That's a sweet looking set up you've got there. In fact, I'd say it's one of the nicest I've seen.

How do you like the Lacie Porsche 160GB Firewire Drive?

It's has been great. I run Carbon Copy Cloner to make bootable backups of my harddrive. Owned it for almost 8 months now. It's quiet and I have not had a problem with it. Thanks for the compliment on the setup. :)

Couple More Office Shots

Here are a couple more office shots of the new G5 setup. I figured some of our European friends might like or hate :) my Arsenal Football Print.

Battery Icon????

Quick question. I used the profile transfer utility on the new G5 from my old Powerbook and it has put the battery status window up on the top status bar. For the life of me I can't figure out how to get rid of it. I go to Energy Saver in System Preferences and there is no option to remove it since the G5 doesn't have a battery. Any thoughts?

Cmd-Drag it out of the menu bar. You can also use Cmd-Drag to re-order Apple (but not most 3rd party) menulings.

Wow, I made that difficult. Thanks!

I don't mind seeing the print at all. You have a very nice setup. Nice pictures. That is an awesome looking wallpaper. Where was it acquired?

Replacement for DOA G5 received - got a good one this time.

After posting earlier about the CTO dual 2.5Ghz with 6800 Ultra I received earlier this month that was DOA (no boot up), I have happier news to report :)

Received my replacement on 29th October; 2 days shipping time and I can report that this one is solid as a rock, and I put an extra gig of Crucial RAM in for good measure to go to 2Gb.

Even so I bought Applecare retrospectively, though Apple mistakenly sent me an iBook copy of the APP.

Only thing I did notice when adding the RAM : the main black plastic bus plug which comes out from near the processors and clips to the logic board was partially detached and needed clipping down firmly. There's not much slack in this lead and I put this down to transit movement. I recommend anyone receiving one to just open the case and quickly check for this.

The machine is MUCH quieter than my Sawtooth G4, a quiet woosh generally, fans spin up as and when required, not too much of a distraction.

Fast - you betcha - general usage is silky smooth. The firewire setup assistant transfers all your stuff flawlessly, though only from the boot disk on your old Mac it seems.

I can't type accurately on the new keyboard for toffee - action is softer than the previous Apple Pro keyboard.

A few graphical glitches occasionally - I get the feeling the 6800 Ultra drivers are less than optimised - perhaps 10.3.6 will fix this.

The innards - well they are a joy to look at. I bought a copy of GigaHz magazine this month which reviewed a high-end £4000 PC - the inside was the usual ugly rats-nest of thrown together components and poorly routed cabling - really the G5 is a thing of beauty and not so overpriced I feel.

For everyone waiting - it's worth the wait !

London Apple Store and 2.5Ghz G5

Hey all, been reading this thread for a good 2 or 3 months now, this is my first post! :)

Does anyone know if the Apple Store opening in London will do the Student Discount? I figure by its opening date il have enough cash to get the G5 from the store with the 23" screen. I wanted to see the screen setup and working (to make sure about dead pixels and no 'purple or pink' haze) before i hand over my hard-earned cash and leave the store!

Thanks for a great read over the last few months, its certainly been a delight reading about ppl's experiences (eg the photo's of FedEx guys!!)

I did have a similar problem which I wrote about my a few months back in this exact thread regarding a defective Airport card installation and their being unable to fix the problem due to the unrecognizable serial number.

Aside from that everything should have been running great. But a defective product is still a defective product. I connected the computer with a purchase of an Apple Express on top of my existing Airport Extreme Base Station - just for the defective G5. And what happens if more problems arise soon. They will not be able to attend to it since they can't even manage to have my serial number input in their system to be recognized.

One Specialist was willing to replace the product, but said he couldn't do it because he needed a recognizable serial number to start with before he can attend to me.

After two months of phone support with three supposedly Apple Specialists, they were unable to fix the problem.

So I contact my credit card company to dispute the charges. A few weeks later, an Apple customer support named Sharon Archer directly emailed me giving me an RMA to return the product within 7 days or they would charge me. Also, the email further stated if I changed my mind and decided to keep the product. Duh! I was complaining about the product for two months and then after all this lost hours and money from spending it with their phone support I would suddenly want to keep the product. Hmm. Plus, after two months of aggravation they email to say I am given 7 days to send it back to them. The expense is all mine and they require a shipment with tracking and insurance for the full value.

