Just returned my ATV4!
Completely unable to set up. This is just not acceptable for any Apple product.
Would not connect to device via bluetooth for set up and on manual failed every time on date and time.
This happened on both wifi and ethernet.
So not fit for purpose suggest no one buys it until it does work.

The auto setup via BT worked perfectly for me. You either have a defective unit or did something wrong.

Set up worked fine for me, Im just getting zero audio regardless of setting. They worked on it for this long and its still this buggy? Garbage

Sounds like you either have a defective unit or something in your system isn't setup correctly.

Most people have working AppleTV units, out of the box.

I own a boat load of Apple products.
Desktops
Laptops
Tablets
Phones
Accessories beyond imagining.

They _all_ have one thing in common, the setup routines fast and easy.

All are so well thought out and executed it gives one a very nice experience. Furthermore they're very logical setup routines. Each time I setup any of my new Apple devices every few months or so, I'm reminded of why I buy Apple.

I may report my personal preferences and disagreements with Apples well known attitude on some things, I may report my personal experiences when on new products the quality doesn't live up to Apples excellence quality and functionality of the past, but I'm one who remains satisfied overall.

ATV4 has its problems which is why I'm delaying purchase, but I believe the problems you're having go far beyond ATV4.

Why are these threads allowed? I do not understand why this crap is not just delete it.

Are you suggesting no one buy it until it works for YOU? I bought one, works perfectly and no complaints. Assume this is a case of unrealistic expectations, poor research, user error or all of the above.

Mine is going back too as depending on the codec used the new ATV4 won't play certain MPEG-4 files. Rang support and they say yes they know and I would have to re-convert to play them using H.264 codec.

All played fine on ATV3 and I have a very large collection that already took me months to convert. Tried on 1 file to use the conversion (handbrake) and it made it playable on new ATV4.

Bluetooth for me also not working and really naff having to use new remote to enter passwords.

Have just bought one from a UK Apple Store.

Got home and plugged in. Up comes a Japanese start up menu. The remote doesn't do anything. Bluetooth setup doesn't seem to do anything either.

The remote will restart the machine but only in Japanese. Not only do I not live in Japan, I don't speak Japanese.

Seriously not impressed so far.

It will go back in the morning

Such a misleading, I got my atv4 last night and it's much faster than the slow atv3, streaming loads extremely quicker and the overall interface is fantastic

They've reduced the codec support? Jesus...

Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster.

Just thought I'd share my experience as it may help someone in a similar situation. I'm almost certain the OP didn't have a defective unit. While I can understand their frustration, it's something you can resolve!

Bought my ATV4 yesterday and set it up last night (eventually). Upon initial setup I received an 'unable to set date and time' error just after inputting my wifi details. Tried everything - resetting router, ATV reset, connecting via Ethernet. Same error every time!

Now I must say my abode is awash with Apple gear - never Ever had a problem setting anything up - MacBooks, iPads, iPhones, ATV3 - it just works right? (my router is even a current gen AirPort Extreme).

Was about to give up as a dud unit and return to store when I came across some forum posts regarding users having similar problems. I think some routers block certain ports - may be wrong - but port 123 is used to communicate with a network time server (hence unable to set date/time) and this was blocked.

Quick solution - use the wifi hotspot on my iPhone to connect the ATV to this network, finish the setup process and switch back to my home network again once finished. Worked a treat!

Hope this helps somebody out there with similar problems.

Very very pleased with my ATV4 by the way!

I started with one...and yesterday ended setting up the third ATV 4 in my house. It is SO much better than my previous ATV 3 units. I look forward to all the new apps, and also hope that Apple will actively continue to evolve the OS to close some existing gaps (no external keyboard support etc.)
