I sharted when I saw this picture, thinking of the horrors that could befall me.
Sorry that it had to happen to you OP.

Always painful to see :(

So much for the folks who argued with me that that open bottom case is worth a damn.

I would take it in and show them you had the case and what happened. They may give you a discount or just a reduced rate.

Sorry that happened. :(

I, for one, am worried this generation of iPhones breaks farrrrr too easily. :(

With the curved screen, otterbox defender all the way.

I'd rather deal with the bulk rather than the time and effort to get a replacement or repair, but that's just me.

I still get applecare+ but the otterbox defender has saved my bacon way too many times.

Take it to the Apple Store ASAP. A friend used to be a manager at one of their stores, and he told me that when new models are just released, Apple usually directs their locations to replace damaged ones for a very limited time without charge. The phones get sent to their QA people presumably, for study on how/why phones from real world customers got damaged and how to improve on it.

Thanks for the sympathy guys, the saving grace is that work bought me the phone and pay for the contract so the repair cost is all I'm actually shelling out, not so sympathetic now I bet ;)

Called the store and they said £79 (could be plus VAT (20%) as I called the business team) and that they don't have screens so I would be getting a new phone for that cost.

I've read up and ordered a Spigen glass screen protector from eBay for £15.

Wow, after seeing this, think I will get AppleCare! Never got AppleCare for any of our iPhones 3, 4, and 5. But since this phone is 300.00, it's best to get one.

I'm so sorry OP. Seeing this hurts. :( I hope you can get a replacement or screen replacement.

Sorry for OP. That s*ck!

I don't see much benefit from AppleCare. I mean you pay $99 upfront (at least in Canada) then pay $79 if you break your phone..

$178 to replace the screen vs $129 fees from apple repair.. Even if you break it twice, it would be $99 + $79 + $79 = $257 versus $258 for 2 screen repair.

Of course if you break your phone beyond repair, it would be more expensive (329 replacement) but I have yet to see a completely dead iPhone. 98% of the problem I have seen come from the screen except if a car run over it.

Taking the chance and accepting paying the $129 fees for a screen if ever needed versus paying $99 just in case and ending up paying more or $1 less after 2 screen repairs don't look that interesting.

Do I miss something ?!

Some people keep their phones for longer than a year, having Applecare+ would cover repairs other than screen damage. My wife needed to have her speaker replaced in her iPhone 5 as it wasn't working. Applecare+ covered it.

In that case, my credit card would cover it since it add an extra year if anything break (which is not accidental of course) Really I only see the accidental part of the AppleCare as a benefit, but not at this price imo.

Worst case, how much would that speaker replacement cost? probably less than $99.

So the case is worthless

I don't think any case is likely to protect the screen of a device that falls face first onto gravel. I dropped my Kindle with a full leather case with cover onto cement getting out of my car. The cover opened and the Kindle hit the pavement face first and cracked.

OP, I'm sorry for your unfortunate experience.

Check your credit card if you bought it with a CC. A couple of mine have 90 days protection for accidental damage and theft

Honestly, I think that around this time I would just ebay the phone as you could probably get your money back since the demand is still so high. But luckily your company paid for the phone so you got that going :)

I didn't read the whole thread, just the OP.
Only get it repaired by Apple. My sister and step mother got their iPhone 5/c repaired from a third party vendor and the screens are CRAP! The feel, color accuracy, etc.

I had Applecare on my 5 and had the phone replaced 3 times, twice for camera defects (blob showing up in photos) and about a month ago for diminishing battery performance. They ran a diagnostic and said the battery was ok, but it was pretty terrible. No charge for any of them. Just called and purchased Applecare for my 6 about an hour ago. I know I'm going to drop this thing until I get used to the shape.

I know if you get Applecare over the phone, they send a diagnostic app to test the device. I wonder if that app can tell if there were any drops recorded and force you to go into the store?

I highly doubt that diagnostics will show a cracked glass.

Right, which it is designed to. Safety glass is called so because there are layers of plastic to hold it together. A piece of glass as big and unwieldy as automotive windshield glass would have broken into even smaller bits and all over the passengers at high speeds. Better to sacrifice the glass than the people inside.

The cheap thin, one-time use ones don't, also having decent cases (like how my iPhone 5 was in, in addition to the iVisor) helps. It's not the perfect solution but it's worked and saved me plenty of times when I knew with less protection it would have been worse.

Plus even if it would break, it would be nice to keep the all the glass pieces away from fleshy fingers. ;)

Something tells me you are confusing tempered glass and safety glass.

Also,

Check your credit cards most Amex/premier cards offer accidental protection for 60-90 days.

Apple has a Sudden Motion Sensor in their laptops that can detect when someone has dropped it. The same is used in the iPhone I believe.

So much for the official case offering protection.

Although with the curved sides and thinness (look at all these broken screen, 'I bent my phone' threads) my guess is anything less than an Otterbox isn't going to do much good.

Of course then your phone is the size of a small child so there is that...

The front of the case barely is higher then the screen itself, that's the problem. My iPhone 5 case, the case was noticebly higher then the screen when it dropped face first onto gravel, which is did, nothing happened
