This really sucks. I use the Mailbox app daily. I'll really miss how easily i could clean up my inbox its a wonderful app
As a personal recommendation, i’d say try myMail. Its a beautiful app for email. There’s push notifications with advanced settings, users' avatars and email filters.

Someone else just told me about Inbox and, you're right, it's pretty much the same but slicker which is great news for me.

Inbox has some functionality like mailbox, but for now, The latter is still superior. First and foremost, there is no unified mailbox with inbox. That right there is a deal breaker. There is no swipe to delete, no swipe to move mail to a folder, no ability to create new folders, no auto swipes. Inbox is similar but not nearly as good as mailbox for those interested in mailbox zero. The only app that comes close, real close in my opinion is SPARK. That is what I have been using since the mailbox announcement. Boxer Pro also is very similar. I have this installed as well.

The time is so right for one of these mail app clients to add the features of mailbox.

Plenty of other email clients still exist, which makes that reasoning not all that applicable.
Well I know but most of the other clients usually offer something over the stock Mail app. Mailbox at one point offered something over Mail.app but over time it had essentially become a carbon copy of the Mail app (or the other way around) as Apple continues to update Mail.app so it ended up nullifying most reasons to use Mailbox.
Mailbox does still offer some features like "snoozing" emails and creating contextual rules based on the sender of the email but it never seemed useful enough to pull people (myself included) away from the stock Mail app.

Clearly it's not even close to a carbon copy given what it was providing and how people were using it, just look at the post directly preceding your reply, for example.

Perhaps Dropbox shutting down Mailbox was a blessing in disguise. Reason being: Spark! What a absolutely splendid app. Beautiful interface, a lot of options for customizing, support for mange types of e-mail accounts. I can't wait for Readdle to make it available on iPad and OS X as well.

Anyone looking for an alternative should seriously check out Polymail - https://polymail.io . It's currently in closed Alpha but invites are being given out regularly (might be worth reaching out to the developers on Twitter). I've been using it for a couple of days and already it has surpassed Mailbox on a more than a few fronts (search/inline images etc). The developers are super responsive and regular updates are being pushed out. Haven't been this excited for a new app for a long time!

Is it just an app for Mac or is there an iPhone companion app?

Spark is so amazing. I just discovered the undo feature today. So important for us rash people

Yea, Mailbox had the same feature. Shake to undo. Many email clients adopted what Mailbox did first. Still not an email client out there that does all Mailbox did.
