From what I have been reading, both nVidia and ATI have two new cards in the pipeline for the Mac, the 7800 and the X1800.
Have you seen any specific indication there will be a Mac version of those cards, particularly the X1800? I saw a report yesterday that said there will be no AGP version of the X1800.

And I noted via another thread here that the European RefubStore (?) will close on October 3rd, which was taken as an indication there could be new Macs shortly thereafter.

You know, I haven't seen any indication that there is specifically a Mac edition in development. I'm speculating, that since the current 6800 uses one PCI slot that Apple might convert over to PCI Express graphics with the next PM revision. It doesn't seem that far-fetched as most of the industry is slowly moving away from AGP. I didn't mean to misrepresent myself, I have seen a lot of hubub about the cards and it would make sense for Apple to revise their graphics cards with a new PM revision, they pretty much always do. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Apple is quite possibly waiting for the new graphics card revisions so that they can sell them OEM in the new PowerMacs. From what I have been reading, both nVidia and ATI have two new cards in the pipeline for the Mac, the 7800 and the X1800.

I have an aging Dual G4 1.0 GHz MDD with a hard drive in its death throes and I'm itching for a new PowerMac.

I always buy immediately after a new release so now I'm playing the patience game, waiting for updates.
you could be waiting forever then

There is absolutely no way that Apple is going to wait until the switch to Intel. That would be a year and half product cycle, which Apple admittedly floundered on its last lame Power Mac update. And especially in light of all of the swirling 970MP rumors. An update is coming within a month or at the very least before the end of the year.

Apple's not dumb enough to cruise into the holiday season with their currently underwhelming desktop lineup.

Makes sense. If Apple is indeed planning a substantial PowerMac revision (aka 970MP) and not just a marginal speed bump, then it woudl make sense for them to wait for a nice new video card such as this as well.

Guess we'll find out in a week!

Upon further review, It seems as if a move to PCIe is inevitable, I'm just hoping that it's this revision and not the switch to Intel:

I didn't realize the new nVidia card was both PCI Express only and also clearly listed as Macintosh compatible. Very interesting. But I didn't see that it was dual link, or could support the 30" display resolution. I think all or most of the new ATI cards are supposed to be dual link, which may be the missing link here.

But if nothing happens on October 5, I'm tempted to set a new deadline for October 31, so I can wait for the 970mp PM and the Great Pumpkin at the same time, as both would seem to be equally likely to appear. IOW, if the graphics card isn't the roadblock, there must be some other perhaps bigger roadblock.

i dont think they can wait until the intel switch either and can't see them going into the holidays w/that powermac lineup. i will wait until december or january the latest. hopefully they are waiting for all the right components or enough on hand to be able to fill orders. ihave friends who do 'all in the box' audio/music work and have dual 2.o's or 1.8's and even though they dont hit the cpu limit too often i think all of them would update to a dual dual i fit were available.

It's a good thing I'm still waiting on some money to come in, because I REALLY need a new Power Mac. Two weeks isn't too bad of a wait, but I think we've been waiting for nearly two weeks now...

Yes, it seems like it's been a while. Let's hope we see something very soon...
