Dongle thread for the new Macbook Pro's

So what adapters have you guys gotten? I see many of you guys opted for a hub but 4 ports for me is sufficient. I've just cancelled my order for the Nonda USB-C to USB adapter because it looks too wide, in the sense that you can't connect 2 adapters on one side of the laptop. Small thing, but something to consider. Apple's dongles are really tempting now with the price reduction but dongles... Just to plug my wireless mouse in.

What dongles? Most of the supposed "dongles" are adapters. If you are using them you already have a cable plugged in, and using the adapter doesn't make it any more or less suitable for being on your lap.

Eh, sorta. I have done laptop-with-ethernet-on-lap, and I have done laptop-with-ethernet-through-dongle-on-lap, and the latter is definitely very mildly more annoying.

It's more of an issue with things like the SD card reader, or a headphone jack. (One of which we still get, though.)

None yet. The frustrating fact is that it's easier to find a hub that's compatible with the single port of a MacBook than a hub that's compatible with the two ports of a MacBook Pro (w/o Touch Bar), as the latter has a higher power through requirement, most hubs do not support 4k/60Hz (which was no issue with the MacBook, as that didn't support that either), and - as you noticed - hubs that directly plug into the side of the laptop aren't viable as they cover the second port.

I want a dongle to connect my mini display port 2k screen to the new MacBook Pro. Is the Thunderbolt 3 to 2 what I should buy? Not sure if it will work in that case. I have a 2012 rmbp and the screen cable connected to the thunderbolt port (no adapters).

Nope. I believe the TB3 to 2 adaptor from Apple only works for TB devices (check https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207266). For minidp, you may want to check out hubs like https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FJPDWCI or http://www.bourgedesign.com/ I'm looking for one too, as I don't want to ditch all my old miniDP->VGA/HDMI/DVI dongles.

In the office, all I need is HDMI and Ethernet so I think this is what I'm going to get:

http://www.primecables.com/p-354262...dapter-type-c-charging-port-15cm-primecables-

Otherwise at home I just need power.

I do also need to hook in my phone into the computer at the office and home occasionally when testing apps on live devices, so for that I'm just getting a USB-C to Lightning cable.

Just ordered this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KV530UU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hey guys,

So I just ordered the new Macbook Pro and it would be great if we shared what we're choosing for dongles. Are you buying them separately or one that contains multiple ports?

I have a Belkin Express Thunderbolt-1 Dock. So all I need is one Adapter; Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter for $29. I've tested this yesterday using the 13-inch non-Touch Bar MBP and the Belkin dock is happy with this and I can get to all my current externals that include, TB-2 Promise PegasusR6 & R4 devices, OWC's ThunderBay 4 mini, USB2 & 3, FW800, Thumb Drives, USB Printer, ethernet for my networked printer and Internet access.

I've just received an email from Satechi regarding their multi-port hub and compatibility with the MacBook Pro:

Satechi Aluminum Multi-Port Adapter 4K HDMI, Type-C Pass Through, Ethernet, SD/Micro Card Reader, and 3 USB 3.0 Ports (link)
"The Aluminum Type-C Multi-Port Adapter is compatible with the New MacBook Pro. The Multi-Port Adapter supports Pass Through Charging at 49w."

Charging should be sufficient for the 13" MBPs (which ideally take 61W), but maybe not for the 15" MBPs (depending on your CPU usage). Unfortunately it only supports 4k/30Hz, so anyone who wants to connect a 4k/60Hz display should use the second MBP port and a DisplayPort cable.

Update: Satechi support also confirmed that Slim Multi-Port Adapter also charges a MBP at up to 49W.

I just think in the end maybe it's safer to just go for the Apple ones since if there's any issue one can always complain

That's what I did. Apple only. Well, and Belkin from a apple.com.

With their sale, it's the safest/best way imho.

D'oh. I assumed from the picture on the package showing it connecting to "a monitor" that it would work, but no, they actually mean only the thunderbolt monitor, not general displayport hardware.

Leaving me back at "I have no idea what I need to get in order to connect this machine to a displayport display". I'm probably gonna get one of the Kensington docks with power delivery and hope for the best.

Waiting on HDMI alt mode cables to be a thing. They announced them at the start of September, so we should be seeing something soon. Hoping the MBP is compatible, but I assume it will be since DP alt mode is a thing.

Does not recognise USB3 drive
I bought this alongside my MacBook so that I could backup my Mac. I now discover that this adapter is not compatible with USB 3.0 drives. Disappointed that this isn't mentioned on the packaging, nor was the information volunteered when I bought it.
Have you tried more than one USB3 drive? It says it doesn't work with the g-drive for some reason. But, all other indications is that it's USB 3. Perhaps your cable is bad??
[doublepost=1478595759][/doublepost]Also, it says it's 3.0 here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2895...ort-in-the-new-macbook.amp.html?client=safari
[doublepost=1478598747][/doublepost]Official Apple page. It's usb3.1: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204360

Hummm maybe you're right, but I see some reviews that mention it's not compatible with some 3.0 devices

Ahhh, it states in the product page:

Note: The Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter is not compatible with the G-Tech G-DRIVE mobile USB 3.0 Hard Drive (Apple part number HF4F2VC/A).

Have any of you found a multi port adapter that does 4K 60hz? Or would my best bet be to buy an hdmi 2.0 adapter and a hub that charges. I need charging, display output and one USB port for a wired mouse. A thunderbolt 3 dock makes no sense when I could basically get an EGpu solution for nearly the same price.

The qpple hdmi and usb adaptor only supports usb 2
I'll go for this one:
https://www.amazon.de/BC-Master-Anschlüsse-Netzwerkadapter-Energieklasse/dp/B01LYS5DRE/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1478603905&sr=8-11&keywords=usb-c+hub
Perfect for my needs, as I don't use an external Monitor:
  • Ethernet
  • 4x USB3
  • USB-C Connector to Laptop
  • USB-C Connector to Apple Charger

Careful. The Apple support page only mentions "allows you to… Charge your MacBook" without reference of charging capabilities for the MacBook Pro, and the BC Master hub also just mentions charging of "MacBook, Chromebook Pixel und USB-C compatible tables". In case these hubs support significantly less than the required 61W/85W, you will be discharging (!) your notebook while connected to the charger.

I've only seen (reliable) support for 4k/60Hz with docs that use Thunderbolt 2 or 3 to connect to the computer. Converting to HDMI seems to have some serious issues with 4k/60Hz, and integrating DisplayPort with a USB-C hub seems to be non-trivial. There's one hub announced that shall support the required version 1.4 of DisplayPort (the Bourge Design ARC Hub), but it might end up like other projects that swapped DP for HDMI in the last moment.

Personally I'd suggest using a USB-C to DP cable for connecting with the display at 4k/60Hz and a hub for charging and USB. Unfortunately most third party hubs (Aukey, Sanho, Anker, Monoprice, PrimeCables) have not announced the watts supported (and are rumored to be capped at less than 30W), and the best option I found so far is a $80 hub from Satechi which at least supports 49W.

Alternatively you could buy the CalDigit USB-C Dock for about $150. It's more expensive, but does not need an external charger. I just wonder how sure we can be that the power delivered by a third party hub does not fry the MBP on a small failure (there's a reason why Apple chargers are so expensive, they pack quite a lot of hardware for protection) – and as you can't purchase the hub at an Apple store, I believe even AppleCare won't cover the costs of repairing a MBP that has been fried.
