It's just like Apple to make mass-market bleeding edge technologies while also being criticized for late adoption of other technologies.

Thunderbolt, USB3, SCSI, whatever.

Dual lens capability (sensor) layered on a large and rich developer and user community is value added. How much, we will see. But now, we will indeed see.

I cite Mac II si, since we are chatting old school.

NDI samples at WWDC 2016??

Why so much emphasis on 3D photos? How would you even view them?

I'm more interested in capturing image data from both sensors and combining them into one regular still photo.

Computational photography is the real benefit here.

Everyone likes a better camera. But don't think doing anything in 3d will catch on. 3d annoys customers more than anything. 3d has never been like the 3d we see the world in. IT's a fake 3d. And it brings annoying visual artifacts and distortions with it. Maybe some day they will clean up all that, but until that happens, 3d isn't going to turn anyone on.

Welcome to LG's 2012 with their 3D Dual Camera setup the first phone ever to feature dual cameras on the phone. Yes they could individually be used as well.

Just like in a race, some run so fast(use all energy at first second) and failed to reach the line.

After seeing the image quality, lowlight performance, and optical zoom capabilities of a dual lens system, I'll be very disappointed if the iPhone 7 doesn't have it. This needs to be a key feature for the 7, and not just a "7 Plus Pro" (if people are actually believing that). Otherwise, what else will the 7 bring new to the table?

I'm most likely hanging onto my 6 if they only put it on their phablet model (if it is the highlight of the new iPhone, that is). That would be the longest I'd go without an upgrade since I finally jumped on the iPhone bandwagon with the 3GS.

At least I'd be saving money since the subsidy isn't hid in the phone bill anymore, I guess.

I agree and disagree. Using two cameras to take stereo pairs is (as Donald Trump would say) BORING.

Computational photography will allow you to take pictures that look as though they were taken with a much better camera. That's a great benefit.

But the depth mapping that supports the computational photography has other exciting uses, as described in the article above. Think computational holography.

stock-vector-plug-wire-socket-292009550.jpg Duals lens looks very familiar.....

as I reading into the benefits of TRL...it appears the main advantage is mechanical simplicity...and long exposure photographs.

One of the disadvantage that i read about is: not being able to preview the depth of field.

Meh...whatever. IF this camera can't take good pictures at night due to lack of low lighting......I don't see any difference from current model 6s plus. Well...maybe more sharper in daylight....

My iPhone is my main travel camera, so I'm very excited about any camera improvements. This dual camera tech sounds pretty sweet. Bring it.

Killer apps - wrong choice of wording for the iPhone,
That's for sure.

Killer Apps? Really Apple?

Those days are long gone. Beset with a plethora of bugs iOS would quite likely be too challenged to run a Killer App even if their was one. The App Store is already flush with excellent apps.

Bedides many of us would be thrilled if Apple would simply fix the foibles baked into iOS and Safari as implemented in iOS.

A technology as potentially-revolutionary as the optical-zooming smartphone cameras deserves to be in the hands of as many people as possible. This feature should not be an exclusive one.

+1 .... I truly hope their ability to continue innovating isn't slowing down.

The first mobile phone with a 3D camera was available in 2007! It is almost 2017!

Of course Samsung stole the idea from Apple in 2007! /s
Look at the image in the OP. You will notice that they lenses are put right next to each other, in stark contrast to those cameras which put the lenses at least an inch apart from each other. Why is this important? Because you need to have some distance between the two cameras if you want to capture stereoscopic images, which is what traditional "3D cameras" do. This is completely different. One camera is for wide angle shots, the other is for telephoto. They can also combine the data from these cameras to produce better overall images.

How can Apple be an "industry leader" in dual camera phones when they haven't released one yet?

Also, for all you people comparing it to previous 3D phones. This is not what the 2 cameras are about.

Blah blah. And how many 3D cam phones did they bring out since then?
They will wait until Apple does it the right way and then copy it.

I believe it will "catch on", in early stages after the leaks on the 7 rumours and that patent. But particularly "catching on" after Apple use it in a SmartPhone. Huawei's market research knows no bounds, I wonder if they use MacRumors?

Who the **** cares?

Did Samsung invent stereography too?

Can't Apple make things that somebody else invented?
