I don't understand why getting a Rev. A of a dual-core Power Mac G5 means I'd be on "crack." Seriously now... I am highly considering getting one when they are announced, so why not? If I have any problems with it, then I get it repaired by Apple under warranty. There's no reason why you should have to wait for a Rev. B which would be months after...

Just my 2 cents.

Seriously, yes, you are correct about the warranty and such. Some people prefer to play it safe though and avoid any hassles like that, whether Apple takes care of it or not - it's more of a frustration and inconvenience thing I think...

Totally agree with that. I'm hoping Apple steals Vista's thunder by releasing Leopard just before Vista (i.e. MS's version of Tiger) comes out. Oh, and Apple will make Leopard run natively on PCs as well, putting even more pressure on MS and their little Vista OS. ;)
If Leopard is coming out in January 2007, then Apple needs to release a developer preview at the MWSF in January. Seems too soon. People are still moving to Tiger.

There's gonna be two big announcements in 2006: the release of the first Intel Macs and a Leopard preview. I don't see both announcements happening at the same event, so:

MWSF 2007: Intel mac release
WWDC: Leopard preview

or

MWSF: Leopard preview
WWDC: Intel release

I'm going with the first option. Of course, there is the third option of one of these releases coming at some other random event in the Spring, but I doubt it. These releases will be HUGE. And hence, they'll require the biggest stages, i.e. the MWSF and WWDC.

Makes sense, I see what you're saying. I was just going off what Jobs said at WWDC, where I believe he cited a late '06/early '07 release of Leopard. Keep in mind also that even if Leopard is released in January 2007, it will be a longer gap than there was between Panther and Tiger, and Apple still pulled that off, so it isn't out of the realm of possibility.

Also, there's nothing saying Apple couldn't profile both at one event - it would just be very busy, that's all. ;) But hey, if Leopard is going to run natively on PCs to officially compete directly with Windows, it might make sense! Why else would Steve even mention it in the first place at WWDC amidst all the Intel announcements? ;)

Thank you ~Shard~. It certainly does make sense for Steve to talk about Intel and Leopard at MWSF '06.

It would make for a busy Keynote, as Jobs would have to profile iLife '06, and no doubt talk about the latest iPod stuff in addition, but I could still see it happening.

Just over 3 months away I guess, isn't it? How times flies!

Back to G5 PM Dual Core...

I've drawn my line in the sand - I will buy my PowerMac tomorrow after (any possible) announcement. Or maybe Wednesday, or by Thursday evening.....

Seriously, I've waited through that horrible last Tuesday, and I will stop the madness and buy by Thursday so long as there aren't any announcements.

I think... :D

Which one are u planning to buy? I'm in the same situation as u, I am ready to buy the 2.3Ghz with 2Gb Ram and the ATI x850 machine for work but just want to wait for some sort of announcement cos I have my powerbook to use in the mean time... I really am not looking forward to buying a computer and 1 week later something with better graphics and cpu comes out... I can still hold out another week or two depends on how well I do at my ps2 game but seriously tho i'd like to buy the dual core g5s... dual 2.3 sounds great but can't justify it in light of new graphic card and cpu updates in the pipeline...

If you're that close, I'd wait until the www.ati.com clock expires on October 5, when they release their new graphics cards. Then if there is no PCI Express card that is Mac & PC compatible, which may be the last roadblock to announcing a 970MP PowerMac, then buy whatever is available and don't look back.

I'm not like that. I don't like holding back because I am "scared" of any problems I may run into. If I run into any problems, I'll be sure to have AppleCare to back me up. There's no reason why you should have to wait and see if Apple screws up with a new product. I say take the plunge and have fun with your new computer!

That's definitely one way to look at it! I can't say I'd be adverse to this approach either, but I've never been in a position to try it out. ;) Yes, there can be detriments to being an early adopter, but also many, many benefits!

Hi gang,

I'm new here, but always checked things out. I bought one of the first G5s, a 1.6 ghz, when they shipped 2 years ago (I wanted a dualie, but it wasn't coming out until Nov. '03 and I needed a computer immediately). The only problem I had was the DVD burner wouldn't eject, so they fixed it. Pain in the neck, but there were two apple stores within 15 miles of me (now 3), so no big deal.

I am DYING for a new Power Mac, and I'm going to wait until the end of next week or so to see if some dual dual-cores come out. But I'm gonna buy from someone with a 30 day return policy. That will help me out (I almost got burned 5.5 years ago with a non-FireWire PowerBook, but outpost.com took it back and I got the new one).

I cut native HDV (hi def video) and need more speed. Here's to hoping something happens.

