Actually in Florida you have to be a business/ have a tax ID to get Applecare... I havent gotten it for either of my computers (2003 iBook and 4 week old PM G5), but that does not mean I cant. The reason I buy all my macs under business use is because of Applecare. But there are computer insurances out there that you pay like 100 something a month and they cover accidents.

www.safeware.com

Covers accidental damage like this 3" Drop..

Interesting that such a small drop caused a problem. I once had my iBook on my car's front seat, and when I quickly stopped it flew forwards, hit the dashboard, then dropped onto the floor. It still worked perfectly afterwards.

the same EXACT thing happened to me. I knew I should have put a seat belt over my PB.

Hmmm the warranty on my car is if ANYTHING happens to it for a year they fix it free of charge. no questions asked, now if only apple could be like this.

Were did you buy your car? I want to buy mine there ?

Seriously??

I worked in 2 dealerships, both multi brand dealerships.. if we found evidence of misuse on parts, and or the car itsel, we would not cover associated damages under warranty. And in some cases the warranty would be voided.

ex.. Customer got into a fight with his passanger IN his car, The stereo display was punched, and the climate controls were destroyed. The driver didn't cause the damage, but we still didn't cover it under warranty.

By the way. Florida law prohibits apple computer to sell applecare warranties. Florida sees it as an illegal scam and won't allow it. Sooo you can't buy applecare in florida. Just an fyi. So florida sees it as a scam, maybe it is. I think so. IBM and many other give a 3 year warranty (on most units) as standard. On top of that. Apple gives a 1 year warranty but after 90 days if you have a problem and call apple they charge you $50 just to talk to them about your broken computer. So its really only a 90 day warranty. I have never heard of that in my life. You can't call them about a warranty problem on your 1yr warranty item after 90 days without paying? Anybody who defends the apple warranty should be beaten. Its the worst in the business. For $350 they should fix it if you smashed it with a hammer. Scam scam scam.

You need to read other threads before you say things that aren't true. You don't know what you are talking about.

1. Florida has no law about AppleCare specifically.
2. Florida has never said AppleCare is a scam. (Saying things like that will get you sued by Apple for libel.)

Sony does a similar warranty, 90 days phone, 1 yr but only if you don't register your product. If you register its full 1yr phone and warranty, but if you put a different operating system on the computer than what it came with the warranty is VOID. I'm talking about putting XP pro on a system that came with XP home. Trust me. Bought a vaio, the dvd drive went bad in 1st week. I had put xp pro on it and they blamed that for the failure. I returned the computer needless to say.

dont take the $50 BS, your not asking for technical support your asking for a repair and that dose not cost money.

what is acctually wrong with the powerbook?

um laptop hard drives take less time to replace than a desktop. It take me less time to remove the screws holding in my laot hard drive than it take for me to get into my tower and then disconect evreythign from the hard drive and remove it.

Optical drives take a little longer in to remove but they should not take more than 20 min to replace.

Time wise working on a laptop comes out to be about the same as a desktop in repear work. The diffence is parts cost more

"Timelessblur" is right, what colour is the sky on your planet?

Here's a little excerpt from the relevant manuals

PMG5 to remove the optical drive:

"Preliminary Steps Before you begin, open the computer. "

and here's the one for the PowerBook 12"

"Preliminary Steps Before you begin, remove the following: • Battery • Memory door and memory card • AirPort Extreme Card, if installed • Keyboard• Top case • Hall effect sensor board and cable • Hard drive • Modem • DC-to-DC board • Heatsink with fan • Inner frame (with RJ11 board attached) • Logic board "

Maybe you have a PowerBook G3, where the optical drive is user removable and the hard drive takes 5 minutes.

In this thread we're talking about modern machines.
