Dongle thread for the new Macbook Pro's

Now that Apple's USB-C to USB-A adapter is cheaper, I'm planning to get two of them. I already have a USB-A to Ethernet adapter so I can connect the two adapters in series to get an Ethernet port.

Not really a dongle-only question, but a Hub/Dongle-Question. Hope that's fine too :)

I'm waiting for my new MBP 15" and trying to plan out the cable situation for my desk. After reading about the USB 3 Wifi Problems and some weird Thunderbold problems I'm super confused. Hope you guys can help me if I tell you what I'm looking for:

I've realized that many hubs do have a very short, fixed USB-C cable that connects the Hub to the Macbook. Since I'm using a stand for my macbook when I'm at my desk, this would mean the hub is kind of hanging in mid air – not very neat and tidy. So what I'm looking for is a hub with either a detachable cable or one that is at least 30cm long, so I can tuck it away behind my stand.
There aren't that many things I plan to connect, but it would be lovely to have 3 USB 3.0 ports for external harddrives. Any recommendations?

I also need a good way to connect my monitor (U2515H) which has a displayport and a hdmi connection. I'd prefer a direct cable over a dongle here, but at least in germany it seems there are either only cables without any reviews or they are 50€+ which seems a bit much...

In addition to that I'd need 2 very portable USB C to USB A dongles as well as a dongle for HDMI and one for VGA (definitely don't need all of them to be in one adapter). This is just for when I'm on the road and need to connect my mbp to a projector, etc. Looking for the cheapest reliable options here.

Thanks guys :):):)

So now that Apple dropped the prices, who is going to stick with the safe option and just but the Mac adaptors?
Got back like $100 from the discounts. Just turned around and bought a few more wires/cables.

Plus, I'm buying the 5k screen once available. Can't wait!!

Probably going to pick up Apple multi-port and belkin USB-C to Ethernet if nothing better comes out by December.

At the new price, I'm getting two of the 5k LG displays. Interestingly, this doesn't change much, since the only ports those displays offer are USB-C. It'll save on power cords, though.

5TB USB-C LaCie Desktop drive on sale too!

Seriously, I want the 5k display though.. December can't come soon enough!

What I haven't found yet is a single video dongle for both HDMI and VGA. Going to various venues, universities, etc. with projectors/monitors of different vintages, that would really be handy.

Agreed. I take my MBP to court, and you never know which cable you will need. DVI, hdmi, vga... it's a crapshoot. Would be nice to only need to carry one (reliable) adapter. (Since the marshalls make you take out all the connectors and wires so they can X-ray everything, too)

I think (maybe) the next round of docks and hubs may be better. It got off to a rocky start.

Frankly, I don't want to have to rely on OWC, Plugable, Startech, etc.

Some real misses there

I am sort of stunned that Apple doesn't make the thing. It would make a lot of sense for them to do it.

I expect to see a lot of very interesting debugging threads as people start getting their macbooks and docks and trying to make things work.

Apple is counting on you....

I got a bonus at work so Im going to use some of it to purchase a 4k LG Display since its on sale.

I'd be more tempted if they were better docks (say, Ethernet or thunderbolt 2 or old-style USB ports).

That, and... I have a 30" 2560x1600 display, and fonts are often Too Small under OS X. I can't imagine a 4k display being at all usable unless they just run the whole thing as if it were pixel-doubled, in which case it'd have the opposite problem, and there wouldn't be enough real estate. Blah.

Damn this price cut put me on the fence again. Can't decide if I should go the safe route and get the Apple dongles or risk it by having adapters. Picturing my laptop with a dongle just to use my wireless mouse seems a bit odd.

I am looking for an adapter that works with Macbook Pro 2016, no touch, 13 inch. All I need is USB-C with power port to charge laptop and at least 2 USB ports. Thx.

I think the issue will be with power. There are lots of dongles out there that have 2-3 USB and power passthrough but even for the low power 12"rMB I had to buy 3 different ones before finding one that actually worked. Most wouldn't pass power while a HD was connected via USB3. The one that does work on the 12" is the Plugable one. http://plugable.com/products/usbc-hub3p/

However, with the higher power requirements of the Pros I have a feeling most of the small hubs out there aren't going to work for power. That said, I don't think you really have to have power in the dongle as you have 3 other ports that can accept power. The 12"rMB was a PITA as it only had one USB-C port...

[doublepost=1478353811][/doublepost]Thanks for your reply. But I looked at the Plugable website, and the new Macbook Pro late 2016 is listed as incompatible. As I only have 2 ports, I need the adapter USB-C to USB to work with my external hard drive, and at least one other peripheral. The other port on USB-C port on laptop I can use to charge my laptop. Not all external hard drives work with adapters.

The Plugable site does say though that it will work without using it for power although they have found some USB2 devices not working.

I'm in the same boat, need one USB-C port for connecting to a 4k screen and the other USB-C port needs to handle Ethernet and charging. I'm looking into the Anker "Premium USB-C Hub with Ethernet and Power Delivery" https://www.anker.com/products/A8302041 but it's unclear if it's compatible with the Apple 61W charger.

I bought two dongles last week. Apple just sent me an email saying my account was credited the difference.

Fist time i've seem something like this from them, I think. It's a good move on their part; smoothing the transition. They must be taking a lot of heat.

Stock up :)
