Why did an “Amazon” spokesperson have anything to say about this? (psst, I think that’s an error in the article)

No, because Amazon is - in the Luxembourg case - the affected company.

For me this case more interesting because it also has political component. The current leader EU Commission is Junker who was at time of deal president of Luxembourg.

the onus is on ireland to do things correctly.

ie collect the correct amount of tax.

Again, it is a tax deal exclusive to Apple. The question remains if Ireland gained an advantage towards other countries for the Apple EU HQ by using state aids. The question is, are these state aids (less taxes) or not.

Apple and Ireland are aligned on this issue. Apple has put several billion into escrow with Ireland to comply with the law as it is written under the dispute process. But EU is trying to extract $ from US taxpayers to pay for socialist and insolvent countries like France, Portugal, Greece, Italy and others.

Under current law any monies not paid to foreign tax authorities and repatriated to the US is taxed at the incremental rate to our rate. That's why Apple and everyone else parks money overseas. It's also why there is a huge push to reduce our rate to 20% and to have a lower repatriation rate around 10% or less.

how would US taxpayers be paying for it ?????

So so so so so glad to see this story, the best thing I’ve read in a while, I’m pretty sure EU tax payers are fed up with funding Ireland whilst it lets billions flow through its country for peanuts..

The rules are simple and have existed for years. Abide by them or face the consequences.

Wow at all the defence of tax avoidance by a company that’s more than rich enough; no wonder the west is flat out bankrupt if that’s the prevailing attitude...

You have absolutely no idea what the Brexit might mean for the UK. No access to Single Market. Under the hand, a lot of Europeans are not sad, that the British (with all their Extras) are leaving. The consequences are more severe for the UK (Access to the Single Market, Border NI/Ireland only to name two).

London will be unattractive as financial market, as all big bank need a European Banking license which you only get if your European HQ is within the EU...

Hahahahahaha you’ve been reading your own press too much, none of that is true...

I pay taxes, so should they. If they don't, they're taking some money that doesn't belong to them, which I call stealing. But they're rich, so their theft is ok, they'll find an agreement. Poor people not paying taxes are treaten like criminals, so should they.
So in your world view, our wealth belongs to the state, and they decide how much we can keep for our own mundane selfish reasons. We will never agree on this.

A company has to comply with the rules of a region where it operates. Ireland is in the EU. Tough luck.

I don't think luck is relevant. People demanding that Apple pay up are giving a EU member a free pass regarding Ireland's responsibility in the matter. Perhaps at day's end Apple will sue Ireland to recover damages - who knows? Lets not forget Ireland has gained a lot vis a vis employment / taxes from whatever these deals were.

And the EU as a whole has lost a lot more from them.

Huge international banks (working for one them) have already begun moving their European Business to the mainland (Frankfurt, Paris,Amsterdam).

If the negotiations between the EU and UK fail and there’s no deal, the UK will be treated exactly the same way like the US. And that will be a big problem for the UK as they import more than they export. Currently the UK still has access to the European Single Market.

But hey, it is not my problem. I should say thanks as I’m personally benefiting from it.

Oh dear oh dear, hmm I seem to recall several large banks staying in the U.K, and google even launched the Pixel 2 in London today, not America. And all that talk of financial utter doom and gloom, even world war 3, all claimed by the remain camp, all now having to back track on everything they declared as none of it came true...
We don’t need access like we do now to a market we have a massive deficit to, and the last time I checked America was the biggest economy? Oh how it would be bad to be treated like they do, those damn WTO rules....

Pure desperation on your part as a sour loser.. and I don’t have any time for bankers, greedy so and so’s that bankrupted the entire planet a few years ago due to their greed in London and New York... that will always be way way way worst then Brexit! Countless billions of hard earned TAX payers money handed over to greedy selfish people just to keep the planets economy going.

But you just keep on telling yourself the billions invested in the U.K. by EU companies will be thrown away..

Bombardier: who you're gonna call?

?????????????

The problem is that you see the state as your enemy. I see it as the part of my life I necessarily have to share with people around me, so I have to give a percentage of my money to get streets, healthcare, police and other services. I'm glad to do it but I want it to be fair. It's ridiculous that people with much more money than me pay a smaller percentage, no matter my vision of the state. And since it is the place I live in and not Apple, rules shouldn't be made up to fool me.

This is ridiculous. Ireland is appealing the decision, because it believes that the commission had no authority to overturn 20-30 years of member tax policy.

Now that same commission, who's authority is being challenged, is suing Ireland to collect taxes that may not even be legal.

Thanks Brussels.
