iPhone Duo Duo is beautiful

There are videos out showing the folding function and screen detail from the “hands on” session after the presentation. CNBC reporter mentioned that she could not see a crease, but as we all know, it all depends upon the durability of the screen, long term.

Add on top of that I was planning to upgrade my M1 iPad Pro in the next year, and this does that as well for less, albeit with a smaller screen than the 11" I was targeting, and less powerful hardware. But then again, I'll always have it in my pocket which is a huge advantage over the iPad, and I don't have to manage multiple devices. It just works. And with the iPad, you don't really need the M-series chip. It's not like a Mac, it's pretty limited still. I'm also fine with upgrading every two years instead of every year. The pace of hardware development has slowed, outside of this leap to iPhone Duo, and I had already been considering switching to a two year upgrade cycle.


I actually prefer the closed form factor, because I hate how tall and unpocketable iPhone has become, so this should be easier to reach up to the top to swipe down now. I also think it will be better for texting since the keyboard should be a bit wider. And then you open it up and it's a friggin iPad mini, with an under-display camera.

I'm so surprised they were able to achieve the under display camera, but it makes sense why the outer camera isn't hidden: The inner camera is mainly for video, so it doesn't have to be as high-quality as the outer camera. They're probably using a lot of AI processing to clean it up. Actually, in their marketing materials, they don't even list a MP count for the inner camera, and just say it's a FaceTime camera, so it's probably not even meant for stills. Interesting.

It’s the width that I don’t like. I don’t have long fingers and I would need to use it two handed almost all the time.

But I agree about upgrading less often. I got the Air last year and had already decided I wouldn’t be upgrading this year. The Air has been the most perfect iPhone for me.
 
The crease, understandable..... that matt screen though? damn

I think the Duo is a great looking phone, they did really well with it but I just wish it had the telephoto lens for the camera and faceID without those features I don’t think I can make the jump from the pro line to this (especially with the pro line having more customizable features for the camera now). I know those features won’t matter to everyone and I think those that do get the Duo will love it, I just think going from the pro phones to the Duo would be disappointing for me (even though the the form factor and the inside screen is great).

I get migraines from OLED. If not for that, I'd probably consider the iPhone Duo to replace my iPhone Air + iPad mini combo. The pricing is actually cheaper than the $2500 or so I was expecting.

$999 - iPhone Air 256GB
$949 - iPad mini 512GB cellular
$1948 Total

$2199 for the iPhone Duo 512GB seems pretty reasonable to me especially considering I can ditch the iPad mini's cellular plan of $20+tax per month.

Think of the traditional computer mouse. The ergonomics are designed for right hand use. The quick action buttons are on the bottom and along the right side of the screen. I'm sure I can reach them, but not as comfortably or as intended. I'll have to try in person. Unlike current phones (symmetrical), this is angled and shaped to fit in your right hand when closed.
 
It's a beautiful design. I'm impressed with how they made it fit such a unique form factor. Coming from a Pro Max, the lack of a telephoto lens will be tough. I'm going to get it though. I was considering getting an iPad mini, but now I'll just go for this so I can carry 1 device.
 
So cool. I was totally not interested but now may order one lol. I tried the google fold phone and it was really cool. Apple just has their claws in. Everything just works
 
I'm sure the blacks are muted a little, but that antiglare is aggressive. The previous Samsung folds had zero anti-glare, and I had to return one because of that. This Apple one looks just right. It's always a trade-off, but I can't deal with reflections. Some people say LED hurts thier eyes, but with me it's reflections. It's looking through a double image with the one underneath slightly blurry.

This is going to be a serious issue with most apps. Everything is built on portrait, not half of landscape. The front screen looks more like a gimmick than anything someone will actually enjoy using. The thing almost needs to be unfolded to be of any real use and then you are going right back to an iPad mini.

it definitely looks like a really dark blue in the gallery. Almost reminds me of the iPhone 15 Pro color, maybe a bit darker.
 
Here's the things for me. It's nearly 260 grams, so it's the heaviest phone they sell. Also, they keep showing this wallpaper transition, but what if you have a portrait photo on the outside....what's it do when you open it? Some photos can't be both. It's also a 1080p front camera.
Like the iPhone Air, the Duo 2 will solve many "didn't think about".
