Will Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter work with Thunderbolt 1?

I plan on using my 2011 (Thunderbolt 1 equipped) 27" I Mac as an external display occasionally with my new 2016 Pro and would like to know before I purchase said dongle.

Cheers.

Does anyone have a recommendation for an adaptor that has high speed transfer rates that is simply an SD card reader and USB adaptor?

Still not clear for me about the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter from Apple.

I have 2 displays which I currently use with Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cables. Is the Apple adapter right in order to keep using these displays with the new MacBook Pro without buying new cables?

Thanks

No.

It works only for Thunderbolt 2. It does not work for MiniDisplayPort.

Can someone answer my question>

I own a Dell 4k monitor p2715q and I ordered the new macbook pro with touchbar. I will connect these two with DP to usb-c cable. Can one power charge the monitor and also charge the macbook simultaneously?

This is the cable I ordered: http://www.monoprice.com/product?p_...&utm_medium=11051853&utm_term=VigLink-2470763

In theory it probably should be able to, but there's been compatibility concerns, so basically no one will know until someone has one to try it.

EDIT: I was wrong. I was just assuming that you were talking about a monitor which advertises charging-over-video-cable in the first place. Without that, no.

No. DisplayPort does no carry power for charging. You can only charge your MBP via native USB-C monitors (USB-C connection at both ends of the cable).

Thank you. I think you are correct. There are only a few monitors on the market which can do that.

Definitely will not be able to power the MacBook from the DisplayPort of the P2715q. Need native usb-c.

Hi all,

This might be a stupid question, but if I were to buy a multi-purpose dongle (like this one https://www.bourgedesign.com/pre-order) is there any performance issues if so much is being connected via one single USB-C port on the MBP? I use my MBP to DJ and will have multiple usb keys and my usb midi controller. They are usually plugged into separate ports on my current mid 2010 MBP. I've ordered the new MBP and intended on getting separate dongles to convert from USB-C to original usb-3, as well as USB-C to minidisplay. If I go with one device for all, will I see latency issues?

Thx in advance

If the dongle's TB3-based, you shouldn't really, because it's got 40Gbps of bandwidth to play with. If it's actually USB-based, and you're doing a ton of things, maybe, but...

USB keys are probably very low traffic, and MIDI is virtually no data at all by modern standards, so I basically wouldn't worry.

I saw a couple of USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapters on Amazon but they don't have very good reviews.

Any recommendations on that? or better go straight with a USB-C to DisplayPort cable like the Cable Matters USB-C to DisplayPort 4K 60Hz Cable in Black (Thunderbolt 3 Port Compatible) - 6 Feet and discard the Mini DP to DP cables I'm currently using?

And one more question

I'm also looking for a USB-C to HDMI adapter which supports 4k at 60Hz. Belkin has one coming soon at $60 but I saw this other one Moshi USB-C to HDMI Adapter https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1277033-REG/moshi_99mo084202_usb_c_to_hdmi_adapter.html a little bit cheaper.

Which one would be a better ans safer choice considering I need it to support 4k@60Hz?

Thanks again

I honestly have no clue. I got a USB-C to DisplayPort cable which claims to support full resolution, but I have no idea whether it will work, just gotta try stuff and find out.

This thread is sort of depressing. 22 pages and what we've found out so far is that no one is sure.

I don't understand why apple doesn't come out with a USBC multi port that supports 4K at 60hz. I tried the current multi port adapter and it sucks. It will give me 4K at 30hz but it looks like crap and it won't even allow me to do scaling to get a retina type look only full 2160p.

I just bought a PS4 pro for my 4K TV instead screw it I don't really need to hook anything up to the mac.

Pretty sure that won't be TB3, although i don't know that it'll matter, since I think USB type C will still be faster than the hardware in question needs anyway.

But honestly, no one knows. Best bet is to wait until a lot more people have their machines and let us suckers test stuff for you and report back.

Ha, good point. I am waiting because my MBP is not supposed to come in until Dec 13, but I continue to wonder.

Yes according to https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT207266

I bought the pluggable.com USB-C to HDMI 2.0 adapter. They have many USB-C and DisplayPort and Thunderbolt 3 adapters (but check their detailed specs and compatibility information first). If the MacBook Pro doesn't support 4K @ 60Hz through the adapter then it's a problem with Apple's driver and it needs a patch to remove a MHz limit. I like Pluggable because they have more detail about their products, and forums where they answer questions about their products.

I need an SD card reader as well as one or two additional USB ports, does anyone think this is a good option? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B2OYFB...TF8&colid=37D0XVOSJZ9MT&coliid=I1P2RH8741O0YJ

I really want to take advantage of the TB3 speed if possible.

Hi guys

This adapter appeals to me

AUKEY USB C HUB Ethernet 3 Port USB 3.0 + USB C Port with PD ( Power Delivery ) + Gigabit Ethernet USB Type C Hub With charging for Type C PC and Tablets including New Macbook, Macbook Pro 2016, Google ChromeBook Pixel 2015 ( Black ) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01G1LNVZM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_u-ckybM67Z433

The USBC port on it, if I didn't use it to charge then would I be able to use it as a regular USBC port for a monitor (USBC to DVI)?

Wonder if there's a passthrough device that can be made for a more permanent setup - DisplayPort to an AC-powered box to inject power into the line leaving a female USB-C coming from the passthrough device that then is carrying both signal and power.

That seem possible?

I do not support Aukey because they list several of their products on a single product page, which gives you a high rating with many reviews of many different products dating back to 2004.

For example: you may be looking at the reviews for an Ethernet Hub for USB C 3.0 - and the total reviews contain an old USB A 2.0 hub from 2007 (which makes up 99% of the reviews).

This practice that goes on with Amazon is disgusting - and Aukey is one of the worst at this.

Im not saying you cant filter reviews by specific products - but Im saying only some brands abuse this rating system and Aukey is one of the worst.

Personally I would give ugreen and Anker a look. In the ugreen reviews they sometimes list a direct email to their team, and Im waiting for a response back on a TB3 to VGA adapter.

Has anybody tried any of the HooToo hubs?

I just received the HooTooShuttle.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K7C53K2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Really only wanted additional USB ports.Have not tried the card reader or HDMI. Recognizes my G-Drive external HDD, but when I try to use Time Machine, continuous message that preparing G-Drive, and nothing happens. So I am using external drive directly in USB-C port on my late 2016, no touch bar, 13 inch MacBook Pro. I use the pass through charger on hub to power my laptop and USB port for iphone 6s plus. From reviews I read, though, functions only as USB 2 and not USB 3.And only provides 29 watts of power to charge my laptop. This will hold me over until better hubs/adapters are available.

Are you able to confirm that it doesn't run at USB 3.0? Seems like it's lacking a lot of functionality.
