over and over again

Make sure that VLC is installed, and that the versions of VLC and Handbrake are the same (x32 or x64). That should clear up your issue.

handbrake now has a iPad preset
and i've never had any issues with subtitles using handbrake, are they not syncing or is the entire audio track off?

where do you all find the "ipad settings" on handbrake? I have looked all over this program and have yet to find settings that specify what device you will be playing it on....

audio is terrible on handbrake

Just start with the Apple TV preset and expand the horizontal resolution to 1024 if working with HD media.

Handbrake is great for this.

+1

I had never used Handbrake before. I had been using Toast Titanium 11 for converting my already decrypted DVDs to the iPad but I haven't been happy with the results. So I tried Handbrake last night on the same movie (The Town) and what a difference.

I selected the iPad preset on Handbrake and the movie was done in under an hour and was about 922MB. In contrast, the one made (also using the iPad preset - HQ) using Toast came to 2GB and took 2 hours to complete.

But here's the kicker, the movie converted with HB looked great, the one from Toast had really bad stair-stepping especially around faces and high-contrast objects.

So for me, HB is the clear winner here, and it's free.

Last I checked there were lots of sketchy sites pushing handbrake too. So the link request is a legit one.

Regarding an earlier post, my iPad 2 plays back ATV/ATV formatted files without an issue. My problems are:

VLC+Handbrake on the i7 iMac produces a video file with what appears to be a bad framerate/skipped frames. Handbrake on the PC works just fine.

My preferred method is to use Slysoft's AnyDVD and CloneDVDmobile (PC only). Really slick, and no problems with these. These aren't free (or cheap) and are subscription based for updates. But around major holidays they sometimes revert to lifetime licenses.

Handbrake gets heavy use when ripping Anime titles. For some reason the subs get messed up in CloneDVDmobile (and to a much lesser extent in Handbrake as well) and either never show up or appear for a frame or two then disappear.

i've downloaded handbreak and the vlc player and have yet to be able to copy one single dvd...i was getting the same error messages as the previous poster and i reinstalled vlc from the link and the same thing, i kept getting that the dvd is protected or bad quality...i even watched a video on youtube of a guy using handbreak, i put the same dvd he used in my machine and got the same error message....if someone can please help me figure out what the heck im doing wrong, i'll be sooo happy as i feel like i could bust my machine up lol

stick to handbrake, it very good at it. use the apple tv 2 preset, it has great audio/video quality, for the ipad, tv, mac, iphone. i use that preset all the time aand works great so far..

Try a different DVD... there's a good chance that the one you are working with is scratched or otherwise compromised. Would probably still play in a DVD player, but Handbrake can't deal with it. I had a few like that.

Agreed - the only pre-set I use is the ATV2, and it plays fine on my iPad, iPhone and ATV2.

How do I convert a DVD to an MP4 for my ipad. I have mac the ripper and handbrake. None of them seem to work. Handbrake can no detect the volume,
mac the ripper does not detect the volume

Yesterday, I ripped the Avatar DVD using Handbrake and selecting the Apple Tv option for my iPad. It works perfectly on the iPad and looks good. I was just wondering if you can recommend any additional options that will make the DVD quality or sound quality any better?

well you can increase the bitrate on the video/audio a bit. but the atv2 preset is just fine dont you think.

if i recall correctly audio is preseted to 160 kbps aac. when i convert a movie that i like a lot, and want to enjoy a good sound quality with my studio headphones i just turn it to 256 aac.

maybe that helps you mate:D

Why are people using the atv2 settings instead of iPad settings in handbrake?

Should the iPad settings not be better suited?

I rip the DVD/Blu-ray to a mkv package with makemkv, then I use handbrake to encode it :) Makemkv take about 30 min to rip the track and then handbrake depends on the quality settings.

Works great! Plus if you have a HTPC you can take all your movies and put them on there full quality to be watched.

I'm guessing that no one is concerned that ripping DVDs (even for archival purposes) is illegal as it violates the DMCA......

Don't get me wrong, I love Handbrake, but it does tend to produce large files. I'm currently trying to convert favourite dvds into a standard format that will play on our 3GS, ipad2, Macbook Air, and PS3. I did an episode of the X-Files last night, using the Apple universal (so everything but the PS3) setting on Handbrake (2-pass) and it's great but nearly 900MB.

I know that the (ahem) dodgy) downloads of tv episodes can be around a third of that in xvid format, with pretty good quality, so I'd appreciate any tips and alternatives?

DMCA????whati is the benelux?, I think you are legally entitled to create a backup copy of your DVD for personal viewing.

Instead of "thinking", try actually reading the statute and the comments :)

17 USC 117(a) permits backup copies FOR COMPUTER PROGRAMS ONLY. http://www.copyright.gov/reports/studies/dmca/dmca_executive.html.

Unless you are able to argue that a movie on a DVD is "a set of statements or instructions to be used directly in a computer in order to bring about a certain result", you have little chance of being permitted to make your DVD backup.

I assume the "benelux" comment from the OP (for those not in the know, benelux is a common abreviation for Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg), they may not be based in the US, in which case the DMCA is of zero relevance to them.

same processor i have and it takes about a 2hrs to convert a DVD for the ipad, and this is a dedicated computer...takes less than an hour on my quad core though...:D
Do you mean Handbrake? I've been using Handbrake for this. Usually works great with no problems. Takes a long time on my ac Mini 1.5 core solo though (avg 4 hours per 1.5 hour movie). :(
