... 2016 processors worth to be delivered at the end of August.

Do you mean the end of September? I wonder if we'll hear something from Paris even without a keynote.

well, i'm in the market for a 12" or 15" pb and I'm holding off until the paris expo on the 20th.

i'm hoping for dual g4 revisions across the pb line up.

but expecting processor speedbumps and the introduction of DDR2. New screens would be nice but I get a bad feeling if that happens it will be for the 15" and 17"only.

God dammit, the wait is killing me.

Why did I have to get interested in getting a PB at this time? Why couldn't I pick up the interest two months ago, or a month later when I hear wind of new PB being released?

I really hope the possible update of PB will equip the 12" with a higher resolution screen. A wide screen one is even better. I don't think it would be easy for me to go backward from wide to 4:3.

Is it quiet? If Apple doesn't upgrade the mini or intro some kind of mid-Mac with a G5, I'll probably end up with one of those before they're discontinued for Intel. Not sure where I'll put it, but I'll find room.
I think it is very quiet

Freescale based powerbooks.

I've been reading up on the freescale chip designs here:

http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/overview.jsp?code=DRPPCDUALCORE

Also an article from the inquirer:

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=25388

If these were implemented into a last powerbook update it would kind of make sense. Apple could take the tact of new quality PPC's right up to the switch. It also makes sense that Steve would be at the Paris expo to field technical questions about the powerbooks but not making an opening keynote announcing them as at the same time he does not want to be too associated with the "old" apple technologies.

The next stevenote will see him at least demonstrating intel based machines.

I feel your pain, I've been holding out for a serious PB update myself. For me, higher density screens are a must!

I doubt Apple's going to update the 12" anymore, the rumors seem to point to Apple dumping the 12" PB. If stepping backward from 16:9 is a major issue, then I would recommend waiting for the possible 13" wide PB or upgrading to a 15" PB instead. Especially since the 12", as it stands, isn't even HD, is 4:3, and has more in common with the iBook under the hood than the 15" or 17" PBs. If the rumors prove true, Apple's going to be introducing a 13" wide soon/some day in the near future.

Like all things, necessity it King; if you need it now then you should get a PB. if you can wait, wait.

good luck!

Apple's going to have to do something to try to sell Intel boxes. I think we can count on them holding back on the big stuff like case redesigns, higher resolution displays, etc. until then. Hopefully there will be some nice revisions under the hood before that.

If True...

If this works out to be true, it would be awsome! I'd rather get a last Gen PPC Powerbook than a 1st or 2nd gen Intel Mac.

I hope, with any CPU, RAM, Cache etc. update higher density screens will be included. Especially on the 17" PB. The WUXA screens with XBright or TrueLife are really awsome and have great colour responses/fidelity/brightness and great viewing angles.

I wonder if Moto/Freescale has announced a potential date for large scale production of the MPC8641(D)? It seems more likely the 7448 will be released first since that's been benchmarked since early this year and is pin for pin compatible with the current CPU/Motherboard in the PB. The MPC8641D would be nice though.

Another possibility for the Paris Q&A session is to explain why there will be no more PPC upgrades.

PowerBook updates on Sept. 17?

This is my first post on the forum; I come to this site a lot and I too, am eager for a PowerBook update as the current ones aren't far more advanced than the current iBooks.

Just thought I'd post this little bit of info. Yesterday, I was in Knoxville, TN at the COMPUSA there and one of the sales associates in the "Apple Store" section was an Apple enthusiast. I was talking with her about various aspects of the iBooks and PowerBooks and she mentioned that according to her Apple rep, new PowerBooks were coming out on the 17th.

I was pretty surprised to hear that because the Paris expo isn't until the 20th. But, there you have it.

It is about time for an update so chances are the info is right. Release date is weird BUT since no keynote maybe not that weird.

As has been said many times before, Apple sales people tend to know nothing about upcoming releases - Apple leaves them in the dark. So, although this is nice to hear, I wouldn't put any stock in it just because it's coming from an Apple sales associate. Regardless, it would be nice to see!

Just take a clear sheet of mylar or similar 1-2mm thick plastic, cut it to precisely the right size, and place it over your iBook or PowerBook's screen. You'll get the XBrite effect.

There's a company that sells precut plastic sheets just for this purpose for $20 apiece but I don't have a link. One of my friends has one on his 17" PowerBook. It's sort of impressive except for the glare (if you're not in a dark room).

My friend has an HP with that and I really dislike it. It looks nice only from like one angle and the glare is ridiculous. They could've at least used some sort of polarizer or something.

You've convinced me. ;)

Seriously though, I wonder what the refraction index of the polymer is. That would be cool if you could get the link, I'd like to check it out for a compare and contrast. The glare would be a big turn off for me and I still can't imagine a piece of plastic on a 1440x900 WXGA can equal a 1920x1200 WUXGA with twice the backlight luminosity. I've seen the more recent XBrights with the new glare reduction and you can use them in a sunlit room and their visibility is comparable to non-XBrites.

This is true. I like hearing this, but I try not to get too excited. If they did announce it during Paris, then it might be possible it ships to retailers on the 17th, or something. I say that because there were some labels on my current PB's shipping box that I got in February, which were before the release date.

Apples can be run with intel now correct? Does anyone know if they can run with AMD, or will be able to in the near future?

Yeah, they run fast on AMD chips. At least the one my friend got up an running. That was on an AMD 3500 64bit SSE2 chip.

If there is going to be a 13" PB, I'll be in heaven! :D

Didn't want a 15" because for me it is too big to lug around. And I have played my friend's 14" before. While attractive, it's still not light enough. (I'm a wuss ) The perfect size is something like a sony vaio s series. So if the rumor turn out to be true, my local apple store will have another happy customer!

*cross fingers*
