did anyone else take note that apple's stock went up almost 3.00 today because of this announcement.

Apples stock always rises the days and weeks leading to an Apple event. Usually the stock drops after the Keynote if nothing what is hyped is released, or if the announced product does not live up to that hype. ;) :)

it's no Mac, but I like the looks of it. hell, depending on price, and if the PBs don't come out in time, I might just get one and put OS X on it. still, I can't help but get the feeling that Acer made this announcement just to beat Apple to announcing the first Yonah-powered laptop. and if that's the case... maybe they know something we only strongly suspect:

New PowerBooks next Tuesday!!!

:D

What I would really like to see in the next generation PowerBooks is biometrics fingerprint scanner built into the touchpad. No ugly little square on the laptop itself. Put it into the touchpad and do away with passwords or at least let the key chain deal with it and all you need to do is give your PowerBook the finger. :D

The processor weighs VERY little, I doubt Yonah has much to do with weight other than allowing the heat sink to be smaller.

And with the top of the line specs on this thing (2 GB of RAM? And geez, look at that GPU) it probably needs a much bigger heat sink :D
Ok, I guess I had that coming...
What I mean was that Yonah are suppose to be much more efficient than the current PPC at same pocessor speed -> smaller (lighter) batts AND longer batt time.
I hope I got it correct this time :)

macs are specifically made to be lighter.

try telling that to my Power Mac. I have a hard time lifting it off my desk.

You have to remember your average PC laptop gets 3 hours tops. Macs are "getting" 6 hours now so we should easily get 9 hours with Intel... CANT WAIT

how many years ago was that? most PC 'tops are outstripping the PBs for battery life. that's the whole reason for the Intel switch.

They're the kind of specs i'd like to see in the new PBs, plus at least 10 other brilliant new features from Apple :D

I wouldnt count on that many amazing new things other than the processor. I think at this time the computers may end up costing ttoo much to make if apple goes to far with new features.

6 hours battery life, uh oh. What happened to lower power=longer life. Good looking laptop but Apple will include an iSight in the lid. Heck, they should update the Cinema Displays with built-in iSights.
For goodness sake, it's not exactly a PowerBook is it - my first laptop was an Acer, and it had about 1 1/2 hours battery life, and that was only about 3 years ago. I don't think THAT many laptops have a 6 hour battery life at the moment - not even 4 hour!

alright guys.. for a windows laptop it's pretty nice:rolleyes: ... but... 512mb graphic card!? thats just insane... i like the built in 1.3mp camera... but... the biggest problem here is still lack of OS X :p

If and when Windows Vista arrives, 512MB of VRAM won't seem excessive. I believe the high end graphical effects in Vista require quite a large slab of video RAM. I think this is just a little future-proofing.

the iBook has 6 hours

Also, mac would not go with a chip for the ibooks/mac minis that would highten prices. They want to lower ibook prices to compete with dell,hp, etc. At macworld you will see a brand new ibook 799.99. The Mac mini prices will stay the same because Jobs will likely update them significantly besides the new processors.

Amem.

It would be great if your predictons turn out to be true. A $799 ibook would be very sweet indeed.

Seven days... (Wow, I just remebered "RING", that movie... hehehe)

Everything, and also everything else

It's always fun to see all the people running around with their heads in the clouds before a keynote, not realizing that this laptop is heavy for a reason, and you just CAN'T have a beautiful, slim, light laptop that is also the fastest out there...:)

I'll be more than happy if Apple manages to create a PowerBook that looks like the current G4 models and performs like this Acer, even if it's still 6 months away (which is what I predict anyway).

Naaa. They had to add something to it even if its just the design. At this point gearheads are looking to Apple to see why are they so much better then the other hardware on the market. It prob won't happen until 2007 but just wait. My money is on Apple being one of the first out of the gate with OLED displays in their laptop line.

I highly doubt you will ever see any Apple laptop fall under a $999.

Any word on Ship date for these machines? Then we can kind of get an idea if Apple announces them next week when those will be sent

according to the article the shipdate for the acers is about now give or take a couple days.

Yeah right...dream on.
I doubt that Apple will try to compete with Dull. Apple has been known to keep the prices at preset level and instead improve the specs as time goes by.

Ya but my point is that this is an Acer laptop... If they can squeeze 6 hours out of it, imagine what apple can do.

And since when did we have 512MB graphics cards?!

I agree that there will be significant design changes, but not any huge hard drive upgrades or stuff like that. The reason i predict the lower price is simply because apple is fighting for market share. They want more people owning their laptops. They can doo it this year with a slight lowering in prices. JUST WATCH

Theyve always had those graphics cards, but apple never really found the need for them. Except in the special custom orders from movie/game companies.

"We" (as in "we, the apple community") did since they started shipping the Quadro 4500. Not quite the card you'd manage to squeeze into a laptop, but still.

"The others" had that stuff for quite a while. Some years, if you count the professional 3d cards.

very true. I'm hoping this will make graphic card prices drop, bringing Mac card prices down too. and what you can do on a 512 MB - 1 GB card when you don't have Vista's topheavy UI dragging the thing down... makes me go weak at the knees.

computer prices are dropping all the time. some people here will remember when Macs cost $4000+. it may not be this MacWorld, but the prices will certainly drop. if not, Apple will just fade away.
