Hi all

So I've just ordered my new MBP. I will want a USB C Hub that definitely includes USB 3.0 and power, preferably Ethernet and if possible Screen connection (doesn't need to be 4K).

I see there are lots available on amazon but having read through this thread I note that many don't deliver (e.g. Not USB 3.0 or not powerful enough to charge).

Please can someone provide details of the hubs that are confirmed to satisfy the above (I imagine this could be a useful matrix to keep as a sticky :) )

Thanks!

Has anyone tried this one from Kensington (SD1500 USB-C Mobile Docking Station with HDMI/VGA, USB 3.0 & Gigabit Ethernet (K33969WW))?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G3JX74W

Seems to fit the bill for me at a (cough) reasonable price of $80. Only downside is no extra USB-C.

I emailed Satechi since I like one of their hubs, but it doesn't support 4k @ 60 hz nor provide enough power for pass through. They said they are in the process of developing a newer version but don't have an estimated time frame. Their current models provide a power output of 49w and of course 4k @ 30 hz.

Haven't tried the Kensington. I do note that it needs an ethernet driver, which is a slight source of concern for me. (I don't like to be reliant on a third-party choosing to keep drivers updated for MacOS, and there was one time when I had a RealTek card in an old PCI mac, and wow did that driver suck.)

I've got one of the Satechi mini-hubs. No 4k displays, and it doesn't matter much since none of my displays over 1080p work with HDMI. (I haven't bought monitors for a while.)

I got my PrimeCables hub in the mail today. It comes with hdmi 4K @ 60, Ethernet, USB-A 3.0 and USB-C charging. Looks really nice! It's not that super light crappy white plastic that lots of cheap stuff is made out of.
Hi, are you sure it does 4K @ 60Hz over HDMI?

Their site does not say that: http://www.primecables.com/p-354262...dapter-type-c-charging-port-15cm-primecables-

I am looking for an adapter that does at least 2560x1440 @ 60 Hz but am having trouble finding one. Any help appreciated.

It looks like we may have another gate for this MBP... I tried serval TB3 docks with the new MBP and none of them is supported under macOS (Works fine under Windows).

I got the hootoo dongle with the power passthrough but with only 29w of power what would you guys recommend instead that has HDMI, USB-A, SD-card reader, and pass through? if there isn't anything I'm thinking of just returning it and getting the hootoo adapter without pass through since its cheaper.

The HP ZBook TB3 one, the Dell TB3 (Square box) one and Razer Core.
Thanks for checking. IIRC, Razer Core is known not to work in macOS. Not sure on the other ones, maybe they use that older Texas Instruments chip that Plugable was planning on using?

Update 11/4/16: The version of OS X on the new MacBook Pros (late 2016) will not work with existing Thunderbolt 3 docks and adapters that were certified for Windows prior to the release of the MacBook Pro. These existing devices use first generation of TI USB-C chipset (TPS65982) in combination with Intel’s Thunderbolt 3 chipset (Alpine Ridge). Apple requires the 2nd generation TPS65983 chipset for peripherals to be compatible.

Maybe… it's really annoying now since not all TB3 devices will work with macOS and no manufacturer will tell you what power chip it use for the product.

Hmm, have had two kernel panics today. Both times I had my USB-C dongle plugged in with a USB-A drive running a time machine backup. Once the dongle is unplugged, my MBP runs fine. Once plugged in, I see a kernel panic within an hour.

Which dongle is this? The Apple one?

I just received the HooTooShuttle.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K7C53K2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Really only wanted additional USB ports.Have not tried the card reader or HDMI. Recognizes my G-Drive external HDD, but when I try to use Time Machine, continuous message that preparing G-Drive, and nothing happens. So I am using external drive directly in USB-C port on my late 2016, no touch bar, 13 inch MacBook Pro. I use the pass through charger on hub to power my laptop and USB port for iphone 6s plus. From reviews I read, though, functions only as USB 2 and not USB 3.And only provides 29 watts of power to charge my laptop. This will hold me over until better hubs/adapters are available.
thats a bit disappointing. I was looking at the hootoo for a while now. its also missing ethernet which kinda sucks

Not an Apple dongle, one off Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KV530UU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Though I just realized I was running VMware fusion in the background so that may have been it as well. I'm going to run it with the dongle tonight to run a full TimeMachine backup (a little over 300G to backup). Will see how it behaves.

So I had a panic again, without VMware Fusion running. I also noticed it's more reliable when NOT using the USB-A port. So it functions fine when I'm using just power pass-thru, HDMI, and ethernet.

So i just ordered my 13" skylake MBP.

I'm currently running a 2010 MBP on an external display (Displayport to Mini Displayport), along with 1x USB mouse, and 1x USB keyboard.

Does anyone know of a dongle (or combination of dongles/adapters) that may cover my need?

I thought about converting to using HDMI to USB-C but i don't know which is the most appropriate cable to connect my shiny new MBP to my external monitor (I thought it was DP?)

Thanks in advance for any advice.
A USB-C to DisplayPort cable should do the trick.

A USB-C to DisplayPort cable should do the trick.

Thanks! I'm currently using a "USB upstream" cable between my lappy and the monitor, then plugging in my external mouse and keyboard directly to my monitor.

It's my understanding that the new USB-C-equipped monitors handle all of this via the USB-C cable. I was wondering if there was a way to eliminate the USB-upstream monitor from my setup?

Cheers again.

I've spent time over the past couple of days trying to figure out the logistics of what I need to connect. I've determined that I don't want to get a USB-C hub that includes video out, at least not right now. I'm concerned by lackluster reviews of the hubs currently available. I'll be using my laptop for both work and home, and both have different needs. So here's what I'm going to use.

Work: I need an ethernet port, one USB 3.0 port, and two display ports. WiFi is too unreliable there , so I need a wired connection. This hub gives me USB and ethernet: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XU6PM6...TF8&colid=2HWB4ANUAF2HL&coliid=I1X0WNZCC1OA09

I'll use two of these for display output at work and one at home for a total of three. The monitors (Dells in both places) only have DP and DVI and no HDMI. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K51GM46/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2HWB4ANUAF2HL&coliid=I31INGWSBP1AMJ&psc=1

Home: I need one Thunderbolt 2 for an external drive, one display output, multiple USB 3.0 ports and an SD reader. I got Apple's USB-C to Thunderbolt 2 cable and their USB-C to USB 3.0 (female) cable. My monitor at home has a USB 3.0 hub built in, so multiple plugs are covered that way.

I'm getting this for SD reading. It's small and easily portable, and I can connect it to either the USB 3.0 hub or directly into the MacBook Pro if I'm not at home. I'm getting a male-female USB 3.0 cable for connecting it to the hub. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GR8E3E...lid=2HWB4ANUAF2HL&coliid=I11F6Q5LN2NNJV&psc=1

That appears to cover all my needs in all cases.

Received my Satechi hub from Amazon today. Thus far, it is working as advertised. I have my WD My Passport For Mac 3TB drive connected to one of the USB ports and it is moving right along with the first Time Machine backup.. I have the Ethernet port engaged and the Mac is staying charged thanks to the USB-C passthrough port (Late 2016 MBP non touch bar). I like this hub better than the ones that slide right against the side of your Mac. This way, I shouldn't have to worry about my Mac getting damaged from a push-in-hub.

That's nice. Do you have an external monitor to try out the HDMI port? Does it do 2560x1440 @ 60 Hz?
