The black nano is nice but I don't know about a glossy black powerbook. Like having a black car -- looks great as long as it is always cleaned and waxed but otherwise shows all kinds of dirt and scratches.

If anything Apple should capitalize on the public's desire for color choices and sell aluminum keyboards and mice or even black ones so you can coordinate your desktop with your nano.

I predict nano colors by Christmas. Apple needs to add pink and silver, the two most popular mini colors. Or a limited edition Titanium nano. That would be cool.

Black = not happening.

Great news! I figured Apple would come out with a dual core PM sooner rather than later. I'm guessing it will be a fairly substantial upgrade, to which we'll see a minor speed bump or something of that nature mid-2006, to tide us over until the Intel PMs come out in 2007, utilizing Conroe or Woodcrest chips. Those are my predictions at least. :cool:

As for no PBs until MWSF, maybe this means they are simply going straight to Intel! Actually though, they would probably only announce the PB at MWSF, with a shipping date of a few months out, so I'm not sure if this will be the case or not, as that would result in a awful long time between updates. Perhaps a low-power G5 PowerBook? Hmm, that's doubtful too though, as I doubt Apple would completely redesign the line for a G5, what with the Intel chips coming sooner rather than later for Apple' portable line.

Guess we'll have to wait and see what Paris and San Fran bring us! :cool:

Dual dual core : higher price ?

According to the all-knowing eight-ball we can expect the prices to remain about the same.

I say, hooray! :D

Dual Dual Core

But will they be dual dual core, or just a single dual core? And can the Intel chips go dual? I know AMD has dual dual core capabilities.

Hang in there, my good old 667Mhz DVI TiBook. Just another year, I promise. Then you'll be off to a pleasant retirement.

The rapid updates to the Mac desktop lines are de-valuing the older systems at a quicker pace than what is traditional for Apple hardware. On one hand, that's fine - because it means they're pumping out the upgrades at a rate more in line with the rest of the computer industry.

However, for some of us, it is actually good.

I am just about a starving college student (living off of ramen), and my fastest computer is a B&W G3 upgraded to a G4 @ 450 MHz. I just cannot afford anything else newer right now.

However, with new speed bumps, older hardware will drop faster in price, and maybe be at a point where I can get a decent upgrade here soon. (I am wanting to get a MDD model, however those still sell for over $900 used).

The PowerMac will be the last to move to Intel so they need some power to keep sales going in the broadcast and creative markets until late 2006 when the transition takes place....

The PowerBook thought seems right on. Why? The are selling well, don't really need to invest in any updates because they are state of the art now and there is really no significantly faster G4 available. They will transition the PowerBook to Intel in the first have of next year so why intro something new now. No need.

Black PowerBooks here we come. Apple will have to make them look TOTALLY different from PowerPC based ones. Black nano is a hint.

As much as I would like to see a change, I doubt it will be black powerbooks. The nano is an iPod. Do they still make chrome Macs? No, even though they make chrome iPods. Why didn't they release a special edition U2 Powerbook? There is little correlation between iPod style and Powerbook style. And now that the iPod mini is no more, it was replaced with a chromed back nano, there is no hope that the regular iPod will become anodized aluminum. Many people thought (including me) that the iPods where following the macs style for a while. The chrome iMac G4, PowerMac G4 were followed by chrome iPods (iPods were chrome from the start is what I mean). The anodized aluminum Powerbook and powermac followed by the iPod mini. But the nano just screwed that whole link up. Black powerbooks wont be coming anytime soon, go to colorware.com for that.

No powerbooks til next year only means good things to me. ~365 days between models=one bad-ass update. (Intel too hopefully). Hopefully they'll have the power of a powerbook and the totability of the iBook.

What would be great is if Apple shocked everyone and released an Intel PowerMac this month instead of updating dead end Power PC chips.

It's wishful thinking, but I know people who would jump at the chance to buy an Intel Mac now.

