They aren't all going to be delayed until the end of September, but did anyone really believe that EVERY pre-order was going to ship on 8/29? Some of them will ship starting today I'm sure, just not anywhere near all of them. I think it's rather unrealistic for anyone to believe that Apple would ship over 50,000 systems in one day.

Apple said they would start shipping duals on 8/29, just as they said the 1.6 & 1.8s would start shipping on 8/18. As we all saw, most stores didn't actually start getting the singles in stock for another week after that and the same will hold true with the duals. I just can't believe that so many people are this surprised considering what just happened with the single processor models last week. Considering how long it's taken to finally have G5s available after talking about them seemingly for years, another week or two certainly isn't going to kill anyone. For anyone willing to cancel their order over such a trivial delay, you REALLY need to get a life. Frankly I doubt most of the people doing most of the complaining ever actually placed a real order anyway...

The only person who can qualify the delay as "trivial" is a person who didn't actually place a "real" order...

The problem is again as I had mentioned before is that Steve-o stood up in front of the world and promised this ... there is a press release on the Apple webiste apple.com/pr dated the 18 August "we're right on track to deliver the dual 2.0 GHz Power Mac G5 later this month." Without all of that and other things people's expectations would have not have been set and there wouldn't be all these posts... we have lives we Apple to perform on the contract that was created when we placed our orders. There is pleanty Apple could do ... the first is shipping the computers... People who placed orders are surprised because of what Steve-o said and the press release Apple posted itself on it's own official website....you need to get a clue...

interesting. my shipping has moved even further. A 6/23 order due to ship today was changed to 9/26 this morning and now it's at 9/29

why do i feel like I'll end up seeing this machine in October?

you may call me a forever optimist...but here is what i think shipping schedule will be like...

they will be shipping standard dual config today/tommorow and along sept the built to order configs will ship has they become ready....

maybe custom configs are assembled in another facilitie ? anyone know ??

I, for one, have been waiting two months since I placed my order and was highly anticipating a shipping date today in order to receive my g5 by the time school starts. That may seem 'trivial' to you, but I am obligated to ship off my tibook this afternoon as it was sold on eBay...I'm not the only one I know that will be without a computer for a while should the 9/26 date be true.

I'm in the same situation, I agreed to sell my G4 to my boss who is buying it for his son to use at college. Since my ship date was still 8/29 as of yesterday, I told him I could get him my G4 by next weekend. Now I have to go buy a big firewire hard drive to use with my powerbook to move all my stuff off the g4.

And now I'm convinced that Apple's order tracking system is completely useless, if my G5 is close enough that they felt 8/29 was still possible I'd expect any last minute delays to push shipment back only a couple days at most. That may happen but right now I feel outright lied to. I can understand delays but less than 24 hours notice? No pre-ordering for me ever from now on!

CTO could be the problem...

FWIW, CTO could be the reason that some of these orders are being pushed back...

WAY back when, I ordered my TiBook 500 as a CTO kit when Steve was still on stage. All I added was an airport card, but that caused it's ship date to slide, like these G5's, to way after the first batch of stock PB's were already out the door. Luckily, I found a 500 at my local CompUSA. I was able to cancel my order (it wasn't in "production" yet) and bought it from them.

Ever since then, I've never pre-ordered anything that wasn't a stock config. Seems CTO's need a "personal" touch while the stocks models just roll off the line without any hold up.

I know this doesn't help those who got their dates bumped, but may provide a little insight.

I added a 9800 and asked if this would delay my order. I was told that only HDD was likely to do so as the card was easy to change on the production line.

No idea if that was a sop to get the order or not (but I guess I'll find out if others ship and mine doesn't!)

Well, I called up, asked to cancel, and they knocked $150 off my order!

Some people are getting offered less, but I thought it was enough of a gesture to keep me in line. :D

They knocked $150 off mine too.

This is about what one months worth of depreciation is worth, so it's just fair.

What's not fair is giving no warning.
People are making plans and structuring their work-lives based on the vapor-ship-dates.

That's not good for Apple's brand.

My Dell's always shipped on or before time...but they are the best at that...

Have you ever ordered a Dell with a brand new architecture, chip, case, etc.? Dell usually doesn't do anything radical - a slightly faster chip, a bigger hard disk, etc. - their machines always change gradually so there is no pent up demand. When people want a new PC, they just pick what's available - they don't wait for months and months for the next best thing.

I'm sure in a month or so, there will be few or no delays in the G5 line too.

What rebates?

Attn: GENIE and mark_wilken

First thing in the morning I called up service support concerning compensation for the extended shipping delay and I was told they are not authorized to offer rebates to customers concerning this matter. Under what circumstances did they decide to offer you this rebate? Are you in a different country? Did you order Educational or regular, etc? Thanks

Yeah, I didn't ask for a rebate. I read on here that they were offering discounts for some people who threatened to cancel, so I called up. I and the rep had the following conversation:

me: "I'd like to cancel my order."

him: "Why?"

me: "I don't want to wait another month."

him: "Is there anything we can do for you on price to keep your order?"

me: "Price? What do you mean?"

him: "Well, if we reduced the price, would you keep your order open?"

me: "If it were a substantial amount of money, maybe."

him: "I'm not sure it would be 'substantial,' but we might be able to do something. What would it take to keep your order?"

me: "I don't know, what can you do for me? I could imagine that saving some money might make a difference."

him: "Let me check."

<five minutes on hold.>

him: "Would $150 off make a difference in keeping your order open?"

me: "Hmm... Sure, I'll keep the order open."

Worth noting that it's possible you'll do this and they'll say "OK, it's cancelled!" :D

You get more with sugar. :)

I would just very nicely say, hey- one month's depreciation on a computer this expensive is worth $150.

So, what can you do to keep my order?

If you say "nothing", I'll have to just wait for revision B in January.

if you can't give me the $$ off, give me it in free software, or free [you name it], or GUARANTEE me free Panther.

I'm sure in a month or so, there will be few or no delays in the G5 line too.

But there will be a forum full of Mac users waiting for the next best thing...

Hmm a 250Gig iPod? I'll take one! I needed more storage anyway, I picked up a Maxtor 250G 7200rpm 8M cache firewire from compusa for 350. I think somebody screwed up, they were selling the 7200rpm drive at the same price as the 5400rpm. Works great so far.

rebates

No discount. They said they would be more than happy to cancel my dual order for me. Bastards. I don't how you guys pulled off the $150 discount.

Duals showing 10-15 bus. days in US Apple Store

I don't know how you guys will like this:

Many people who had their orders delayed got a notice that it would ship within 10-15 business days.

If you put in an order for a dual-2.0GHz G5, non-BTO configuration, you are given 10-15 business days estimated shipping time. If you try to go for a BTO configuration (in my case, adding a Radeon 9800), it's still 10-15 business days.

Let's hope the pre-orders go out before the newly-placed orders!

Mine said 3-4 weeks. I sent an email asking if there's any changes I can make to speed up the ship date. If compusa gets a stock dual before mine ships, I'm definitely going to cancel my bto.
