That ugly notch adds nothing but fragmentation to apps and user experience.
What notch?! Can't see any notch in the pictures in the article!

An iPhone X with apps that don't support the fullscreen is a notch haters dream!

Software bezels FTW!

Isn’t Chase supposed to be the most technologically advanced bank?

No more 'technologically' advanced than say....

Bank of America Corp.
Wells Fargo & Co.
Citigroup Inc.
Goldman Sachs Group Inc.
Morgan Stanley
U.S. Bancorp
TD Group US Holdings LLC
PNC Financial Services Group Inc.
Bank of New York Mellon Corp.
Capital One Financial Corp.
State Street Corp.
BB&T Corp.
SunTrust Banks Inc.
or HSBC USA Inc.

I would love it if EA would update Real Racing 2 for iOS11, since it doesn't work at all on my X. They recently released an update for NFS Hot Pursuit (which is an 8 year old game) to fully support the X, so they have no excuse not too. Getting an update for NFS most wanted would be good too, which is the last good racing game they made, before they went IAP mad.

I'm not a developer, but can't blame them if they're frustrated with all this fragmentation. iPad 10.5 was just released, and now there's rumor of another notch/no notch smaller bezel iPad? iPhone X+ and other sizes of iPhones? Not to mention backwards compatibility with all the prior devices. Sheesh.

I could be wrong in saying this, but doesn't Android automatically resize apps and move their buttons around in order to fit any display? Like, it's an actual feature built into Android due to the myriad of devices out there. Why doesn't Apple implement the same approach? That way developers never have to worry about this?

That still requires work from the developer. They need to flag which buttons may be moved, how to handle them, etc. Otherwise you'd lose the control of your own app. The exact same thing can be accomplished in iOS. Apple has what is called "screen size classes", to specify how UI elements should behave on different sized screens. Big difference is that Android encompasses so many different screen types and sizes that devs go into development knowing they have to handle that. With iOS, they may just think "There's SE, normal and Plus".

At least, they are one of the major banks that does take care of our veterans by giving them a totally free checking account with no minimal balance; unlike some other banks...(I am staring at you, BoA!)

Back on topic, how can Apple still not updating their own apps to support the X? It gives the developers the perfect reason not to spend resources to adapt the screen if Apple does not even have their own house cleaned up!

Can confirm ANZ Australia banking app does use the full real estate on the iPhone X. Was updated a number of weeks ago. It doesn’t help they have two banking apps...

Yeah ANZ has a new app which supports full screen and is really good.

I think gomoney will be phased out

One of the main reasons I decided to wait for the 2018 iPhone X. By the time the new phone is out, mostly all developers will have updated their app UI’s.

That and in my opinion they'll improve the iPhone too. This time the real deal might be revealed to the public. My iPhone 6s hols very well and I am not in a hurry to upgrade my device.

I agree. It's the way it should have been. The area to the left and right of the notch should be black for statuses/icons only. It would draw attention away from the nasty notch and not take away from the app experience.

Well if they aren't complying themselves, how are they supposed to require compliance from devs.

Touche! ;-)

They have to get their own house in order first before they can do that.

Someone else posted the same thing... you make a good point.

Sadly many of the things that made Apple appealing over Android for so many years is slowly slipping away....

.... but we have more emojis than ever in history... and Animoji! .... sigh

Please mother of God, give me a Samsung phone with iOS on it.

I'd like a device halfway between a iPhone X and a SGS9+, with an OS halfway between iOS and Android Oreo.

Thanks for running this article, Joe. It's egregious and embarrassing of Apple months after launching the iPhone X to still have widely-used apps that don't support it (and in many cases, haven't even been updated for iOS 11). If they can't bother to update their apps with the massive amount of resources and staff they have available, why should any other company?

I never understood how some of these big companies that have well-funded app dev teams take so long to make such simple changes.

I remember how long it took my banking apps to get updated for the iPhone 4 -> 5 screen size increase, then AGAIN it took ages to be updated after the iPhone 6/6+ screen size increase.

They have millions and millions of customers having to look at an ugly zoomed in or weirdly cropped display for months, sometimes years after a device comes out. Don't they realize this makes them seem lazy and incompetent?

EDIT: For the record, the Chase app STILL doesn't support Touch ID on the iPad, and looks like you went back in time five years when you use it on one. People have been bugging them to fix their iPad app for years, but they don't. WTF.

Why should they, you guys have been reporting rumors that they are doing away with it.

I reached out to The Economist per a subscription price increase and specifically asked about an app update to support the iPhone X screen. They responded that an update is “due soon”. Meanwhile, their Economist Espresso app was fully updated sometime ago. Cheers.

If you’ve used the X for any meaningful amount of time you would know that the notch doesn’t interfere with anything. Stop reading fake news.

Some developers chose IOS because it's NOT fragmented, few screen sizes to support, but now they can't keep up with Apple releasing new screen size every year.

Most of those apps don't seem like a big deal. Biggest ones might be iMovie, Steam, and Alexa. With iMovie being neglected, I'm thinking editing movies on iPhones must not be very popular. Using a phone to edit a video wouldn't be my first choice.

Everyone needs to get on board and adjust their apps for iPhone X. Daddy’s got a new phone and he wants to fill the screen! Especially video apps. I like being able to go fullscreen/widescreen on certain videos.

Oh, and iMovie. C’mon, guys! Don’t even get me started...

This is the problem with updating for iPhone X. Simulator will not work with most of the apps so if you are a developer you have to buy an iPhone X in order to test your stuff and you have also to boy a regular iPhone. 90% or more of iOS developers are indie and many do not profit enough per month to invest on two devices. Apple is not helping anyone because there is no subsidy price for developers.

So, do not hold your expectations high for 90% of the apps. They will simply not be updated.

... unless Apple starts to show some love for developers.

I have fond memories of iTunes Remote.
A 2005 airport express, an overpriced white Monster audio out cable, a bookshelf stereo, a core2duo Mac mini "server" and iTunes Remote on the original iPhone. Really was a great experience for its time.
I guess apple music has pushed it to the past.

Its actually that experience that makes me want a homepod.
