This thread is filled with blind ignorance and stupidity. There is no polite way to look at it. It's stunning. I used the Jott service for a while. Guess what... it uploads my voice transcriptions to their server, and they send me back text. The Google Mobile app does the same thing, when it records the audio and sends it back to their servers from analysis. I was actually hoping for a while, that some service would provide streaming mp3 text-to-speech audio from a web server, after you post text to it (but then the 3Gs seems capable of synthesizing speech by itself (without the aid of hardcore servers offloading the task).Cut it out, ladies.
So never use e-mail, never use GMail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, etc. Because folks ALL that contact info is stored online. ALL of your mail is search-able ANYWAY... Jeeze the over-reaction is mind boggling. Or stupid. Or both.
The app works perfectly as far as I can see, and it WILL save me some time.
I can't help thinking they just threw it out, and used other translating technology. I'm left thinking Jott was a purchase more for other technology (like making it phone-based), talent/engineers, and business relationships. And improved on their technology, to an enormous extent.

Agreedslightly off-topic, or rather on-topic but not specifically about this app:
i do not think it's a question of how important one sees oneself. it is more an issue of "do i want people (companies, governments etc) to collect info about me? why do they do this? what will they do with the info?"
i find it interesting to see many young people posting their data on the web without a care (home addresses, phone numbers, address books, etc) and i can understand that they see no harm in it. but for those who have lived in other systems and/or other times, it is a very sensitive issue. believe me: after growing up in a totalitarian state and knowing that every private meeting, every conversation was being noted, and records kept about who you were communicating with... i understand people not wanting their private data uploaded to a faceless company's computers. they promise not to pass it on, but you can no longer control this. people in many countries have ended up in jail and concentration camps because of these records of their activity.
no i am NOT saying this app is dangerous, and happily most of us are not living in totalitarian states, but caution is healthy. times change, systems change, presidents change, companies get sold and bought - along with their records.
best regards
B
I did not look through the 114 replies but you need a mic for your touch. Just buy a pair of iphone headphones with the mic and you're set.
Sent an email stating that the Touch does have recording capability and wifi connectivity while asking what restrictions hardware wise limit the app to the iPhone.
Let's hope I get a fairly clear and reasonable answer.

Nuance Communications today announced the release of Dragon Dictation [App Store, Free for a limited time], a new voice transcription application for the iPhone. The application, which relies on the Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech recognition engine to transcribe voice input to text, allows users to easily send transcribed text to new e-mail or text messages or save it to the clipboard for pasting into other applications. The application works by transmitting spoken input to Nuance's central servers, where it is processed by the transcription algorithms and returned to the user's device. Consequently, the application does requires a data connection in order to function. With the Dragon Dictation App, spoken words are instantly transcribed using the world-renowned power of Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech recognition, giving anyone the power to simply "say anything" up to five times faster than typing. Dragon Dictation allows users to speak anything from a one-line text message or status update for Facebook, to a multi-paragraph e-mail. For instance, simply say, "We should meet at the restaurant at 7 and then go to the movies. I'll pick up Scott in Cupertino after he gets off work. See you then." Users can start and stop as needed or just speak free form to capture a quick brainstorm idea or reminder. It's completely up to you.
The application offers editing options including alternative suggestions for misinterpreted phrases and built-in keyboard functionality for manual editing of text. The application also offers voice corrections, allowing users to highlight a selected portion of text and replace it with newly-spoken phrases.
Several users have noted a potential privacy issue with Dragon Dictation, however, with a number of iTunes Store user reviews noting that the license agreement for the application reveals that data from users' lists of contacts will be sent to Nuance and stored on its servers.
Dragon Dictation is free for a limited time, and Nuance will in the near future be releasing Dragon Search, a second iPhone application allowing users to conduct voice searches of a number of sources including search engines, YouTube, Twitter, iTunes, and Wikipedia.

The only e-mail of mine that is received by Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, etc. is spam. They are my junk mail accounts. The rest of my personal/work e-mail goes to privately hosted servers. My e-mail is not directly searchable anywhere online. I do not send work-related e-mails to any accounts that are not privately hosted.Cut it out, ladies.

