Also, people should go online to the apple store and do the apple chat thing and ask about the 3g iPhone, just to see if we have a .00000000001% chance of some newbie spilling the beans. Yes I know this won't happen but just try.

You can go ahead and waste your time but I think I can wait 4 more days.

No one says anyone has to wait in line. People could continue to wander the conference - it could be an all-day process, with people going in to purchase their phones whenever they like. If they've got enough for everyone, it's not going to be so much of a necessity that people will have to camp for them. Everyone would get theirs eventually.

This would be true if this were a show where there's a show floor and you wander around the conference looking at things. WWDC is not that-- instead you have specific one-time only sessions that last from xx to yy and then you've got 15 minutes to get to the next session.

The other point to consider from a developer's perspective, is that we've already vetted our software for the *current* iPhone. Proper testing methodologies would indicate that we should test on the new device as well. If the phones are available immediately (presumably with the AppStore in place), then this would generally mean that you should hold publishing your code until such time as you can actually fully test on the new device.

This is one reason that I wouldn't be surprised if Apple made a general availability for the new iPhone on the 27th or the 20th, but did make iPhones available to attendees (either iPhone developers or all). If they did that, though, I'd still expect them to do it via the store. i.e. use this specific site with your attendee information and we'll have a brand new 3G iPhone waiting for you when you get home on the 16th. That way the conference would have minimal impact, and you get devices in the peoples hands that need them soonest when they can actually use them.

Regardless, we'll know one way or another come Monday.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the info.

I wasn't really arguing for a WWDC-release per se, just the general feasibility of the idea. But you make a good point.

Then there's the two hours you get for lunch, or the time after the last session each night where there's usually something else going on at the conference center.

I think they'll be available pretty much immediately...

Actually, Apple can be a whole lot smarter about it -

They can offer the new products for sale online on the WWDC web site, allowing attendees to create/enter the transaction to actually buy a phone, then just pick it up at admissions, or some temporary store.

I have no doubt that Apple will do everything within their power to make it as easy as possible for the WWDC attendees to turn over more money :)

If I were you, I'd be setting up camp at the 5th Ave. store by Friday morning. Just to be safe ... :p

I'll also bet that Apple does a simultaneous worldwide launch - in order to sell "a billion in iPhones" that first week or weekend. With a worldwide launch, somebody would get the short end of the stick and have the selling start at 3:00 in the morning. I'd bet they start selling right after the keynote is over - that way, the US and Europe could take advantage of the kickoff. Japan and Korea would have to wait for the morning...
