'Dune Case' for PCs Copies Mac Pro's Cylindrical Design

I've done two G5 conversions now, first mATX and 2nd full ATX, using kits from David Chugg @ thelaserhive

Nice. Maybe I will do this when I upgrade to Skylake. The laserhive's parts make it less intimidating, but having never use a dremel before the prospect of me taking one to a beautiful G5 case makes me queasy. :)

you can make cylinder PC case that asthetically does not rip off the Mac Pro to the extend the Dune does.

Though you did ask how much different can a trash can look. Here is a quick google jobbie, cylinder PC, original design. I'd argue this is very different to the Mac Pro ripoff that dune has put together.

The real innovation in the Mac Pro is $$$$$$ apple has the funds to create customs Components that fit into it, for instance good luck getting 2xfull GPUs in a PC version.

Soooo....given the PC components you can buy these days, a cylinder case is kinda a waste of time due to the design/space restrictions. If your want a mini factor , get a cube. Cannot see any company making components that will fit cylinder cases anytime soon. A shuttle PC cube can take 2xgpu.

Hi there MH01 .. This looks great too and its good to see that others are doing custom builds for the PC case. When doing this case the quality of build was a key element for the Dune Case. I didn't want to cut corners when build a case and those who have an understanding of manufacturing would not argue the cost of the case is more than reasonable.

Processes like this:
aluminum.png

If you look at the picture, the first is a two piece aluminum block that is welded together and the other a single piece of aluminum. The cheaper option is the two piece and weld but there are problems associated when doing this process and failure rate would be higher. If you weld two pieces together there are risk of air being in between the two pieces when welded. Also when polished there may be uneven surfaces and when you anodize the case you may see different shades of color because the surface is uneven. If you look at a one piece of aluminum an apply CNC or form it you will not have that problem because it was from one block. When polish and anodize the chance of having lines or unevenness is unlikely to happen.

So while some may think its expensive you need to ask you self why is this case in that price range? Its those little details that count in product design and I believe that I did not cut any corners in building this case. My vision was to build a quality product with no cutting corners, not to build a product and find cheaper ways to manufacture it by changing its look and increase profit margin.

I hope this gives you an understanding that the Dune case when funded is for those that want a quality build case made from high grade aluminum and a new take on the PC...

In today's Mac world of soldered ram, soldered ssd cable, soldered cpu, glued stuff etc, I miss this thing's easy access, so convenient... Someone should copy this ;)

It's kinda sorta been done before but none of those cases ever really caught on.

I'll also add that I never really felt the G4 cases were too practical anyway. Turned out disk drives were what I was always messing with, and those were almost always the hardest thing to get to, while PCI cards I did not.. and even if I did, it was pretty easy to take a PCI card out of a regular case (like the g5 or mac pro) pretty easily. The key with PCI cards is to have some way of securing the cards that doesn't involve a screw falling to the bottom of the case lol.

Agreed and I miss the old Mac Pro, and I loved the cheese grater version as well.

I really wanted so badly to make this a ATX build will full size graphics cards. And I actually started like that for the first 6 months doing this.
Basic design flaw with this case is, that it exist because you want to use full size GPU, but you can't use all the ports in GPU. But this can be still fixed?

I believe some sacrifices had to be made, I can see why a full sized GPU won't work.

I'm seriously being tempted by this, but I'm so content with my iMac. I don't see any reason for another desktop. Plus I think my wife would kill me.

I don't see any reason to sacrify the size of front panel. The designer should just make the frot panel big enough to have more sockets that he had in mind. There's nothing wrong to have sockets or places for them unused (contrary what many fanboys here think..)..

Hi there toke lahti .. I'm in the process of talking to a manufacture about the USB-C option as many have expressed that it would be a good option. I am waiting to get some confirm answers from them. If so the USB-C option will give ease to those that are looking for that option. But that will also be subject to that the buyer has a motherboard with USB-C support.

Is the back finalised as 2 hdmi

Hahahah I feel you there with the the wife.... The new iMac is really good and the 5K display is really in a league of its own. How they got the 5k to work is amazing considering the Dell 5k needs 2 DP 1.2 cables to run it externally. The iMac GPU has its limitations on the flip side for power users. The Dune case can configure any GPU that is in Mini ITX standard. Probably the most powerful one to date is the 970 GTX mini ITX which is very powerful for gaming and more powerful than most mobile chips sets.

The back will be either DP 1.2 or HDMI 2.0 ..

If you move to display port as I could understand the pref for that but hdmi would be great as this is going next to my tv

At the moment there is 2 x (HDMI 2.0) or 2 x (DP 1.2) ... and potentially USB-C with a HUB that has 2 x (HDMI 2.0) or 2 x (DP 1.2) just to be clearer :)

Hey mate.

I wish you all the success , and no doubt the Build process and quality equals or exceeds the price point . Though I never questioned these.

My only issue, which you have not addressed in this thread and is the elephant in the room is the Design, aesthetic design. Did you not copy the Mac Pro?

Like I said I go off first impressions , and I thought I was looking at a picture of a gold Mac Pro.

Hi MH01 thanks for your comment. There are some distinct differences with the Dune case than other cases on the market. The case has been designed from the ground up. The mesh on top of the case, the front panel with a Custom PCB and the whole internals inside the case is very unique.

This is an advantgard approach to the PC case and I hope this can be a start of a new wave of the way we manufacture PC cases.

On the right picture the trash seems to have flown out via the hole on the bottom. I'd suggest you patch that up before production.

Sorry Kajje .. I dont quite understand your question. Do you have concerns about production?

If there is concern about production please be sure that we have partnered with a reliable and reputable manufacture. We are doing crowd funding so that part of the funds can go towards tooling and molds for the Dune case.

Nice attempt at getting him to say something that could later be used in court. ;)

It's funny even looking at this thing despite being a blatant rip off you can tell it is cheap. Would love a side by side to see how much bigger this is than the genuine article.

No you can't, you're just biased against anything without an Apple logo on it.

Thanks for the positive comments guys. One thing I love about the community like macrumor is that its a place where you hear peoples opinions about various topics. There have been some really intelligent people commenting in these forums and I value the comments that have been made regardless if they like the Dune Case or not. The Dune Case is not for everyone and my purpose here in this thread is to help the readers understand that the Dune Case is simply a PC Case not a desktop computer. I had a vision to do something different for the PC and one year later we have the Dune Case. I made a lot of sacrifices away from family to bring something to the community that I think they would like which is not the conventional case made out of sheet metal but rather a case built with quality materials. We are a small startup and I hope we can get as much support for the Dune Case to enable us to continue to make a difference in design and build quality for the PC Case. Thanks everyone here for your contribution so far.

Please consider making a case similar to the old G4 cube.

It would be my go-to for any custom PC builds (mine or for others).
