My excitement took a nosedive after hearing the no keynote news. Speedbumped Powerbooks are a given, I think, because they wouldn't be worthy of the spotlight anyway. But I would think dual-core PowerMacs would warrant a little Steve-o introduction.

I guess the only bright side is that we might get more at this media event tomorrow.

The G5 mini does indeed sound implausible. On the other hand, the last update wasn't really an update, but rather a repackaging (just more memory and and more built-in wireless stuff, which doesn't take any realy retooling of production). On the other hand, a G5 in a mini does indeed sound overheated, and if this is one of the machines that is supposed to go Intel first, why retool the whole thing twice within a year. Not worth the effort.

Powerbooks, I'd say that's a given, only we may be dissapointed with the result (little speed, no HD, etc.)

Dual Dual? Sounds great. I hope it's true. Five months since the last update (once September rolls around). Not inconceivable.

onething to think about is that intel has been saying that the dual core and hypertherded dual core processors are supposed to run cooler but that what say take it with a graine of slat!

Kay, um... "graine" is French for seed, I know that one... and I know what a slat is.... Hmm, can't say I'm familiar with that expression... :p ;)

Perhaps you water them and they make your venetian blinds grow? No? French? Hmm...new Airbus technology? Dunno.

Oh, that reminds me: go to www.Pixar.com and watch some of the short films. There's one from Monsters Inc. where Mike and Sulley are playing charades. Hilarious.

Now that Steve Jobs has backed out of giving the keynote address, what are the chances that a dual-core 970MP PowerMac will be announced at the Paris Expo? I'm very interested in the answer to this question since I just started a new job and they are going to buy me a new computer. I don't know whether to buy now or wait for the 970MP to make its appearance. Any suggestions or comments?

Macobserver reports that according to one research note, some are expecting Apple to make some major new product announcements at Apple Expo Paris in September 2005.

This reports provides few details as to the source of these expectations. It may simply be pure speculation or simply regurgitation of circulating unconfirmed rumors.

A previous rumor report did point to updated Powerbooks at the Paris expo. Meanwhile, a dual-core PowerMac G5 is certainly expected after the announcement of Dual Core 970MP processors by IBM back in July.

Well if you are waiting for advancement in the PowerPc line i would say you better have a chair. Moto was famous for paper,....... IBM seems to be about the same.

Good question. I think we can expect the updated PBs but the PowerMacs? Dunno. I thought it was a given before I heard of the cancelled keynote. If you can hold out for a few weeks it might be worth it. Maybe Steve just doesn't feel like getting on the stage and hyping PPC stuff anymore.

Cancelled keynote is no big deal. Spending an hour announcing speedbumps after the summer's shake-up is all a little unnecessary. It looks like the intention the whole time may have been to plug the new ipod and once they decided on the media event on the 7th that became a bit redundent.

I wouldn't give up on the dual cores, and the powerbooks seem a real possibility. For what it's worth macosrumors thinks it has a story on the PBs but the link is broken. I know that they tend to spout nonsense but some times it is teh fictional rumors that are the most fun - having thinksecret get it right all the time is growing tired.

I'm as perplexed as you my friend - good theories though...

Sweet, I'll have to check it out...

So is there going to be dual dual-core G5s ever? I dont ask soon, cuz thats just asking too much. But if IBM has the 970MP chips, why arent we seeing them in the market?

I would like to eventually replace my 1st gen dual 1.8 G5 for a "quad" G5 of any speed.

I'm still hoping that a new Power Mac G5 will be released this month around the Paris Expo. A long time till 2007. A dual core would be awesome.

Lets just not hope its going to be a single processor with dual core.

They could argue its the same as having 2 CPUs but half the power and space etc, but in productivity circles a dual dual core setup, using the same G5 cases/mobos etc we have now makes tons of sense to anyone doing digital media. Or just wanting to run 200 apps at once, while encoding h.264 and downloading/uploading 30 different torrents and checking your 350 widgets.

I think we'll see a nice dual-core G5 PowerMac before the Intel-based ones come out. Apple is probably eyeing the Conroe or Woodcrest chips for the PowerMac, and those aren't out until the second half of 2006, so a dual-core PPC system will fill that gap nicely until we see a Intel-based PM in late 06/early 07.

I'm sure if I bought a PowerMac now, a 970mp version would come out the next day, so I'm putting it off as long as possible. I'm hoping that at least some new information will come out at the Q&A at Paris.

i'm in the same boat. although i hope that the dual cores leave us some cheap dual 2.3 to pick up. unless steve surprises us the dual cores shouldn't be much different from the duals. i also hope for some drastic price cuts on gpu's because they are not top of the line cards anymore.

well I bought a G5 DP 2.7 a month ago.....do you think I'm a c***?

Depends what the asterisks stand for. :p ;)

I think as long as you buy the machine you need, when you need it, there isn't truly a bad time to purchase it. Yes, it stings when a line is updated soon after a purchase, especially one involving a substantial investment, but that's the way the industry works. Buy what you need and you won't be disappointed. Just because new machines come out, that doesn't magically make yours worse, slower, etc. My G4 iMac still is a fast and effective today as he day I bought it and I couldn't be happier with it, regardless of how nice those 20" 2.0 GHz G5 iMacs are!

If you always wait for the next best thing, all you'll ever end up doing is waiting. I say good for you for making the purchase.

All that being said, I predict dual-core PowerMacs in the near future, to tide us over until the Intel-based ones comes out in a year or so...

Unless my needs require an immediate solution, I tend to buy right after a big leap forward. Then I expect to be happy with the purchase today, tomorrow, and for a while afterward.

I can't believe how much bang for the buck I'm getting out my Power Mac Dual 2Ghz box. It's almost two years old and since I just added a new X800 XT video card and increased RAM to 2GB I'm thinking I'll be good for at least another 18 months. My next Power Mac will be x86 whenever that is

I have the same Power Mac and could not be happier. I upgraded to 1.5GB soon after I had it. Never had any problems.

I love it!!

Is it quiet? If Apple doesn't upgrade the mini or intro some kind of mid-Mac with a G5, I'll probably end up with one of those before they're discontinued for Intel. Not sure where I'll put it, but I'll find room.

In my case I plan to do XCode compilations, which I expect to be almost twice as fast with four cores compared with two cores at a similar Ghz and similar price (hopefully). So my chances are it will be worth waiting for, but I can't wait forever.

I second your prediction... and will expand on it.
I expect dual-core 2.5 to 2.7 Ghz dual-core PowerMacs with low end being a single dual-core 2.5 Ghz and the top end being 2 dual-core 2.7 Ghz.

The one thing we all know 100% certain is IBM will be selling JS40 blade servers with 2 dual-core 2.5 Ghz cpus on them. They will release them as product by the end of Sept 2005.

If IBM can put 2 dual-core(i.e 4 cores on a blade) then they run cool and can easily fit in a PowerMac or an Xserve.

How do I know the chips are available in quantity? Because we have ordered 2016 processors worth to be delivered at the end of October.

Another thing we know about these blades is the chipsets for them were designed by Apple. Apple has replaced the U3N chip that was used in the Xserve with a U4N that will be used by IBM on their Js40 blades.

So given the above information it is reasonable to infer that Apple is likely to have machines using their own design to deliver in the same time frame.
