are they really THAT power hungry? Got any references to back up that statement?

they wont drain your battery, but they create heat. There goes energy. ask anybody else in the forum.

It's been weeks since I hadn't posted anything on MacRumors. But seeing as new laptop rumors are here once and again, well here I go again as well.

Does everybody forget Apple product launches so easily? Up to two weeks before everybody gathers info on other "similar" products that are expected to be innovated in some way by Apple, and Apple only releases a product with half of what you were expecting.
Some may think it's not a good example but take the iPod nano's announcement. Everybody was waiting for something as revolutionary as the first iPod and we got a tiny iPod photo but it had only half the capacity of what we were expecting.
What about the "white" iPod? Apple iPod's have been getting better and better, but accesories and some features have been disappearing one after another. First it was the remote that connected to the headphones and the Apple iPod case and now it's been the dock, the AC adapter and Firewire support. And of course Apple makes us think: Who needs a case? Who needs an AC adapter? Who needs Firewire?

Apple seems to sacrifice some things to be able to add new features and still keep the prices at the same levels. That Acer laptop seems to have some of the highest specs you can find on a laptop, so I think we should expect only as much as that for the fastest PowerBook and other "trimmed-down" and cheaper versions.
Rumors are about getting our hopes up, but come on... do you really think they'll pull off a PowerBook with so many new features by the end of this month?
I'm betting we won't see anything PowerBook until the middle of the year.

Then you have a machine that is exclusive to the CDMA market. I doubt that Apple would do that mistake.
It was an example. Maybe you could choose what service. Don't care if its cingular or anything else. Just a good service. Verizon works best where i am. But that might not be true in other parts of the country.

EDIT: I'm actually not sure if cingular has a service like verizon's internet. I'll have to check that.

EDIT: They do so they could offer options.

I'll be more than happy if Apple manages to create a PowerBook that looks like the current G4 models and performs like this Acer, even if it's still 6 months away (which is what I predict anyway).
whoa? Powerbooks 6 whole months away? What about iBooks? That is something I strongly doubt, as I believe many/most people on this thread do, seeing that the laptop processors are seriously in need of a processor(/speed) update.
May I ask the reasons for your suspicion?

What I would really like to see in the next generation PowerBooks is biometrics fingerprint scanner built into the touchpad. No ugly little square on the laptop itself. Put it into the touchpad and do away with passwords or at least let the key chain deal with it and all you need to do is give your PowerBook the finger. :D
Give a Powerbook the finger? What kind of cruel person are you?? Ye shall burn in Hell!
Ok, jk, of course, like you were. :D

I don't even expect powerbooks to get those specs (OK.. maybe the 17inch)
but come on. MAc world will bring us new ibooks and mac minis. You cant expect much more than that.

Ehm... heat from nowhere??? I.e. heat/energy from elsewhere than the battery...
I think you just solved the energy crisis. ;)
Just kidding, I seriously had no idea how much the different component stood for in terms of energy consumption, hence my question. :)

The problems are more in what kind of system the vireless provider uses. You got GSM, CDMA, PDC, UMTS... The cellular maket is in a terrible uncoordinated mess

I agree, but... I say only Mac minis and something for the iPod. New iPod shuffles maybe?

The brighter or more use the LCD gets the more power the graphics card uses. The more power the graphics card uses the hotter it gets. The hotter it gets the faster the fans run.The faster the fans run the faster the battery drains..

basically :)

I don't understand why they would even put a 512mb video card in a laptop other than to flex its nerd muscle. This article from May showed that under most situations the extra 256mb didn't do too much.

yup. you couldnt have explained it better

anyone have prices for the PowerPC processors in large lots as a comparison?

arn
Spent some time looking but just couldnt find current pricing. Historically speaking PPCs are pretty cheap compared to the other guys. My guess is the 1.6 single for ibook and the dual cores for Powerbook and apple wont even bother with the highest Yonahs for now unless they have 1 more thing.

how many years ago was that? most PC 'tops are outstripping the PBs for battery life. that's the whole reason for the Intel switch.
Ok, we're only switching to Intel for battery life in your mind? Not speed? Wouldn't that be a little silly? Or not, to on-the-go laptop users? Just wondering here, not trying to act all arrogant.... I am fairly new to the computer world, and therefore, fairly ignorant. But the whole switch just for battery life? That seems too fair fetched, but if you feel that's the reasons for laptops w/ Intel first... I guess I can understand that, a tad.

Personally, my greatest interest is seeing what apple will do with these new laptops? I don't care whats in em if it last long and works great. I'd trust apple with my life.

What would you guys think needs to be updated besides the processors and the "look" of the laptops?

Sure you may. Yes, the PowerBooks are in serious need of a speed upgrade. But that doesn't help at all when inventing a laptop. It's not like they got tons of new hardware just hiding behind Steve's back. They surely want to announce and ship the great stuff, but that doesn't mean they don't have to put these systems together first. Acer has most likely been working on this laptop before Apple announced their CPU switch. And it's definitely worse to ship a product that is not ready for prime time than to sell machines that are not the fastest anymore. For 90% out there, the PowerBook still has enough horsepower, and Apple has to be careful with their first Intel-based Mac (= it HAS TO convince everyone, because that's what decides Apple's future). They can't take the risk to rush out something that isn't working.

I'd love to see a new PowerBook next week, but I just can't see it happen. As for the iBook, I think it's more likely. But the question remains: Should Apple take the big risk, just to prove that they can do it even faster than they told us?

Woah. Radeon X1600?

Woah.

If the powerbook specs are this....with even a Radeon X800 video card....

I'll have to buy one.

I just hope software companies are on the ball in releasing x86 versions of their apps. Especially Alias Maya!

PC specs as a clue to Apple specs?!?

A little wobbly... a little queasy...

OK, I'm good!

I'm glad it's not a "superthick" (at least, judging by the picture it seems no thicker than the current AlBook 15's) and I'm looking forward to the coming months from Apple.

How can the Yonah be power hungry, when Steve got up on stage and shower Intel processor vs power performance against PPC...? Maybe they were lying......

Well, there a few versions of Yonah, and the real improvement in power consumption will come with Merom in june, wich will only need 5w in a dual core configuration performing 2x faster than Yonah.. (Or that is what the Intel public roadmap says..)

Anyway, everyone knows that the topend Yonah processor was going to be power-hungry, in the same way the Pentium M 2,12Ghz uses more power than the typical 1,6Ghz version.. The hotspot is the low-voltage one, or even the 1,83Ghz version..

It would be great if your predictons turn out to be true. A $799 ibook would be very sweet indeed.

Seven days... (Wow, I just remebered "RING", that movie... hehehe)
Actually, 6days, 16hrs, 41min. Got that by referring to my handy little widget! :D But of course, if you're belittling it be rounding days, 7 days indeed.
Oh, and of course I'm kidding.

Whats M$ supposed to be calling their version of widgets in 6-18 months??
*cough* *cough* :D
