And what about yours ? always waiting ? ;)

I imagine some people on this board must think I'm something of a tough customer, but I think I've been more than patient with Apple regarding my whole experience.

I still have no shipping data on the third attempt at delivering me a suitable G5 (i.e. one that doesn't overheat and/or have a constant audible tone), but I did hear that my 6800 card and screen are due to ship Tuesday (tomorrow).

That's something, I suppose.

Hey Grebo, what do you mean by constant audible noise?
I certainly expected it to run quieter than it is doing, but all i have is fan noise.
Did you have something different?

It is a perceptable pitch a C3 (middle C) and the first model I had did not have this noise at all. Apple Care worked with me on the phone and they thought it could be a noisy power supply. I can also feel a vibration if I touch the top of the front extruded handle. I didn't have that with the first G5 either.

I can hear it from down the hall - and I live on a fairly busy street in London, so you know that's an unacceptable level of noise.

Mind you, maybe it's because the fans weren't working properly that the first G5 kept overheating ;)

No, I just think that you are a concerned customer. When that kind of money is spent, then a customer should expect a machine that is in top working order. Has Apple done anything to compensate you for the problems encountered?

I've hinted strongly along the way (even to the point of having a saved order of things I'd like on the Apple Store site). But the agent I've had the most contact with has advised me to call back AFTER I've got all the pieces together, and 'we'll see what we can do for you'...

Not counting my chickens before they hatch - but I'm figuring they can probably be pretty generous with software, and that new iPod Photo looks mighty sexy... :)

It sounds as though you have a good agent on your side. Any idea yet when you will be getting a replacement? I'm pulling for you success. Please keep us posted.

6800 GT option

In case someone didn't notice, the 6800 GT CTO option was finally added yesterday.

I ordered my G5 2.5 with 512Mb RAM, 250Gb Drive, 9800 XT, and Bluetooth on 10/11. Expected ship date is 11/17.

I called them up to ask about switching the card to the 6800 GT and they claimed it would add 2-3 weeks to my ship date, so I'm going to stick with the 9800 XT.

I to am in a similar situation... I will also accept the 9800XT card over the 6800 GT due to the added delay in shipping. I was told an extra 3-5 weeks though... OH well... life will still be good.

Hi grebo,

I think Apple should compensate for trouble with its products, at least somewhere at the level You bared.

My G5 is due to be delivered to my local store right tomorrow, I'm crossing fingers that it will work fine, just like your second replacement (that'll be on Your desk soon, hopefully)!!

Don't mind to post a feedback about Your new iPod ;)

Cheers,

Andreas

Is it my imagination or has there just been a price cut on the 2.5???

if so, i'm kind of annoyed. I only received mine from my reseller last monday after ordering in august. Guess there's nothing i can do though. ?

EDIT: Ok, if i go straight to the apple store, the price is the usual 2200 pounds mark.

If i follow the link from the email apple sent me, it is 1879 - 300 pounds cheaper.

hmm...

6800 card Delay

My 6800 card was to ship on or before 10/29 but after no shipping on the 10/29 it changed to 12/08. So now I get to wait for about 6 more weeks. But this may be good since all the problems I have read. Maybe the bugs will be worked out.

Are you certain that the less expensive model isn't refurbished? Apple has had refurbished Dual 2.5GHz G5s on its Apple Store web site off and on for the last week or two, at $2,799 US (versus the $2,999 US for the new one).

I would call them up and ask them about it. I believe 12/08 is the estimated shipping date if you order a G5 2.5 today. At least this is the case if you order the 9800 XT card, could be different for the 6800. Maybe they accidentally changed your order, kicking you back to the end of the line.

OK,

it's a little bizarre, and an amateurish mistake by me:
The link from the email doesn't include VAT, and has no VAT in brackets. It only appears once you get right through to the order screen. No price change, just me being thick.
The normal page still displays a vat price.

Count my refurb 2.5 as one of those units, which I returned recently.

