Why? Think how many mini's will sell then. Apple needs a platform to get the software kinks worked out. Better to do it with the mini than the Power Mac. Plus, buyers of the mini probably won't get much other software than what comes with it. You won't see mini buyers getting Adobe Suite or Final Cut Studio. You might see a few wanting to run MS Office, but they will probably settle for iWorks. Which leads me to think that Apple will announce a spreadsheet application as well.

I think it makes perfect sense. OS X will run on Intel NOW. iLife will run on Intel NOW. And I'm pretty sure iWorks will run on Intel NOW. So why not bring out a system that will run a current Intel Pentium M based processor now. We all know the Power Macs will run an Intel dual core low wattage chip that will debut sometime next year. So there's no point in waiting for the Mac Mini to use an Intel processor.

Here's the timeline as I see it.

September 2005 - Mac Mini's go Intel
January 2006 - PowerBooks/iBooks go Intel
March 2006 - ??? (Maybe PowerBooks slip)
June 2006 - iMacs go Intel
September 2006 - Power Macs go Intel

Impossible. THe Apple Developer site says "2006" is the first one. Which means Macworld since he also said macintels would ship "by WWDC 06", and he'll certainly announce it at a big event. Probably the Mac mini or eMac.

Sniff Sniff.... Smells like Widescreen iBook

I'm holding out to purchase the last PPC PowerMac before the Intel switch and I would be tickled pink if they went Dual Core Dual G5 PowerMac in September, BUT.... Like I said in the Title, this sounds way too much like the rumors of the widescreen iBook. I got sucked in by the hype because it sounded very plausible to go 13.1" widescreen and I was all set to sell my current iBook and buy a new widescreen iBook. What a let down that was. It just seems that Apple has done a knock out job clipping all the inside info from leaking out since the beginning of the year.

Actually two things to go on....

1. "this time next year"
2. Apple doesn't release major upgrades without an event. Speedbumps yes. Major upgrades no, and I would consider an x86 Mac Mini to be a MAJOR upgrade.

Right...this time next year does not equal January. It means by WWDC '06, there will be shipping x86 Macs. About the major event, sure, I agree. But it is silly to think that since Apple will only announce big things at keynote events, they must do so at MWSF '06 since it will be too late at the next logical event, WWDC '06.

Steve doesn't grace the stage all that often, but it is wrong to think Apple's calendar for a year goes MWSF/WWDC/Paris done. If that were true, Apple would only have 3 opportunities to announce revolutionary products.

So what about when Steve announced the iTMS? Or iTunes for Windows? Or the iPod? Or The European iTMS? Or the iPod photo? All of those things are arguably less important than a switch to Intel and all of those things happened at special events. So who is to say that Apple won't have a special media event in between MWSF '06 and WWDC '06.

All Steve said was by this time next year. You cannot extrapolate that into Intel Macs at MWSF '06.

The eMac is a dying breed. Or at least the CRT eMac is. If they put a G5 in an eMac they may as well go LCD and make their entire line they same type of display tech but then you have the iMac.

Hmmm.

Make it look like a iMac G4 BUT WITH A G5 chip in it, with the lowest ghz they can get on a G5 ( no lower then 1.42) , and it would have a LCD

AppleInsider had a rumor a while back saying that PBs were getting a measly 30MHz update at MW Paris. Seems like Apple wouldn't bother for such a small increase, but if they doubled up... Any chance that Apple would release a dual 1.7 PB? Sweet.

I think that the new powerbooks are the most likely as well as the dual dual g5. If I didnt care so much about portability, I would go for that as opposed to the g5. Anyway, I think that the G5 mini is the least likely to be true, as it has been posted that the mini would be more powerful than the powerbook (in some areas).

A new powerbook I can see.

A new Powermac is in the realm of possibility.

But a G5 Mac Mini is a little hard to swallow. And it would really suck that a Mac Mini is now more powerful than a Powerbook.

Those Yonah chips can't come soon enough.

According to many benchmark tests, the Mini is already more powerful than every laptop except the 17".

That would be sweet. I was set on purchasing a 20" g4 iMac but then they released that nasty looking g5 iMac...no offence to anyone who owns one, but I MUCH prefered the g4 style.

Put the iBong down.

I'm doubtful about the G5 mini rumour, since I believe the mini is slated to be the first Intel Mac

x86

An x86 mini would be the sweetest thing, even if it has a cheap ass intel P4 chip in it. That way OS X can be hacked decently and spread faster to increase awareness of its beauty. Hackers will get their hands on it, and will definitely brag about it to their non hacker (non apple) friends, which in turn will love the mac, and when a chance arises will buy a beautiful proper mac. Does anyone have a better idea than this to advertise the mac platform?
This will be hell cool. I would love that to happen. This is my ultimate sexual fantasy. Mac OS X needs to be out there and kicking like a shark not a little fish before longhorn (vista) comes out.

You will get your wish in Jan 2006

We have similar tastes - I prefer my G4 iMac's design to the new G5 iMac as well.

That's a good thing. Then why would the PC Connection Magazine that I just got yesterday or today have that PowerBook ad that makes it look like they're new and just came out ?? That's just Stupid !!

That's just marketing.

Um, how would you, no, where would you...

This is just sick.

Damn, a G5 Mini would really make me mad.

i really dont think we have to worry about a g5 mini to many cool ing and space issues, and theres no way they would come out with a g5 mini when there isn't g5 laptops

So, this may be a little far-fetched, but bare with me.

A few months ago, Apple drops the 1.8GHz single G5. This new (speculative) PB update is to have about 1.7GHz. What if apple took left over 1.8 G5's, tweaked them to keep from overheating thus yielding only 1.7GHz, and slapped 'em into a powerbook. This would fulfill Steve's promise of exciting PPC upgrades in the pipeline.

I'd go for that.

As I stated in other forums/blogs, the G5 Mac mini is highly unlikely because there was just a Mac mini update not even a month ago. The other two rumors *may* happen, but I'm not holding my breath.

Fishes,
narco.

If they can fit a G5 in a Mini in this short of time... then we should've gotten a G5 PB a year ago.

Don't know if the mini is going G5, but as someone pointed out before, the same thing was said about iMacs before they went G5.

If this rumor is true it would be quite an exciting set of updates. Although, is it really worth buying and of these new updated products, with the imminent MacTel Macs? I suspect a lot of people will hold off buying anything until the Intel chips are in place. For me, and for many Mac enthusiasts, I have to have to latest and greatest. Knowing that Intel Macs are coming out makes me hesitant to buy anything anymore PPC Macs, because it essentially means I would be buying an already outdated computer.

Horatio

Mactel Macs? Now there's something I hadn't heard. At least it has "Mac" two times in it. I hope people don't call them MacTels or Macintels once they are released. As I had said in other posts, they were never called MotoMacs or IBMacs or any other weird name before the Intel announcement. I don't think people should combine the words Intel and Mac. I think a better way to differentiate Macs would be to call them x86 PowerMac, x86 PowerBook, etc. Don't you think?