I emailed back to state that I would pay for the charges only if they replace the product. No response from her. After one week, I emailed once again. No response at all to date. That's customer support to you.

I returned the product after more than two months of use - picture editing, dvd burning, Increase contribution 24 hours a day non-stop, travelling with the computer from SF to LA and back. It's had its good use and I don't mind parting with it. I get my full money back and they get a used machine.

I would happily kept it if they fixed it within the months I was waiting for their support. Nada.

With my credit clear I order a replacement PowerMac DP2.0 as it was ready to ship in three days with BTO - same as my previous 2.5 minus the processor and liquid cooling, of course.

I admit a faster computer is psychologically more enticing and more productive in my field of editing, but I can't afford to wait 3-5 weeks and have no computer when they demand the product back within 7 days care of my own expense.

However I did just receive the 2.0 and it works great. Extended Hardware testing reported everything passed. I must say the unit is quieter than the whistling fans of the 2.5 that come on every now and then. But I knew that already because when I brought the 2.5 to LA to work alongside two more G5s of DP1.8 and DP2.0, they were surprised to hear my machine whistling every now and then as I was surprised, too.

I don't know what makes the 2.5 whistle like that. It couldn't have been the liquid cooling because that didn't sound like it had any moving parts aside from the liquid. Anyway, my 2.0 is fine.

From my real world experience I still find the DP2.5 slow for my needs - Final Cut, AE6.5, Avid Xpress Pro apps. Since I only received the 2.0 a few days ago, I hadn't had much time to make it go thru the usual work I did with a 2.5. It will obviously be much slower, but what can I do. Maybe in the future a DP3.0 is what I can aim for again now that I can afford to wait.

I'm not complaining nor dissing any machine. I'm happy for customers to have received a perfect 2.5. I'm also happy for customers to have received their replacement 2.5. I wish mine could have been resolved like that, but every case differs. I'm happy with the 2.0 and with the USD600 savings I got from the difference in ADC pricing, I can't complain.

Good luck and I hope others get their PowerMacs soon. It's a great machine, when it works.

P.S. - The FireWire transfer of user prefs, data and applications took only 30 minutes from the 2.5 to 2.0 using the FW800. That was around 60 gigs of stuff in my OS drive. The only failed transfer reported was Avid Xpress Pro, which I had to reinstall again. That was pretty convenient and I'm glad Apple created a transfer utility like that. I just hope in the future you can select the stuff to be transferred - not just an all or nothing option.

G5 DP 2.5 Thermal issues

hello all,

It's been 2 weeks since I got the DP 2.5.

There is certaintly a heat issue with this model.

My machine was almost always near 80c degrees. (CPU temp)

The fans would rev up, even when I wasn't doing anything complex.

I decided to downgrade to a DP 2.0 and go with 2GB ram instead.

To my surprise, my reseller didn't even try to convince me to stay with the 2.5.

(sounded like I wasn't the only one complaining)

A tech support guy told me that this machine runs from 50c degrees to 90c degrees. So that means that 80c degrees is OK, but I'm afraid that in the long run, my machine will begin to crash. (probably a day following the end of the warranty period)

I get my new DP 2.0 in 2 days. :D

good luck to you all.

I'll check in to this thread from time to time to see what I'm missing ;)

I don't know what the actual "average" temp on these is, but I run pretty consistently between 63c and 70c.

Good luck with the dual 2.

it is more than possible that I received a DOA.

still, instead of being a lab rat, I decided to go with the 2.0 and start production. (after waiting for so long)

I'll wait the next round or two, before diving into a liquid cooled adventure.

thanks and keep cooool

Just another data point (F9, F10 and F11...cool)

56.4 C CPU A
54.2 C CPU B

It has been running ALL day monitoring football and a background with active marine aquarium (not that that really heats things up - but non the less it has not been idol.

Also has anyone played with the F9, F10 and F11 keys with 10.3.5? I was trying to see if I could get a scrren shot and those keys are wicked cool. Open up several windows and try them out... where can one find out seekirts like this?

