I just noticed three specks under my screen this morning. I thought it was dead pixels at first but they are still there when the screen is off. Any one in Canada have to exchange one yet? I think that we have to go through Rogers/Fido and not Apple.

basically you risk getting a phone that is just as bad if not worse, ALMOST ALL iphone 3gs' have some form of dust under their screen, the key thing is to not be anal about it

my first iphone 3g had dust on it, my friend cracked it, and i had to buy a new one. The next one had dust and was working fine. I though I would replace it because it also had dead pixels

THe new one has just as much dust as the last one, with maybe a little more light leakage ( no dead pixels though)

so in conclusion for replacements =

-dead pixels = probably a reason to replace if it really bugs you
- dust under screen = ALL phones that i have seen have dust, its not worth it
- light leakage= not worth it, all phones have some slight light leakage

Wow, that story makes me hopeful!! Can I ask what your "arguement" for a replacement was? I am concerned that I just will come across as an obsessive, and not have a strong case for why I want an exchange. Also, how big were ur particles of dust, they are quite small on mine (maybe the size of a pixel), but annoying none the less. Thanks for ur help so far!

Actually u don't need an 'argument' at all. This is a manufacturing defect. I had the same issue and the Genius told me the same and exchanged it no trouble. The replacement had dust also; he didn't even give me that one and went and got another one which was fine.

My question is, how common is this? Is this just something you've got to live with if you get a 3g or do most people not have this dust?

Also, is there a limit to the number of replacements? I would think that if it was a manufacturing defect that warranted a replacement the first time, it would hold up as a valid argument each time you encountered that defect.

*crossing fingers that the 3rd time is a charm*[/QUOTE]

It seems to be very common. And I'm not sure if there is a limit, b/c this is a manufacturing defect and they will have to replace it until u get a good one.

Actually I think that whether it is worth it or not to replace the phone is up to the owner. It really depends how much something like that bothers you. It is a manufacturing defect and qualifies for a replacement.

As the days pass, the fact there is dust under my screen is really annoying me. I am wondering if anybody (preferably from the UK) has managed to successfully exchange theirs? I don't mind traveling to my nearest apple shop (2h train journey), but only if its worth it.

Thanks.

I was able to exchange mine with no issues for dust under the screen. For me there was one fixed piece and one piece that showed up every so often when moving the phone around. Genius Bar exchanged it straight way. The new one they gave was was perfect build quality, no dust, dead pixels, case issues or light leak.

the thing is almost all phones have light leakage and dust so there is little benefit in trying to replace one that has these problems hoping to get a perfect phone

when i replaced my phone i had a corrupt backup ( it happens often)

to me all the trouble, driving and lost contacts just wasnt worth it

Sorry for dragging up this old topic, I thought it better replying on this one than create a new one ;-)

I've been an iPhone 3G owner from day one and have loved it so far. I had to exchange it a few times, due to various dead pixel problems and screen rotation problems.

Anyway, I was out in the sun today and noticed I have some dust under the screen and a cat hair! Since I have a cat I am assuming this has happened since I have owned it(Can't imagine any cats in the Chinese manufacting plants ;-))

I am assuming this is down the light leaks that I have, since it's on the left hand side, but who knows.

So I was wondering, is there any chance of a replacement? Since this is more than likely down to the light leak issue/poor manufacturing/build quality. I'm expecting the answer is no since, I've had the phone a few months. It just worries me, that I have a bit of dust and a cat hair there now after two months, what will be like after a year??! I have to sign an awfully long 18th month contract to get this phone and I shudder to think how it'll look by then!

Cheers for any advice!

I am currently on iPhone #6, and have dust under the screen still. I have yet to have any issues returning for dust, although have had to argue for a replacement for a light leak. I had my original iPhone on 11th July, so i have returned mine past the 28 days and still received replacements.

To me, the dust is as annoying as dead pixels - and if they are an ok reason to exchange, i shouldn't see why dust isn't.

That reminds me, i think i may take this one back and get number 7.

You're damn right you should! You spent a lot of money on that phone and it's only reasonable to expect a unit that doesn't have dirt under the glass where you can never get to it.

