After the DOA 2.5, I rolled back and picked up a Rev. B 2.0Ghz G5. Got here yesterday. Here it is with my TiBook. Machine has been nothing but quiet and no Thermal Problems.
I did have a similar problem which I wrote about my a few months back in this exact thread regarding a defective Airport card installation and their being unable to fix the problem due to the unrecognizable serial number.
Aside from that everything should have been running great. But a defective product is still a defective product. I connected the computer with a purchase of an Apple Express on top of my existing Airport Extreme Base Station - just for the defective G5. And what happens if more problems arise soon. They will not be able to attend to it since they can't even manage to have my serial number input in their system to be recognized.
One Specialist was willing to replace the product, but said he couldn't do it because he needed a recognizable serial number to start with before he can attend to me.
After two months of phone support with three supposedly Apple Specialists, they were unable to fix the problem.
So I contact my credit card company to dispute the charges. A few weeks later, an Apple customer support named Sharon Archer directly emailed me giving me an RMA to return the product within 7 days or they would charge me. Also, the email further stated if I changed my mind and decided to keep the product. Duh! I was complaining about the product for two months and then after all this lost hours and money from spending it with their phone support I would suddenly want to keep the product. Hmm. Plus, after two months of aggravation they email to say I am given 7 days to send it back to them. The expense is all mine and they require a shipment with tracking and insurance for the full value.
I emailed back to state that I would pay for the charges only if they replace the product. No response from her. After one week, I emailed once again. No response at all to date. That's customer support to you.
I returned the product after more than two months of use - picture editing, dvd burning, Increase contribution 24 hours a day non-stop, travelling with the computer from SF to LA and back. It's had its good use and I don't mind parting with it. I get my full money back and they get a used machine.
I would happily kept it if they fixed it within the months I was waiting for their support. Nada.
With my credit clear I order a replacement PowerMac DP2.0 as it was ready to ship in three days with BTO - same as my previous 2.5 minus the processor and liquid cooling, of course.
I admit a faster computer is psychologically more enticing and more productive in my field of editing, but I can't afford to wait 3-5 weeks and have no computer when they demand the product back within 7 days care of my own expense.
However I did just receive the 2.0 and it works great. Extended Hardware testing reported everything passed. I must say the unit is quieter than the whistling fans of the 2.5 that come on every now and then. But I knew that already because when I brought the 2.5 to LA to work alongside two more G5s of DP1.8 and DP2.0, they were surprised to hear my machine whistling every now and then as I was surprised, too.
I don't know what makes the 2.5 whistle like that. It couldn't have been the liquid cooling because that didn't sound like it had any moving parts aside from the liquid. Anyway, my 2.0 is fine.
From my real world experience I still find the DP2.5 slow for my needs - Final Cut, AE6.5, Avid Xpress Pro apps. Since I only received the 2.0 a few days ago, I hadn't had much time to make it go thru the usual work I did with a 2.5. It will obviously be much slower, but what can I do. Maybe in the future a DP3.0 is what I can aim for again now that I can afford to wait.
I'm not complaining nor dissing any machine. I'm happy for customers to have received a perfect 2.5. I'm also happy for customers to have received their replacement 2.5. I wish mine could have been resolved like that, but every case differs. I'm happy with the 2.0 and with the USD600 savings I got from the difference in ADC pricing, I can't complain.
Good luck and I hope others get their PowerMacs soon. It's a great machine, when it works.
P.S. - The FireWire transfer of user prefs, data and applications took only 30 minutes from the 2.5 to 2.0 using the FW800. That was around 60 gigs of stuff in my OS drive. The only failed transfer reported was Avid Xpress Pro, which I had to reinstall again. That was pretty convenient and I'm glad Apple created a transfer utility like that. I just hope in the future you can select the stuff to be transferred - not just an all or nothing option.