Irie

PS - how do you take a screen shot (and a Window only shot) picture?

I was at my local Apple Store today. They have their first 2.5 on display. It has 3 GB of RAM. I put my ear up to the front of the machine, it sounded quieter than my G4. The air coming out the back was just a litter warmer than my G4. A very impressive sight.

Just to chime in, I get temps averaging 49-55 C during light use. Temps only go up to 75-80 during CPU intensive tasks. No Thermal Runaway or even a Kernel panick in 2 months.

QUOTE]

I hope everyone here who got a 2.5 has a great machine for years to come. I got nervous about all the heat issues and after returning my first DOA 2.5 and waiting a couple months I decided to roll back to the 2.0 Rev. B that has had some more time under its belt. I do think IBM and Apple have Overclocked the 2.5 and the Thermal issues are going to be persistant. I have two other friends here locally who have already had their 2.5's in for lengthy repairs. I'm sure 90% of them will be fine in the long run. It seems they have definitely hit the wall for how to air cool these processors and the liquid cooling may not be doing all that it is supposed to. My machine runs around 70.1F, even after being on the last 24 hours. It has plenty of speed for what I do and runs Garageband quite well with my Fender and up to 7 seperate tracks to play on.

Well, those aren't exactly secrets, it's called Expose. ;) It's a pretty well-documented feature in Panther, but I understand if a new user may not have known about them. :)

Apple-Shift-3 will take a screenshot of your entire screen. If you want just a portion of the screen to be captured, use Apple-Shift-4 and you can use a cursor to select your capture-area. Apple-Shift-4-Space gives you a camera icon, etc. - there are may little hotkeys like this.

That is a very wise precaution. Mind you, 'room temperature' will take on a whole new definition once you start running your new furnace, er I mean computer!

GREAT NEWS!!!!

GLad to hear you got your system... I also ordered it on October 13th... so now i feel like there is hope for me.

Did you order it online or over the phone.

I ordered a DP 2.5 CTO with 160GB HD, 9800XT video, 512MB RAM...

CONGRATS !!!

I was as worried as you are now, these forums don't help for those matters :)

Mine is peeerrfect, 1 stuck pixel (green) somewhere in my screen, but I only notice it when running pixelcheck, I don't notice it on other occasions.

I calibrated my monitor (everybody should do that), no pink at all.

It's great! See pics at http://mac.goaly.net

Im still waiting for a replacement display. My G5 and 23" display (aluminium) arrived a long time ago, back in September. The display was very PINK out of the box, after some calibration is was OK. Not prefect but OK. After using it for a while I noticed a yellow patch on the left hand side and also at the top right. It got worse over time. The display also had bad ghosting problems. In general the quality was fairly poor. For a game user it would probably be ok but for a full time designer it is not good enough.

I called Apple ( i have AppleCare ) and they said they will take it away and fix it. They also sent me a display on load until the repair is done. ( this all took a couple of weeks to sort out !, they first lost my case number and then forgot to arrange a loan display )

Anyway, the loan display arrives. But it does they forget to send the power pack for the display. It took over 3 weeks to send the correct power pack. At first they sent adapters then normal power cables until they realised what power pack i needed.

If they send a loan display out they should send all the parts you need to get it to work.

ok. So they take my faulty display away for repair. It comes back 2 days later. They say they can not find any fault !!!! The description of the fault they were looking for was not even the same as i gave them. The fault is so obvious, either they are incompetent or the level of quality control is so low.

This is now about 5 or 6 weeks from initially calling Apple about the faulty display.

Now they say they will send a new display out to me. ( why did they just not do this in the first place )

Basically i am pi**ed off. I paid extra money for Apple Care to solve any problems like this. The level of service form Apple has been laughable. It has cost me considerable time in phone calls and waiting for delivery after deliver of incorrect adapters and cable etc..

They even sent me 3! empty boxes at one point.

Anyway, a new display is on its way ( i hope ) but i am worried i will go through all the same problems again. I had no dead pixels on the faulty display, i hope i don't get any on the new display. I personally think ONE dead pixels is not acceptable, why should it be.

My advice. DO not buy the 23: display from Apple. Wait a while until they can manufacture them without faults.
