All Steve said was by this time next year. You cannot extrapolate that into Intel Macs at MWSF '06.

I'd suggest you read WWDC's keynote transcripts

But starting next year we will begin introducing Macs with Intel processors in them and over time these transitions will again occur. So when we meet here again this next time next year, our plan is to be shipping Macs with Intel processors by then, and when we meet here again two years from now, our plan is that transition will be mostly complete.

What part of that sounds like announcing and shipping at WWDC 2006 and Apple AFAIK has NEVER shipped a MAJOR update without a Steve Jobs event hence the reason x86 at MW '06. Oh and FYI the iPod Photo was announced in Paris's Apple Expo. I should know. I ordered mine 5 minutes after he announced it. The original iPod was launched at Apple Expo and shipped in October '01 Software is another matter but we aren't talking software are we?

An interesting difference of opinion. Did the mini update in July preclude new minis next month or were they stalling for time with the last mini update?

Personally, I don't think the previous update had anything to do with a possible G5 mini they may have been working on. They simply updated the mini to keep it current. As a newer member of the Macintosh line, the mini is/was likely to get more frequent updates.

I agree wholeheartedly. In addition, Apple might be trying to "cram in" updates that were originally slated for release over a longer period of time. The intel announcement has likely disrupted more than one schedule at Apple.

I always thought it was the PowerMacs that get intel processors in 2007. The iBooks and low end Macs get the processors in 2006.

I'm hoping the new powerbooks will have improved battery life, especially the 15inch. The new 7448 processor from Freescale seems likely to increase the battery life because it runs cooler (less fan) and uses less power...

Where's the fan in the PowerBook?

The PowerBooks do really need an update, so if September gives us a realtively minor update, I think that's a tell-tale sign that we'll be seeing Intel PowerBooks sooner rather than later, possibly MWSF.

How about PCIe for the PowerMacs? There are huge advantages with that technology over AGP, I'm surprised Apple hasn't moved to it yet...

I doubt there will even be any mention of the PowerBooks in Paris. I think, if the rumors turn out to be true, it'll just be one of those updates that happens a few days later. No fanfare, just the updated Apple Store.

Then, as soon as possible in '06, the intel-based Powerbooks are released. That might even warrant a "special media event" if it doesn't fall in line with one of the conferences.

I assume it's near the screen because when the powerbook gets hot, you can feel a slight whir of air flowing if you put your fingers just under the screen where the hinge sits. I hope that helps...

In fact it's [a mac mini] exactly what I'd buy while I wait out the whole transition to Intel and I'm sure a lot of people would feel the same way.

That doesn't mean I think Apple will do it because it will be a marketing nightmare trying to explain to punters how come a Powerbook's top end G4 is faster than a low end G5! Unless of course they have something awesome in the pipeline for Powerbooks and can ride out the storm . . . here's hoping!

You summed up exactly how I feel. As far as the PowerBook complaints, though, I think people have to view Apple's products as desktops vs. portables rather than i-something vs. Power-something. I say we compare the PowerBook to the iBook not the iMac.

Prediction: Wintel Macs will ship before Longhorn does.

yeah, way to go waaaaaaay out on a limb there.

at the current rate, continental drift will put Apple headquarters in Japan before Longwait ships......

OK, maybe 1 colossal fan. :)

[SHOUTS]It's WHISPER quiet![/SHOUTS]

thats funny....

ok, looks like i order my new machines on September 21, regardless of revision or no revision.

G5 Mini? i doubt it, it would already exist in a powerbook if they could cram it into that case...., but the G5 iMac is pretty slim, soooooooo.....

otherwise some sort of iMac rev, either way, i aint buying on the 19th only to find that on the 20th....

Keep in mind that the G5 (low-power version) in question has just recently become available.

How long does it usually take Apple to get new chips into the exisiting hardware? It doesn't seem like they can get these new powermacs out by September 24th...

For anyone who hasn't realised it yet, the mini is nothing more than laptop components configured into a little box, but minus the screen, keyboard, and power supply. We will NOT see a G5 in a mini until it's in a laptop.

So Apple releases both!

How do you know that Apple isn't planning on releasing both a new G5 PowerMini and a new G5 PowerBook in Paris? :D

Maybe both will use the just announced IBM low-power G5? That's why we haven't seen a G5 PB yet because Apple has been waiting on this chip?

Maybe Apple realizes that they need a positive impact to boost sales prior to christmas and they have a short time before the switch to Intel. This allows Apple to use some of the same parts between the PowerMini and the G5 PowerBook. :D

Uh, wasn't the iPod photo release at the special Euro iTMS event? Along with the U2 iPod, right?

I seriously doubt that Apple will release a G5 PB, with the intel ones on the way in less than a year. It just doesn't seem like a very good idea. They'd have to come up with a seriously low power chip, and since the G4s were already too hot (according to some), I just don't see any G5s being produced that can fit the bill. Especially since SJ's announcement at WWDC stating that one of the primary concerns for switching to intel was the performance-to-power ratio.

He even had a graph for that one.

If mini gonna have a G5, the eMacs should get it too, otherwise noone will buy eMac anymore.

The G5 chip has already been announced

IBM announced the new low-power G5 already at the "Power Conference" along with the new dual core G5 processors. According to IBM, Apple has been working with prototypes of these chips since 2004. Apple could easily put one of these new chips in a PB. So your first argument against th G5 PB is moot!

How do you know that an Intel PB will be released in less than a year? I think a timed release using the Intel 64 bit Merom chip, along with 64 bit Leopard will be announced for the PB at MWSF 2007. If the lag times are typical, Jan. announcement means a March 2007 delivery. That is more like 18 months from Paris 2005 and sounds just about right. ;)

Prediction

Ok, I'm going to predict something that I'm sure will not happen.

Apple's going to release a triple-CPU PowerMac. It's gonna have a low-power, dual-core G5, a Freescale G4, and a Pentium M.

There's also going to be an add-on card to add a G3 and a Celeron M processor.

And while I'm doing crazy predictions, they'll release a low-cost, headless computer - without even a keyboard or mouse!*

* I did say that a few weeks/months before the release of the Mac mini. Scary, isn't it? ;)

No, it wasn't.
It was released at a special event in ( I believe ) Palo Alto, California and featured a set by Nobo (it's an anagram) and the Edge.

Why? The Mac mini is twice as thick as the PowerBook and so has room for a fan large enough to cool a low-power G5 processor. There is also no concern for battery life with the Mac mini. The same cannot be said for the PowerBook. The new low-power G5 is still hotter and more power hungry than the new low-power G4.

The low-power G4 is ideal for the PowerBook until the Intel transition.

Yes, I have my doubts about a G5 Mac mini but it got passed over for an update for a reason. No, it wasn't updated last month. It just got a price adjustment and a new "all-options" package.

It didn't get updated because:

(A) It's being killed off.
(B) They didn't want to put any more effort into it as it will be the first to go Intel in 6 months.
(C) It's getting a G5 in a couple months and they need to clear inventory.