You might as well pull the trigger on that Dell because nothing Apple is going to offer for the next few years is gonna give you a deal like that.

You might want to buy the LCD seaprately so you can use Dell's coupons on it and get a few hundred off. I think it costs less when you buy it separately anyway.

Patience! Good things come to those who wait. :) Seriously, though... Apple > Dell

So just be patient.

If you're going to buy a PC, don't buy a crappy pre-built Dell. Just go to www.newegg.com and built your own PC that's alot faster than Dell's while saving quite a lot of money.

Well I decided not to go for the Dell...not because I'm really expecting Apple to give me something a much better deal, but just because I decided to restrain myself from buying at all. So the credit card gets to stay in the wallet.
Maybe I'll be able to wait until the intel macs come out. By then the latest conroe PCs and PM's should compare much more favorable...hopefully....

Xephian, as for building my own, Dell can actually be cheaper in many cases. They've really done a good job driving prices down. I built all my PC's up to now but it's harder to justify the time now that I'm working all the time. I just wish they offer A64's...

P4 840: $540
XP Pro: $140
Intel 945P mobo: $160
2GB (512x4) RAM: $150
Geforce 6800: $210
Audigy 2: $70
Hitachi 500gb SATA drive: $330
Antec case w/450watt PSU: $110
16x DVD burner: $40
USB keyboard/mouse: $20
Media reader: $20
Office 2003 SBE: $235

That's over $2000 already and that's without the monitor, shipping, a 3 year warranty on everything and my time to assemble everything. Makes going pre-built look much better....

I hope u don't use adobe products or any other pro applications as it sure will take the 3rd party developers at least 6 month to recompile and optimize their risc products for the intel processor... Sure intel processor runs fast with osx but what about photoshop/illustrator so on and so on??? until adobe and the rest of them optimizes their products for the intel mac I am gonna wait for the G5 to come out and use it as I forsee at least 1-2 years before all major programs are done properly... Remember the wait for these programs when apple switched from os9 to osx??? it took apple to go from 10.0 to 10.2 before anyone did anything... But i guess it depends on what you want to do with ur computer... I doubt games will be faster too since most games for PC are based on the direct x9 api and since apple uses open gl the games need to be optimized for that also... intel might not be all the sudden the solution to everyone's woes...

I'm about to send my PM 1.6 ghz G5 to Powermax (www.powermax.com) to get some money. If I don't have to buy from them, I may go with one company and get a still new dualie 2.5 and have someone else add a dual-layer DVD burner.

If I don't have to go with Powemax, I may go right to Apple and use my education discount (I teach film in a secondary school setting) and just go with the dual 2.7 and not look back. If someone has a good return policy, and the dual dualies come out within 2 weeks, I'll jump. But I'm not gonna worry that much.

I'm still about a week or two from buying.

Just the reason why I plant to wait for the Rev. B Intel Mac. Purchase something soon so that it will last until then.

Yeah, that's the best advice and in 2 years, about the time I upgrade my edit systems, I'll have dual dualie (v. B).

i'm in the same boat as some of you....i want to buy NOW! i've been wanting a mac for about 4 years now...and now i have the chance. I'm holding out till about mid october...maybe the end of october.

I'm looking at the dual 2.3
1 gb of ram (will upgrade a little late to 3 gb)
Ati 9650
wireless options

i'm also getting Logic as i want this machine for making music and i'm replacing my 2ghz 400 mhz FSB, 1 gb ram Dell Logic 5.5.1 machine. I'm sure this machine will last me years.

the only thing i'm worried about is that they will stop releasing Logic updates for PPC, then i'll be screwed again by apple.

any chance apple will keep releasing their products and they will work on both platforms?

apple will support logic on PPC for long time. they have to. anyways.. that's the beauty of Xcode.. it translates code so it will work on either processor.. the DVD/CD-roms that software ships on will contain apps for both (in most cases). so no worries. i''m a long time logic user as well.

i'm planning on upgrading sometime in november to whatever powermac i can afford. many people are int eh same boat as you. get a nice PPC to last until the mactel's are tuned and all the apps are available for audio/video and what have you.

watch the apple quicktime of the intel announcement. jobs explains it all better than my sleep deprived brain can right now. :)

I think you hit the nail on the head. Apple is quite possibly waiting for the new graphics card revisions so that they can sell them OEM in the new PowerMacs. From what I have been reading, both nVidia and ATI have two new cards in the pipeline for the Mac, the 7800 and the X1800.

I have an aging Dual G4 1.0 GHz MDD with a hard drive in its death throes and I'm itching for a new PowerMac.

I always buy immediately after a new release so now I'm playing the patience game, waiting for updates.