I'd take it back for number seven in a heartbeat! ;)

I've had a few iPhone 3G's due to replacements for various problems. Though light leaks were my most prevakent issue, I did have one that had dust under the screen. The Genius took one look at it and swapped it out.

My problem is that the cat hair got there after I'd bought it, though the dust problem you guys are having is a manufacturing thing?

I think I got my last iPhone replacement on the 27th of July(I think I went through 5 or so replacements for various issues), so my current phone is a day other 2 months old. Do I have any chance of a replacment?

Even tho it's happened afterwards, it's due to manufacturing defects that were there from the start. Also, just explain to them just like u have on here -if it's like that now, what's it gona be like in 18 months? Not just the fact dust is there, it's that fact that manufacturing defects have caused it to get there.

Hell yeah. Apple have a goal of high customer satisfaction, and most of there stores strive to achieve it. Plus u have two chances as u have the Arndale centre 2. They were really helpful for one of my returns, I'd recommend them. Not saying trafford are bad, just haven't experienced them.

All the best!

I had 1 really noticeable stuck pixel (green) that I found today. I looked on the right side and could BARELY see another 2 or 3 stuck pixels. Honestly, my girlfriend stared at the screen for a few minutes and couldn't see those so maybe it was in my head... but the 1 was really noticeable.

I took the phone into the apple store today, and they swapped it out without trouble. As long as you can show them the pixels, they'll make you happy.

Just received my 3rd iPhone 3G and it has dust under the screen, what looks like a long scratch or scuff under the screen and nicks in the metal bezel.

2nd iPhone had dust and uneven case, 1st one had a crack in the back casing.

Fed up, to say the least.

it looks like i have a hair underneath my iPhone 3G's screen i dont think it was there since purchase. but i will still be taking it back to see if i can get a replacement. i never had any problems like this with the original iPhone. i wonder if screen protectors would help with the dust issue? maybe not because they dont cover the cracks unless you have a touch through naked case or something.

2 things will fix your dust / hair issue....

1.) Buy a power support screen protector (preferrably anti-glare)
2.) Buy a Incase SLIDER HARD CASE

Here's why.... if you're like me then you have an issue with dust and stuff getting on your screen and under your screen / case. It will drive you nuts and you'll want to return your phone for it.

Well, the power support screen protectors fit SO PERFECTLY to the screen that you really don't have to worry about dust getting under them, or around the screen. Then, the incase slider case fits ridiculously tight. I mean, TIGHT. But it won't scratch your phone because it has padding to prevent this. The case, combined with the screen protector, both offer the ultimate level of dust and crap protection for the iphone 3g. Also, having the anti-glare screen protector helps with this because for some reason it doesn't attract as much dust as the crystal ones.

im heading out this morning to get my 3rd phone, my first phone was perfect but the ringer switch snapped off and now this replacement has a crooked screen, where it dips below the bezel creating a rough edge, and also the sleep wake button rattles, these arent serious issues but they annoy me and after being an inspector in a machine shop, i find this to just be poorly built

Like a wise man told me "what do you expect out of 12 year old asians"

Got number 7. Still has dust. I really hate iPhones.

well i know 2 guys that have always put their iPhones in the pocket. one has a I.S. only on the screen and an Incase rubber. He thought the dust was under the I.S. so after removing the I.S. he noticed a lot of dust under the glass. He was unable to exchange it.

Another guy just goes naked and noticed a bit of dust under the glass and he also was not able to exchange it for that reason. ATT store offered a refurb instead  but he declined and wants to write a complaint letter to ATT corporate/Apple Corporate.

I say if its inevitiable then its gonna be what its gonna be. As long as its not out of control with dust under the glass. what can you do???? I understand right out of the box and seeing dust but after use well...

Somone that owned this case told me that it cracked within a few weeks of use. told me to avoid it like the plauge. also said the 'dockable' version he had the bottom part got loose and was worried it would just slide off unknown to him.

He's dead wrong. I've had mine a while, and know other people with the case that have had it for a long time now... no issues. He would be the ONLY person i've heard of with a cracked incase slider, ever.

That said, i'd have to say he probably did something to mess it up....
