All of the issues listed there are easily solved by going to private mode in your browser - the lack of ”privacy” there seems to all be related to issues with people having access to your computer. That’s not at all the same as if ddg collected information - it’s just your own web browser/machine that keep track of your history.

Apple should consider buying Duck Duck Go or building their own search engine to replace Google as the default on Apple devices. I know they probably won’t do it while they receive $12bn a year from Google.

I’ve been using Duck Duck Go as my default search engine on my iPhone and iPad for some time. However, I wish I could set Qwant as the default instead, as it gets better results (at least for me). It’s also (supposedly) privacy oriented and as it’s based in France, it’s under the GDPR. Anyone else using Qwant?
Also been slowly migrating away from gmail to Mailbox.org (based in Germany, so under GDPR as well). Wanted to go with Proton Mail, but it was just too expensive :/

With the exception of YouTube (I don’t login) I’m as Googleless and I possibly be. From shunning their services to ensuring my router avoids their DNS servers. Back in the 80s and 90s there were anti Microsoft people that detested they way they did business but Google is in another realm.

If I use a gmail email address loaded into Apple Mail is IOS do these same privacy concerns apply? Currious how much of this is the Google apps and how much is just accessing thier servers.

I believe Google parses every gmail mail fir data it can harvest. Doesn’t even need an app for that, it’s all on their email service already.

meh. lol Like any of this will stop people from using Google's services.
Why would it? People can shout privacy all they like but in this thread already people are using something else but prefer Chrome for the search results or prefer chrome because it has something useful like opening hours. People use it to tell when a store is busy and pick a quieter time.

How does Google know a store is less busy at x time? Yes, of course, harvesting all that information like location. Why is Siri so **** and Alexa and Google home so much better? And so on.

People choose what works best for them. I don't believe everyone is ignorant to the fact Google collects so much data, not in this day and age when it is heavily publicised. There are different services that produce different outcomes for different reasons.

Privacy is important, I am not suggesting otherwise but sharing of data is bad on one hand but good on the other.

But, whatever I guess, there will never be a balanced discussion on MR.

Why not use Apple Mail as well as iCloud Mail for personal use?

What's the old saying? if you aren't the customer, you are the product. Well, I *could* use a lot of Google services for free, but that sure doesn't mean Google isn't looking through my cloud drive files, reading my emails, listening to my phone calls, etc etc. I'd rather they didn't. DDG, just like Apple, is leveraging a rather understandable revulsion toward anti-privacy practices. I say more power to them!
The same applies to DuckDuckGo then. It's free. They do still profit off you, but clearly they took a more privacy-focused approach in hopes that it pays off.

Google scrapes your gmail server side so it doesn’t matter the app you use to access it. If you value your privacy in the slightest ditch gmail.

I went one better - I took out a gmail address and turned it into a spam magnet. I figure they now have a server dedicated solely to my inbox. :)

Qwant is interesting, but it is very slow (at least here). And the news search doesn’t seem to crawl very often - it seems to be about a half day behind.

Shows some promise, though.

DDG is my search engine of choice! If you run a google and DDG search on a "controversial" topic, you will be amazed at the difference in results.
I don't make anything of this, but it's funny at least. Screenshots from today:

So here is what we need:
Search: DuckDuckGo
Browser: Firefox/Safari
Maps: Apple Maps, Here (Not sure of their data collection policy, but good UI and POI info)
Social Media: You really don't need this
Mail: Apple Mail (Other highly secure services are paid)
Firefox with AdNauseam is my current setup. The biggest "**** you" I can possibly give to advertisers.
(But I use vanilla Safari on MR :))

There‘s a contradiction there. It says the data collected is personally identifiable. If they ”replace segments” of them, then they are not. So which is it?

Maybe instead of questioning my motives you should confront the fact that google, itself, says it DOES collect a large amount of information that it says, itself, identifies you.

Moreover, I can read. The link you presented says they MAY do x, and they MAY do y, but doesn’t say what they DO. It also doesn’t identify which pieces of data are affected by these techniques. In short, that link, read carefully, doesn’t say ANYTHING about what happens to your data.
It's confusing. I'm guessing Google anonymizes it as early as possible in their pipeline. It's a big liability for them to keep linked info sitting around. I know a lot of Google engineers personally, and they aren't hacks like at FB, which both companies' track records in privacy breaches also show*. I'm not too worried using Google but appreciate DDG's approach; there's no reason Google needs that data.

* Except for Google Plus. An ex-Google Morgan Knutson spilled the beans on what an internal disaster that was. Basically one VP was the root of all evil there. He's gone.

I would love to switch to DDG, but my apartment complex uses Google Fiber so I don't think it would do a whole lot...
