing the transition. They must be taking a lot of heat.

Stock up :)

When they lowered the price of the original iPhone by $200 they gave me a refund without asking. So they've done that sort of thing before.

What dongles? Most of the supposed "dongles" are adapters. If you are using them you already have a cable plugged in, and using the adapter doesn't make it any more or less suitable for being on your lap.

Picked up:

USB-C to Lightning Cable
SanDisk USB-C card reader
USB-C Digital Media Adapter

Yeah, it's kind of odd I had to spend that money towards a new MBP, but I'll deal with it.