Downgrade complete

Hello all,

I received my DP2.0, two days after returning my DP2.5 due to thermal issues.

Just finished installing. (10.3.5) - no probs.
cpu temperature of this baby didn't go over 60.5c, therefore, no annoying fan rev-ups.

if you suspect that your machine is over heating, get it checked ASAP.
The G5 should not reach 65c in non-intence CPU tasks (safari, finder, expose, copy files, ...)

I switched to a DP2.0 because it would have taken my resseller weeks to swap my DOA.

good luck to you all.

In the 21st Century that doesn't make sense. They should be able to make a minor change with in change in shipping date.

Last Spreadsheet Update

Well I have spent a long time reviewing the posting history of each of the remaining open orders. I added a column recording the last time someone posted on this thread. If someone has not posted since October 1 I moved them to a separate tab in the spreadsheet called open orders - no status. I have found that

71 of the 89 open orders belong to people who have not posted a status update since October 1. Some have not posted since July.

I label only 18 orders as "still tracking" since we have recently heard from them. I can't justify trying to update this spreadsheet if we have so few posts anymore.

I think that this discussion thread has lost its desire to live anymore. Time between posts are many hours now. It was once the place to be while waiting for your G5 machine. Sharing the initial frustrations when the delays from Apple arrived, tracking shipments as they left the factory and the joy of photographing your carrier as they delivered the G5 to your door. It lasted 6000 plus posts and now its purpose is in my mind complete.

Kairy, received my DP2.0 also after I returned the DP2.5 due to defect. I'm curious why you had to install 10.3.5. Mine came with it installed already. What about your SuperDrive and Boot ROM Version installed? I have a DVR-117D (which is actually a DVR-108AA) and a ROM of 5.1.8f5.

All in all I am satisfied with the downgrade to a Rev B. A DP2.5 would have been cooler. Perhaps in the future I will patronize a Rev C G5 and pass this down to my wife. Until then enjoy your machines.

THANK YOU!

tHANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK - IT WAS FUN TO WATCH THE PROCESS OF CONCEPTION (FIRST ORDER) TO BIRTH (FIRST DELIVERY).

Cheers!

It is very interesting to compare the delivery of the 2.5 G5 to the process of conception to birth. With the length of the wait it's quite appropriate, luckily we don't have to wait nine months. :D

Omg! My 2.5 is on the motorway right now heading to the wrong address! Damn you Apple. 5 weeks wait and you can't even send it to the updated address I gave you. :(

Called TNT to try to divert it, they said they will 'try'.

Will keep you posted.

... but that's about to change. Within 24 hours of my agent escalating my case to his supervisor, I received not one, not two, but THREE shipment notifications! One for the 6800 card, one for the 30" monitor and lastly, one for the THIRD (and hopefully final) G5 to replace the current replacement of the first.

Have arranged to work from home to receive the shipments - except the G5 might straggle until Monday (damn!). Will keep you posted.

My G5 arrived :) :) :)

Hey grebo,

I'm on a free day now to setup my new G5, it came wednesday :D

Right now, I've been fooling around with it a little, it's a great computer, everything just runs so smooooooooooooth! Hell, I dind't even managed to bring it to it's limits yet

Only the display shows barely seeable shadows after closing a window, but I'm not yet sure if I'll omplain, perhaps it was me been too tired

Anyway, it's great, it's cool, it's worth waiting, keep Your head up mate ;)

cheers,

Andreas

P.S.: I'm in love with Apple again :p

congrats King Crimson and Grebo! I saw the wait on the Apple Store for the 2.5 has been lowered to 2-3 weeks, so IBM is actually scaling up their production. Kudos for them.

This quarter will be rather high on income and net profit I think, considering the shipping of new ibooks, new imacs, and increased production of powermacs, and don't forget, the new iPods.

Good luck with your machines! Mine is running damn fine, although I have a tiiiiny little scratch on my case at the edge, barely noticable though, but I think it was the maid, tsss
