These strike me as two entirely separate things that people mix up a lot...

1 - Do I want future users of this device to know what I did online? Use Private Browsing to block.
2 - Do I want Google to know what I did online? Use Duck Duck Go to block.

DDG will fix #2. It will not fix #1.

Private Browsing will fix #1. It will not fix #2.

Using both together will satisfy both, but they're often totally independent/unrelated issues.

That article is 100% complaining about how Duck Duck Go doesn't take care of #1, but I don't care about #1 most of the time - it's only #2 that I want to have handled 99% of the time.

Google is a giant and like so many, needs breaking up. Search results are literally life and death to companies, the drop off of traffic if you aren't listed "above the fold" on the first page and exponentially more, so should you be banished to page 2 and beyond within the results.

That said, at least they provide me with a wealth of software solutions that have saved me a lot of time and money over the years. I have never been under the illusion however that it has been "for free".

Ultimately they still rate way above Facebook in my eyes though. I want to see that sorry sack disbanded first.

Seriously, multi-user devices are so 199X. Or present-day if you share one with family I guess.

Why not use Apple Mail as well as iCloud Mail for personal use?
I’ve thought of that, but I prefer platform agnostic solutions. Apple Mail works well on Apple devices, but I still use windows full time on computers (especially since my MacBook died), and I’ve never been able to set iCloud as exchange for push mail. It’s the same reason I prefer Spotify over Apple Music. :)

Wow that's scary how much they collect
It is scary how most did not care even knew or guessed and how many do not care still.
Google could become so valuable company without have such valuable information.
One important think, from my experience. None of search engines gives results comparable to Google. No to protect Google. We should get used to it as without personal information search can not be that precise.

Good for them. I made the switch awhile ago and havent looked back. Yes, google does have some nice features when searching for business hours. But I’m sure DDG will eventually add this.
You can find business hours in Apple Maps if you search for the business.

And so what, we're being exposed to Google malicious spying anyway, even with the Privacy labels, because they don't disable access to our data, which is the whole point.

Moved away from Google years ago. I started with ddg, which I like, but it’s very US centric, which is very irritating when you don’t live in the US. Search for something in Paris and it brings up places in Paris Texas before the actual Paris. You know, the big famous city in France. Ridiculous.
To get more Google type results, I moved to start page. Very good and private.
just started my own self hosted searx instance though, and couldn’t be happier. Surprisingly easy to do, and man I feel a whole lot better about what anyone can glean from my searches now.
it’s a real shame you can’t choose your own search engine on Safari, rather than their own list. I have ddg set, but my searx instance, whoogle, and start page all in favourites. It’s an extra tap but works ok for the piece of mind.

When DuckDuckGo meets Google at the traffic lights

I use duckduck as default search engine and use the duckduck app more than Safari.

Only Google service I still use is YouTube. Can someone please properly compete with them? Seems like a simple thing for content creators to post content on several services. But without any real alternative it’s kinda hard to not avoid using it.

If Apple wanted to be really pure, they'd use Duck Duck Go as their default search engine and stop accepting money from Evil Google, correct?
Or people to not use Chome on the desktop to not have canceled Windows Safari. They care as long as you are paying for it.

It's blind to think otherwise that Apple is some moral hero.

Might seem 'scary' on the face of it but Google annoymizes all data. https://policies.google.com/technologies/anonymization?hl=en-US

Personally after the Snowden revelations, I think DDG position quite pointless. Google uses the data to sell ads, and the Goverment already has all your data.

So I might aswell use the best service around, because what exact benefit does DDG give for its 'privacy' claims if Google does not keep personally identifiable information anyways? (and note that it would not make sense for Google to lie and risk lawsuits, when they only care about selling ads anyways)

It's been proved time and time again that almost all "anonymized" data from the major tech companies can trivially be linked back to your identity, in fact it's designed this way so they can claim the data is anonymized yet still have the benefits of identifiable data.

Also, if I had a dollar for every time someone says "Why would X company risk Y thing if they have the potential to be sued?" I would be Jeff Bezos.

I tried Duck Duck Go 4 or 5 times for a couple weeks each before it finally stuck. Either it’s gotten better at search results or Apple’s Siri search got better at finding what I’m looking for before needing to use a search engine. All I know is that I don’t miss Google and don’t feel the need to use it. I’ve been using DDG for about a year now as my default search.

Siri has in fact gotten much better at giving me direct answers to questions without searching for webpages that might have my answer. I think this is the future Apple is striving towards without having to start its own search engine.

My only gripe with DDG was its UI which felt amateurish. They seem to have polished it up as I don’t get that impression anymore. But that duck logo could certainly use a revamp.
