Yeah, I don't mind going to the bathroom and washing my hands before I use the overlay everytime....

They will probably just give you a cloth for the screen, while charging you 3000 for the base model with the ssd as a 1000 option

Again - why is this page 1 news?

Because it's a patent release that gives clues to where Apple is heading in regards to multi touch technology. The patent isn't some far-fetched rumor.
BTW, it was posted on Appleinsider as a top story hours before Macrumors so other Mac sites find this story worthy. On the other hand, why do you think this is not page one news? Just curious.

This is exciting to see what Apple is developing. I'm only thinking about how much AppleCare would cost for something like that.

as i did with my iphone, add it onto your existing homeowners insurance (or whatever insurance company you go through for your car). most will add on items like this. my company did for $30/year for the new 16GB iPhone and that covers it if i drop it, throw it in a lake, drive over it, anything. way better than apple!!

Stylus?

Oooh! Now THIS I could get used to! It'd be perfect for touch typists, and it would be GREAT for graphic artists :D Just hope they let us use a stylus with this... Way to go Apple!

Dude do you really want a stylus.

I can't stand the things. Totally fiddly as we would say in the U of the K. Don't you think its nice that you can whip out your iPhone and just tap away without having to search for a stylus. I know I do.

However ohh. It would be so cool to see this out in market whatever the final config of the device. Chow!

I agree. The touch is so much more convenient. I like the touch more than the stylus I used on my old Palm V.

Stupid Idea

I hate to be a downer but this is why :apple:-people get criticized for being such relentless fanboys (sheep). This is a really stupid idea because it accomplishes nothing that dual (or a single) multitouch screens cannot accomplish by themselves. True, it would save you from fingerprinting-up your macbook screen, but do you really want to flip the "keyboard" up whenever you want to interact with the screen? Plus there is no way the translucent screen could have as good color, clarity, and resolution as a multitouch LCD.

The future of computing lies in interacting "directly" with your information, even in a way with "tactility" (physics-based/natural-language interactions), and not through any kind of translucent screen that you have to flip back and forth all the time.

The *ONLY* possible thing it would be good for is interacting with your data through the machine (i.e. the scroll-wheel on the back of the iPod that appears visually on the screen when you interact with it, increasing screen space), but as far as I can tell the patent does not cover this.

--ALSO-- First post! Sorry it was so negative, I read and enjoy MacRumors regularly though.

I was thinking in terms of graphics applications. Don't get me wrong, I love the touch interface, but I can't see getting as much precision out of my finger as I would with a stylus.

Yes, nice way to start... introduce yourself by calling users on the list 'sheep'. That always goes over well.
Having disregarded the rest of your post, I suggest you sit back and see what posters who think before they post have to say.

Sounds cool but the lower frame with the double sided transparent film sounds like it could easily be broken, either by excessive pressure or a nice rap on something.

Also there is the issue of balance / weight distribution, if the screen side is heavier it will need a leg th keep the screen from falling backwards.

What do you think?

** otherwise known as "a method for removal and prevention of undesirable foreign contaminants on a touch-based computer display interface"

Apple probably owns that patent already. Expect to be sued in the near future for washing your hands without paying.

Yeah its called iWash, was announced for february, but it got delayed and probably will be available next september

Stuff like this just makes the MODBOOK less attractive specially at the current price starting point.

Fingerworks touchstream

Apple bought a company a few years ago that already makes this device. Once they bought the company they closed the doors on the business and integrated the technology into the macbook pro and iphone(multi touch). Here is a link to the web site of the defunct company.

The guys behind fingerworks now work at apple. I have one of these keyboards, they are really great, best keybord I have ever used.

Check out their other patients.

Maybe if you'd gone ahead and read my post you'd know that I actually said people call apple lovers "sheep" when they call any idea apple spits out good without evaluating its merits.. much like you disregarded my criticism without evaluating its merits.

I wondered how long it would be before Apple investigated a translucent, touch screen interface! - I'll take some of the credit for that Steve, thanks ;)

Just pointing out manners that most learn in 2nd grade.
If you want to be taken seriously, avoid ad hominem labels like 'sheep' and 'fanboy' when introducing yourself.

There is a stylus-like gesture (minus the stylus) in Apple's recent gestures patent.
The user acts as if they are holding the stylus, and the gesture is registered as if a stylus was I use.
Sounds interesting enough...
