It’s nice to see them finally integrate the space for something useful. Might be slightly more noticeable on landscape videos, but still a good solution. Seems like they’ve been playing with this for the last 1-2 years since they added the pill shaped notifications.

Only if Apple also made the notch area touch sensitive. To my knowledge it's not now so the touch to expand feature won't work.

I think this is why it’s an “i” shape instead of a full pill? To make the center touch sensitive, thus, with the size of your finger taken into consideration, the center of the pill is also touch sensitive in way.

OK, sexy and all but my thumb is still the length it was before the phones got amazingly large and can't comfortably reach top of the screen without an elaborate yoga pose

This looks awesome! But I don't think this will be a very continent to use. I doesn't look like it will be easy to reach when operating a phone one handed....

BTW, I don't understand why people hate the name. I think it is a very nice choice. I like it a lot.

Shame of the massive price hike in Europe, due to the dollar/euro price.
Would have upgraded but they became approx. 200 euro/dollar more expensive.

Worth the change if you are a heavy photographer user to switch between iPhone 12 Pro to 14 Pro?

Also, any photographer here is using platforms like Contributor (by Getty) to sell their good iPhone photos?

So i guess if you use reachability you will get 2 pills? :p
I hope so! That would be an inelegant but necessary solution.

but wait, on second thought, no you wouldn't. During use of reachability, the area around the pill would be black anyway so you wouldn't notice it at all as the displayed information slide down.

I wouldn't mind a dynamic notch but I think apple would have to make the notch area touch sensitive to get similar interactions. Not impossible but it seems they decided to focus on the pill area. Interestingly, the area above the pill vacated by the notch must now be touch sensitive. I imagine applications won't make much use of though games might be able to?
I’m not sure what there is to do in that small sliver of a screen. I also wonder if this means they are pretty far from getting rid of the notch or pill altogether. Surely the island is a feature that will stick around for a while.

I was thinking that games (and technically all apps) now have a full screen touch surface minus parts of the pill so technically if you're gaming touches on the pill and above it register when they didn't before. Not sure how actually interesting that is, but ... active full screen border! Finally!

I agree, the island is probably going to stick around a while. The next step would be for the cameras to be truly under the display and the whole pill area becomes usable touch and rendering space. Then we're finally talking full screen iPhone. I think it could be a few years before that's possible.

I initially thought the same thing, but then imagine what you would end up with, if the notch expanded out sideways and/or down - you’d have a big black-screened forehead. The reason they pulled down the camera and sensors, so there is a small strip between the cutout and the edge of the screen, was just to allow for a small separation between the screen background and the expanded dynamic island, as a cleaner graphic design element.
Sure, slightly nicer in some ways aesthetically, but equally without that gap it would have to come less further out into your other content. So they could still have the expandable notch on the non-pro and any other notched older ones with iOS 16. So I don't see making the notifications banner be black and semi-hiding the notch should be a pro-only, or even this year only feature.

Although I say all this with the caveat that the older notches may be wider, and it may not really work very well in practice as I haven't seen them side by side.

But either way I don't see camouflaging a camera cutout within a black notifications area as technologically revolutionary. Better cameras and satellite coms etc are why I'd get (or will likely get) the Pro. They shrunk the notch - ok, nice. They improved some notifications at the top of the screen - cool. But the fact they simply tried to camouflage the smaller camera cutout in the middle of the screen they replaced the notch with seems hardly groundbreaking. But some people are talking like the "dynamic island" is some amazing new-fangled tech. 🤷‍♂️
