Ouch! I did the same kind of drop to my 5s within 48 hours so I sympathize. My 5s was in a leather wallet case (like a book cover) and the plastic housing that holds the phone to the case cracked and chipped and took the force of the drop, so the phone was fine. The leather cover had also protected the screen. That's the kind of case I plan to get for my Plus when/if it ever arrives. I think these big screens are going to need a cover that's more like the kind Apple makes for the IPads than the usual traditional cell phone case. Good luck to you on the repair/replacement.

Well, if you're u can't get AppleCare now (I believe u have to bring it in for inspection to purchase the policy), you could always purchase squaretrade which works great too (you can get it repaired at Apple store and theyll reimburse the repair fee). All you have to do is purchase the policy and email them your proof of purchase and you're approved. They have coupons online you can use to drop the price down to around 80 bucks. There is a 70 dollar deductible per incident though but at this point you might as well protect your phone in case something similar happens again

Welll, this is a new record for me, I dropped my 6 Plus from waist-height to a gravel path,
it hit the floor on the corner of the official Apple leather case and transformed into this:

Can't find anyone selling replacements screens to fix it myself so looks like an expensive trip to the Apple store, anyone know how much it costs in £?

Apple cases are to prevent scratching. If you want to protect it you need a Tough Armor case.

Does the apple case even have a lip on it?

I would think basically any aftermarket TPU case with a lip would fare much better.

So the case is worthless

Interesting. This puts that other video drop test floating around in perspective. Those corners seem to be sensitive.

Sorry OP. Hope you get it repaired/replaced soon.

Every time I see threads like these right after a new release, I involuntary smile. I think I have a problem.

Since it's so soon after release you'll have to go to Apple for screen repair. You'll probably have to get a replacement. Also, get some type of insurance.

Bought my applecare two days ago just for such cases, even with apple's official case on my $870 (w/o tax) device, you never know how/where it will fall...
Also ordered the AirSkin from Spigen.

a sticky screen protector is going to be my first purchase. They act almost like safety glass.

Had the Moshi iVisor since day one on my iPhone 5 and have dropped it PLENTY of times. Always expected to pick it up and be greeted by the spider glass but each time it looks like the protector did its job holding it together.

I think this thread inspired me to put the order in for the screen protector, in advance of my o, 1-2 month wait for my 6 plus. :(

If you used anything resembling a modern credit card, they have damage protection for ~90 days. Make a claim and it'll be fixed for free.

Safety glass shatters into a million bits when it breaks.

Also, screen protectors don't stop breaks, they just hold the glass together when it does break.

Right, which it is designed to. Safety glass is called so because there are layers of plastic to hold it together. A piece of glass as big and unwieldy as automotive windshield glass would have broken into even smaller bits and all over the passengers at high speeds. Better to sacrifice the glass than the people inside.

The cheap thin, one-time use ones don't, also having decent cases (like how my iPhone 5 was in, in addition to the iVisor) helps. It's not the perfect solution but it's worked and saved me plenty of times when I knew with less protection it would have been worse.

Plus even if it would break, it would be nice to keep the all the glass pieces away from fleshy fingers. ;)

tell them theres a bug in ios8 that cause the screen to explode outwards :D will make them laugh... then you can pay for new screen :)

I can feel for the OP....within 2 hours on Friday I dropped my naked iPhone 6 off a desk onto the floor (slipped right out of my hand) and it hit the corner and cracked the glass.

Went to the Apple store and I can confirm it is $109 USD for replacing the screen (looks like £106.44 for an iPhone 6+).

Also, since none of the stores have the machines to do the repair yet, they will swap the whole phone.

NOTE however, with this swap, I'm not allowed to purchase Applecare for it (also assuming I couldn't get something like Squaretrade since it's "technically" not a new phone).

To me, seems the 6 is a bit more fragile if it falls than the 5. I dropped my naked 5 4-5 times and it never cracked.

As for those debating Applecare.....seems that IF you dropped it and the only thing wrong was the screen...then yes, the out of warranty repairs end up being cheaper on the 6 and about the same on the 6+ for 2 repairs. That's of course if nothing else broke and they CAN fix just the screen....otherwise AC+ is going to be a better deal.

I guess these cases don't do a whole hell of a lot. Why bother making your phone so damn big if it isn't even adding protection?

Not impressed with the durability of these things. The year is 2014. Shouldn't they be more durable than this? We keep hearing about how great Gorilla glass is, and I don't know if Apple is using that or something else.

I'm definitely worried about this. I dropped my iPhone 5 a few times (short distances) and lucked out for the most part with no damage. I'm definitely a bit worried about this, especially since I think I'm going to move up from the 6 to the 6+.

The OP is in the U.K., but purchasing it with an Amex card (or equivalent) would easily cover the screen or OOW replacement cost as it provides a 90-day accidental damage coverage. No AC+ needed for the early months while you're learning to adjust and handle the new device.

You can get AppleCare over the phone or using the online chat with Apple.

I know if you get Applecare over the phone, they send a diagnostic app to test the device. I wonder if that app can tell if there were any drops recorded and force you to go into the store?

Had an incident with mine, cracked the lower left corner glass (not the screen but the black part).

I have applecare thank God. I doubt they have replacement screens yet, so I'm expecting to get a new one, hopefully it is perfect like my original :( So pissed at myself.

Buying a case for sure. I didn't want to ruin the beauty of it, but I suggest everyone gets a case!

that would be amazing lol..i hightly doubt that though.

Take it to an Apple store and tell them you're angry that this happened to a brand new phone in a brand new official Apple case! I had an iPhone replaced for free this way a long time ago.
