So tell us how it actually is, dude. I just chose the parts that made me and others concerned. It's not like I misquoted the thing. I don't put a whole book in a footnote either.

The EULA does mention using the Speech Data to improve speech recognition, but also "other components of the Service," not defined. And it's not just names they appropriate, it's your voice files, transcriptions, and data logs.

I'm just sayin' that it's easy to get carried away with a new gizmo, but in these digital days it's important to be particularly careful about who gets access the details of your life. I pay with PayPal whenever I can b/c I want as few entities as possible to have my financial info. I also shred credit card offers, even though no one's probably going through my trash and it'd need my signature even if they did. Maybe I'm overcautious, but the gee-whiz factor doesn't make it worth it for what most people will use this for, imo.

"I will not make any alterations to this post so that you can get some sense of the programs accuracy. I am however probably the enunciated more than normal."

so all it didn't understand was enunciating.

What happens if youdownload the app and you test it once? At that point you have already transfered all your contact to the server right?

How about I do a full restore to the phone will that help?

The Dragon will soon Jott

Agreed. You'd never know from many of the comments, but this is ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT. Now. How much will they eventually charge for it? Who knows, but I'll tell you... Jott... they're screwed. I will be canceling my $4 monthly subscription immediately. This is VERY quick and doesn't leave me with the impression I'm being run through Mechanical Turk.

The company that makes Dragon Dictate (Nuance) bought out Jott. http://bit.ly/5o4AjE

hmmm...

How do you put the explicit words 'period' or 'comma' into a transcription other than by typing?

The app is great. It works correctly around 95% of the time, if not more. It's not a bad thing that it forces us to enunciate properly. Overall, I am impressed.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Just say it.

Period, exclamation mark, coma, question mark, all work. Tried quotation marks, and it didn't work.

******never mind, just reread your post****

I believe that when Dragon 9 came out users were asked if they would accept Dragon's servers analysing some of their data. This information was used to make Dragon 10 much more accurate. I guess the app is free so that they can get a large user base and get lots of data to improve the next version of Dragon. It's probably no more sinister than that.

As for why only the U.S, it's probably either because the app only supports U.S. accents at the moment or they're focussing on improving voice recognition results for American users. I wouldn't have thought there was too much of a difference between U.S. and Anglophone Canadian accents, but maybe their voice recognition engine gets utterly perplexed by people finishing every sentence with 'eh'.

Too Big of a Privacy Violation

I was all set to start using this app....and then I noticed the end user agreement that tells the user his/her contact information will be obtained from the phone. This is too big of a privacy violation for me to proceed with using this app. If they can fix it, I would be very eager to try it out, and I think it could be useful. But not like this. No way!

Yeah, it ALMOST fits into the too good to be true category. C'mon a free speakwrite that is ~93% successful? Unheard of in the Appstore, hence the extreme privacy breach.

Cut it out, ladies.
So never use e-mail, never use GMail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, etc. Because folks ALL that contact info is stored online. ALL of your mail is search-able ANYWAY... Jeeze the over-reaction is mind boggling. Or stupid. Or both.
The app works perfectly as far as I can see, and it WILL save me some time.

And this from Nuance's Web Site:

Some people have expressed concern about what the new Dragon Dictation for the iPhone application does with your contact information. As you may have experienced already, Dragon Dictation for the iPhone goes through your contact list on your iPhone and uploads the names to our server. We do this for a pretty simple reason: we found that people are often dictating names from their address book and expect the names to be recognized. We take this information and create an anonymous user profile for your device that understands what names are likely to dictate into a document. It's important to note that we only upload the names, not the e-mail addresses, phone numbers or any other personally identifying information from your contacts.

Even though there is no personally identifying information, we still treat all of this information with the highest privacy standards. All of our servers are located in the United States and meet the most stringent privacy and security standards. We conform to these high standards because we use the same data centers for other areas of our business where we are required to store personal information.

All of this is spelled out in our license agreement that comes with the Dragon Dictation for the iPhone application. Since most people only see that license agreement briefly when they are installing the software (and they usually can't wait to start using their software, so they don't spend 30 minutes reading a complex legal document...), we provided a link to that agreement here: http://www.nuance.com/company/privacy/.

So the bottom line is that nothing scary is happening with your data and we only use a little bit of information from your phone to help make the dictation accuracy as high as possible. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, feel free to post them here.

Have you ever done a Google search on the words "dragon naturally-speaking reviews"? It's spotty at best and expensive.

Have you ever actually known anyone that uses it, much less tried for yourself? This isn't spotty, and at the present, the brand new app is free of charge. I highly doubt you even had the app at the time of your post - all of 2 minutes after the article's post.

I just said 'chicken and a giant piece of cheese' to screw with it, and just that popped up. It works near flawlessly if you actually use normal diction. Best voice recognition I've ever worked with. Period. Ford Sync: Please take notes. :)

I suppose it would be bad for them if an Al Qaeda terrorist with an iPhone would use this to transcribe a ransom or jihad letter. Nuance would have that on file, along with all the operatives in his Contacts list...

Looks great, shame they are limiting it to the US only. Last time I checked we spoke pretty much the same language as the Americans here in the UK!

For everyone jumping up and down and wondering about why this is a U.S.-only app (so far) I believe it is because of legalities. Pure and simple. Their EULA is contractually set up to comply with American government compliances. Until they supply another version or comply with other country's version of this, it looks like it will be a U.S. version for now and submitted country by country for later. This could be because of compliance with the U.S. Government's subpoenas or submissions that other countries do not or will not agree with.

Just my two cents.

Wow. I was skeptical but this thing actually works. It doesn't know any specific scientific terms (not that I expected it to) so it will pretty much only be useful for those notes in the car not related to my research, but it's pretty sweet. :D

Yyyyep. Been using in about 15 minutes... it made ONE mistake.
5 stars.
Time it takes me in e-mailing from my phone decreased 10X or more.

This all kind of reminds me of the RemoteTap reviews. People give it one star because they can't configure it! (though for this app it SEEMS to be a comprehension issue)
That's another wondrous app.

maybe it likes american accents more - every time i use it (australian) it gets so many mistakes. i know its not my voice, the voice software for playing music on the iphone works fine...