Bunch of gibberish that provides zero legal protections. What "standards"?And this from Nuance's Web Site:
[...]
Even though there is no personally identifying information, we still treat all of this information with the highest privacy standards. All of our servers are located in the United States and meet the most stringent privacy and security standards. We conform to these high standards because we use the same data centers for other areas of our business where we are required to store personal information.
Except this isn't the agreement in the software! All of this is spelled out in our license agreement that comes with the Dragon Dictation for the iPhone application. Since most people only see that license agreement briefly when they are installing the software (and they usually can't wait to start using their software, so they don't spend 30 minutes reading a complex legal document...), we provided a link to that agreement here: http://www.nuance.com/company/privacy/.
I suspect whoever from Nuance posted this didn't talk with their lawyer first. There is also a lack of information on what protection is provided to your speech data. Nuance does seem to be trying to respond to this as quickly as possible though. So the bottom line is that nothing scary is happening with your data and we only use a little bit of information from your phone to help make the dictation accuracy as high as possible. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, feel free to post them here.
Can I still keep my phone? Apps that steal your information should be illegal; it is akin to a phone tap.
My guess as to why this app will store your contacts is mostly on the practical side rather than the nefarious one. Once the app is paid they'll probably add features, and wouldn't it be great if after dictating a message you could just say something like, send as text to so and so, or send as email to so and so. And the only way for this to work would be if they knew the person and the contact info for that person. I don't like talking on the phone when driving because I can often get stuck on the phone for a long time, and I never text while driving, so the ability to dictate a text AND SEND IT while never taking my eyes off the road is perfect and probably what they have in mind down the road.
Oh and as far as them releasing info upon a subpoena, just about everything from your email provider to your bank would do that, it's the purpose of a subpoena, to mandate that anyone holding your info release it to the authorities, I'd be less concerned with them disclosing it, and more concerned with what on earth do you do that would have people getting subpoena's on you???
What use of it when it's not available in the European App Store!
Apple, the most non-American of all american companies, is making itself no favor by rendering such obvious US-favouritism.
The application will either never appear in European iTunes stores, or not before it costs a good measure! Idiocy!
Here we go, as ever: RedNeck-centrism* persists in iTunes!
* To pacify some who might find my notion disagreeable, I allow that not all americans are rednecks, but I'm sure most are.
Nota Bene: It's also quite irritating that OS X Dictionary and spell checker prefer to "-ize" all verbs ending with "-ise". Next, the word "Gentleman" will give way to "dude" and "lady" to "*****". The word "gay" will find an official connotation that has nothing to do with either gaiety or homosexuality and start meaning "undesired" or "bad" or "of poor quality" or "strange" (that's quite an extensive semantical range!)

Many companies consider their contact lists to be their intellectual property.
I am legally bound to protect many of the recordings I would like to make and transcribe.
Being ignorant about personal privacy is BOTH mind boggling and stupid.
Don't care about your opinion.

Maybe i'ts agood idea to start a website listing all suspected apps that steal information. An early warning system for these sort of apps seems ever more nescesary since more personal info is stored on your phone. Or even better: Little Snitch for iPhone!![]()
Do you have five locks on your door as well? Many companies consider their contact lists to be their intellectual property.

Dude! You guys were the first to get hairy-legged chicks and beer and stuff like that! How about letting us be the first to get an insignificant app!Originally Posted by LeoNobilis

You're making a mountain out of a mole hill. Once again, they only store *names* within your contact list. If you're that protective of something as simple as names within your contact list, maybe you should be evaluating your life instead of this software.![]()
Psssttt...you don't happen to have Jimmy Hoffa on your contact list do you? Eh...never mind.
BTW...since your contact list is only sent once to Nuance, how about doing this:
1. Turn off contact sync'ing in MobileMe
2. Delete all contacts on your iPhone.
3. Install the Nuance app. (and use it).
4. Re-sync your iPhone and turn MM sync'ing back on.
Problem solved!![]()