I'm with iGary on this. The part of me that just bought my new 2.3 G5 this month is going "OMFG NOOO THEY CANT DO THAT TO ME". :D

But then again... in two years time that could be a nice upgrade :D who knows maybe the Duel Core's can pop into existing G5's? Maybe we could see some upgrade kits? Long shot but :cool:

I'll be so very happy to see a dual core 2.5 GHz PowerMac......I'll probably buy one first thing if I can, even though I imagine the shipping delay will most likely be a month or so.....

Intel already sells dual-core CPUS.

32 or 64 bit.

Plus a dual-core with HT.

That's 2 X 2 on one chip folks.

<Sad little puppy face>
I purchased my dual 2.7 about a month and a half ago, and after many weeks of AWFUL, and I mean AWFUl customer service, I finally got a working powermac...the first one was a DOA. This is a BTO comp so it took even extra long. I think if I call Apple up, they'd be sympathetic and hook me up with a dual dual dual dual dual dual dual dual....(sick computer!)

What the PowerMac needs;

2. Standard Airport and Bluetooth

What do you think?

Personally I don't think Wireless stuff is that necessary on a workstation class machine. Bluetooth can be added easily with a $30 USB adapter plugged into the back of the keyboard (I do this with my G5 at work), and wifi doesn't make sense for a workstation, and should be left an option.

Other than that I agree with all your points! :)

thats worse then a big ouch. THIS SUCKS

Are any of you guys really surprised? The writing's been on the wall for a while. The Mini and iBook got virtually zero CPU upgrades.

Repeat after me: No new G4-based Macs. All signs point to Apple having all but stopped the development of the G4 line. They're most likely devoting all their resources on the Intel 'books--as they should. I'd much rather Apple work on bringing Intel laptops sooner than offering meager G4 updates to tide us over.

On the upside, MWSF will be super-interesting, no?

and what OS do you plan on running? there is no version of x86 OS X ready to be released. It will be months before a version is near completion.

at least you're still in the lineup... for now. Those who bought the first dual 2GHz PowerMacs have really had a nice ride. That model had the longest lifespan in the lineup I can remember.
Actually, the original 2.0 had 8 memory slots and some other differences from the current 2.0 which is only 4 memory slots among other differences.

In some ways the people who have the original Dual 2.0 G5 have the better Dual 2.0 G5 system.

What matters the most is that people have system they're using. To most people it doesn't matter if there's a newer model as long as the system they have is doing the job for them.

Having said that, I have a G4 PowerMac that is running a bit ragged. A dual dual G5 would be a perfect replacement system.

I think they are about due finally for G5 powerbooks. the chips are announced.

also, this dual chip tower sounds great.

those two items would be great to have for the 1 year carry over time until intel chip macs start

It's not the OS, it's the apps.

But it will be closer to June 2006 before we see Intel based Macs available to purchase. And the first ones will probably be like the iBook and Mac Mini and possibly the iMac. The PowerBook will probably be a few months after that so that more of the pro apps will be intel ready.

And the PowerMac will be absolutely last in order to get things like PhotoShop and Quark and music stuff for Intel based Macs. Yes, I know some of these run under Rosetta, but not anywhere near as fast as native code would run.

Yes, we might see some of the Intel based Macs sooner than we think, but not much sooner nor will the order really change.

I also expect one PowerMac model and one PowerBook model to be available for several months afte rthe Intel based versions come out. Much like there wa sone last OS 9 bootable PowerMac available for several months after everything else went OS X boot only.

Heres to some wild hoping. My dual 2 GHz G5 is on the fritz. I have already had the Logic Board and the Superdrive replaced and now I am having kernel panics among other crashes like crazy. My apple care warranty runs out in October so my wild hoping is that Apple will classify my computer as a Lemon and as a good PR move to a very loyal customer will replace it with a new high end machine. Timing could be perfect. Although chances are next to nil I can still dream.

And if you think this new dual-core machine will be any less fussy than the current generation PM's....

if its true about hte powerbooks then its simply rediculous. 1 PB update in the span of 2 years about ... and this is the POWER line.... Its rediculous!!!!!!
