Is using DDG better or different than using Google and Google maps with out being signed in? Isn't that really how Google harvests your soul is using it while signed in? Actually curious about opinions on this.

Kind of a long read, but this DDG page explains a lot of what you are asking about.

The short version is by using cookies, Google can track a lot of what you do even without you being signed in. DDG says they do not do that.

I switched to DuckDuckGo about three years ago. At first I used the "!g" (send search request to Google) a fair bit, but - at least for me - nowadays DDG gives me just as good results as Google.

I'm not 100% sure if that means DDG is getting better, or Google is getting worse though. :p

One of my favorite DDG tricks is what Google used to offer as "I'm feeling lucky" - you type in your query and just add an exclamation point afterward. DDG will take you directly to the first result.

How does DDG make its money?
https://www.reddit.com/r/duckduckgo/wiki/index

This info from their Reddit wiki explains.

Q: How does DuckDuckGo Make Money?

A: DuckDuckGo generates revenue in two ways, while upholding our privacy policy:

1. Advertising
2. Affiliate revenue

It is a myth that search engines need to track you to make money on Web search. When you type in a search, we can show an ad just based on that search term. For example, if you type in, "car" we show a car ad. That doesn't involve tracking because it is based on the keyword and not the person.

Advertising on DuckDuckGo takes the form of sponsored links that appear above search results. Sponsored links are currently syndicated through Yahoo!.

DuckDuckGo is part of the affiliate programs of the eCommerce websites Amazon and eBay. When you visit those sites through DuckDuckGo, including when using !bangs, and subsequently make a purchase, we receive a small commission.

This mechanism operates anonymously and there is no personally identifiable information exchanged between us and Amazon or eBay. These links are regular organic links (like any other link in our results) and these programs do not influence our ranking or relevancy functions in any way. That is, they are not advertising like paid placements or paid inclusions, and we only generate revenue from them if you ultimately find them relevant enough to end up purchasing an item. For more details, check out our privacy policy.

Even if I switch search engines, I'd be so hard-pressed to leave Gmail. Once you have an address for 10+ years, it's really rough to swich...

I ask in all seriousness: is it worth the effort to use another search engine if Google has tens of thousands of my emails?

Thank you @Weaselboy and @BigMcGuire
I had been using Bing. The results looked more orderly and were just better than what I was getting from Google. Google used to be so good. What happened to them?

I guess it’s time to give the Mighty Ducks a try. Or that Startpage.

I hope DDG eventually finds(or makes) an alternative service for YouTube.

The problem is cost. Video servers suck up a ridiculous amount of data which has to be paid for somehow. DDG does not monetize things the way Google does so they may not have the money.

This is purely an NYC thing, but I love that Apple Maps lets you rotate the map a few degrees counterclockwise so that Manhattan's streets line up right.

Hopefully more people will start using DDG as its results aren’t as good as Google’s - but then again more people use Google.

FAN-*****-TASTIC! So glad I left that garbage called Google and went with DDG!

Glad my preferred search engine is continuing to improve. Keep it going DDG.

I've used DDG for years now! I also refuse to say Google-it... Does Google pay us to say it.. NO!

I'm stoked Apple Maps is linked to DDG now and that means Apple must be making progress with their mapping project and shows they are moving into a services model instead of all hardware.

Interesting. I was thinking the other day about apps and websites integrating Apple Maps more. I think it had been someone talking about the revamp of the maps that got me thinking. I only hope this helps out both companies more.

I hope Apple acquires DuckDuckGo down the line while they still have respect for privacy and while they're still cheap. Have it be rebranded to Apple Search (with search.apple.com being the main domain). Siri can improve a lot by using the app's cache, which remains on-device, just the way Apple likes to do it.
